ZTE Fit Smart 4G Smartphone $49.50 (Half Price, Optus-Locked) @ Coles from 28th

370

Great cheap smartphone for those looking for a phone on a budget. Despite the modest price this phone flies and runs pretty much a vanilla build of kitkat. To put the performance into perspective this phone breaks 30k in Antutu, which puts it ~10,000 points ahead of the much loved Huawei Y550. The biggest downside to the ZTE Fit is it's missing 3g 850 mhz, which is an important band if you use Telstra, Boost or other Telstra resellers such as Aldi. So I would only recommend this phone for use on Optus network.

Honestly it's not worth paying $49.50, it is so crap.

    bad personal experience

    • +8

Bad experiences can help others if you say what the problem is. For all we know, you dropped the phone and it broke. Can you shed more light?

      • +1

Haha I dropped the phone and it broke, thinking of replacing it now with this deal

    • +1

I disagree, it is great value at $49.50.

The crap bits are the poor camera, the average screen and the lack of a compass.

Otherwise it is a great cheap phone that gets great reception on 4G and performs really well.

      • Maybe try hunting down for an Alcatel pop s3. had it as a spare phone and runs like a dream.

    • Poor Performance? Maybe the default ROM is Bloated crap.

I have one of these, mini review follows
    Bad points:
    - USB socket is on the left side of the phone, which is a bit weird.
    - Unlock button is on the right side of the phone - very annoying. Easy to press accidentally while handling the phone or putting it into your belt holster.
    - Lock screen doesn't support slide to unlock. Limited to pattern, PIN, password, voice unlock or long press. Long press is the most convenient, but when a notification comes in, if the phone is in your pocket, your leg will do the "long press" unintentionally, and then you start activating stuff at random as you walk.
    - If you have several screens, home screen is always the leftmost one, no way to re-assign it nor add screens to the left of home screen.
    - No magnetometer, so compass apps and VR apps won't be able to sense direction.

    Good points:
    - seems fast enough
    - good battery life (I charge twice weekly but have data, BT, GPS and WiFi normally off).
    - menu and back buttons can be swapped if desired.
    - Speaker is quite good (for a phone) for listening to music, and gets good volume.
    - Good size, not too large nor too small.
    - One of the few cheap phones with Bluetooth LE. This is a new standard, useful for things like the Tile https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tile_%28software%29
    - no bundled crapware on the phone (at least none that I can find).

I'd buy it again if I drop my current one.

    • Are there other ROMs available?

      • I haven't found any.

However, if you want slide-to-unlock, you don't need a ROM for that. The way I understand it, the phone's lock screen and display are controlled by the launcher app, and there are plenty of alternative launchers on Google Play.

OP, your post neglected to mention that the phone is locked to Optus.

Apparently Bagman can unlock these for $5.95:

And it still wont work on telstra/aldi 3g

      • +2

It will work on 2100mhz 3g on the Telstra network. Inadequate in regional areas, but ok in the major cities.

Mine has started having GPS issues. Randomly thinks I'm 1/2km from where I actually am. Annoying while driving. I have dropped it a few times though

    • Yeah my GPS isn't great.

For $49 your not going to get the greatest phone ever but I think its solid.

    • And if you add something worth $6 to your order, like a ream or two of A4 paper, you get free metro delivery: http://www.officeworks.com.au/information/policies/delivery-…

    • is the fit same as fit smart? same phone right? wondering why no one is making a big deal that it's cheaper at officeworks?

      • yes, same phone

      • For those who are into flybuys and fuel discounts, the Coles offering would be more appealing than Officeworks.

INCREDIBLE phone for the price, it has been as low as $45 but I'm still not complaining! Same specs (but worse phone) than the LG Leon. I'd say this is more a HTC Desire 320 equivelant.

If you need a cheap useable phone this is it, it's running the A53 Cortex, same as the Huawei Y550. So good on battery and fast.

    • CPU is MT6582 which is A7 Cortex.

      • Oh crap… your right! Sorry!

I've gotten it confused with the LG Leon :) Good pick up!

      • +2

No it has MT6752 (Cortex-A53). Confirmed by running CPU-Z on my Optus stock.

        • +1

Ah, just the spec sites I've seen show A7, but if you've run it, it's obviously running A53 then :)

The irony? The A53 CPU costs the hardware maker $5 for the entire chip!

        • Isn't the MT6752 an Octa-core 1.7Ghz? ZTE lists the specs as Quad-core 1.3Ghz. You sure the Fit isn't running the MT6732 instead which matches ZTE's spec sheet being Quad-core and 1.3Ghz?

        • @adr8:

He is just going by the information CPU-Z gives.

  • I got this phone for my girlfriend during the last sale and she loves it. Can't complain for this price. All it needs is a $5 case from ebay to protect it.

I got this phone for my girlfriend

I'm no sucker that pays $700 for a phone.

If she is happy, then she is a keeper… ;)

    • Proper cases for these don't seem to be cheap unfortunately :(

  • so this phone won't work for Telstra network even if unlocked with bagman code?

    • It'll work on telstra, the issue will be in areas that rely on the 850 band will mean you'll only pick up 2g.

I bought one to use while I fixed my nexus 4. While I prefer my nexus 4, this is a great phone for the coin. Easy to root, great wifi strength, battery life. Crappy photos (reminds me of my first 2 mp point and shoot camera).

Get one and save money, unless you're 20 and have low self esteem and need a 'better' phone to stay in with the cool kids. Then when you're 40 you'll realise the cool kids aren't….

    • It seems like having a retro Nokia 'brick' is becoming 'cool' again. At least with the hipster crowd. It's a strange phenomenon. Even just a few years back if I was packing one of those bricks I would have been ridiculed to no end(not that it would bother me because I do what suits me and hate following trends). ZTE is not a household brand but they are certainly getting up there with the other budget Chinese brands.

  • good points, crazy cheap , 4g, fast, bad points, gps bit iffy and gets hot when using has a gps in car and freezes. need to fix storage issue . though really cant complain about a smart phone that can do everything a galaxy can do for a 20/th of the price…

  • does someone have the link to how to free up space?

    • I'm quite sure it is on the ZTE website under downloads for the Fit.

It is somewhere in this thread also https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2387307&…

Which could be worth a read as some have encountered problems trying to install the new firmware. If you have a Windows 7 pc you should be right, as the people who had problems tried to install it from Win 8 & 10 machines.

    • Save the time and 50c, and go to officeworks. They are $49 there and have the storage "bug" fixed already. Well at least on the two that I bought did. Internal link here
