Optus ZTE Fit (4G) Prepaid Mobile $49 @ Officeworks

100

As far as I can tell, this is the same phone at Coles for $49.50. It is definitely the 4g model, and I have had good solid 4g reception for the last week.

The ZTE Fit Mobile Phone comes with the Android 4.4 operating system, a quad core processor and 1 GB of RAM so you can enjoy a powerful smartphone experience. It is compatible with expandable memory up to 32 GB so you'll be able to store your photos, music, videos and more.

  • Screen: 4.5" FWVGA TFT (480 x 854) capacitive touch display
  • Camera: Rear: 5MP with Flash. Front: 2MP
  • Storage: 8GB (4.6GB available to the user) /microSD™ card, up to 32 GB
  • Operating system: Android 4.4 (Kit Kat)
  • Video: 30 fps @ 720p.
  • Processor: 1.3GHz Quad-core Processor
  • Connection: Bluetooth 4.0|Wi-Fi|Micro USB
  • Warranty: 12 Months

As mentioned above I picked up a couple of these last week and the one I have been using has been pretty solid so far.

Notes:
1. No "storage" issue out of the box. If you check the ZTE website, they mention that the newer build phones do not have the same storage issue. So these from Officeworks seem to be a good deal, and save you having to run the "fix".
2. GPS takes a (long) while to get a location lock. After the initial wait time it seems ok. I used it on the bus and it kept up well travelling across town.
3. Haven't had any overheating issues that others have reported.
4. Cheap cases on ebay (~$6 delivered)
5. Cheap unlock codes for $5.95

I will be using the other as a "travel" phone, so will be rooting and unlocking that one shortly. Will post again if any issues using it overseas.

Ooops - Rookie mistake. Thanks for the pickup.

  • Does it support USB host mode though?

      no it does not

      • Any cheap android phone that does support USB Host mode??

I thought Benyboy was wrong, because there is a section in Settings->Storage which says "Mount USB storage" "Insert USB storage for mounting". Both of these are greyed out, so I tried inserting an OTG cable and a USB stick, no go, nothing happens. Probably there is no 5V supply in the device, unlike tablets. I tried the same on an old Pendo Pad tablet and it worked, so the phone is the problem. Possibly it might work with a powered hub, but I don't have a working one with me, so I can't test.

  • ok I'm gonna buy one of these as my backup phone. Can anybody tell me how to contact bagman to unlock the phone please?

    Thanks!

    • Just keep in mind that the zte fit is missing a frequency band. This isn't a problem with Optus network but is with other telcos. Unlocking it for use with another network isn't as lucrative as it might appear.

Ronnnie said "The biggest downside to the ZTE Fit is it's missing 3g 850 mhz, which is an important band if you use Telstra, Boost or other Telstra resellers such as Aldi. So I would only recommend this phone for use on Optus network."

  • Just a warning for Telstra users -
YOU CAN NOT RECEIVE INCOMING CALLS ON TELSTRA NETWORK WITH THIS PHONE.

    • Do you mean you can't receive Telstra network because the phone is locked to Optus, or do you mean it won't work at all with Telstra even after unlocking? And is this from personal experience, because this post suggests it will work once unlocked:

Bought one on Sunday, unlocked via bagman. It is missing the main telstra 3G frequencies which are used for incoming calls. 850mhz I believe.
The 4G works amazingly, the outgoing calls are possible, but poor. Incoming calls are non-existant and go straight to voicemail.

Thanks a lot for the information. I was about buy this one for vodafone network.

Now that you have given that description, I recall seeing a similar description on Whirlpool, a few months ago before I bought mine. That person found an awkward workaround: disabling 4G apparently makes incoming calls work, but the data drops back to 2G speed: http://whrl.pl/RemJnW

You can flip between fast data and no incoming calls, or slow data and incoming calls.

Telstra compatibility may improve, if/when Telstra rolls out VoLTE.

It apparently works on Vodafone 4G, see

However I've also seen a comment that some calls will go to voicemail:

        • Thanks I will check the link.

          @Russ:

Update: At work in Hawthorn, VIC, I can receive incoming calls fine. But at home in Bentleigh East I simply cannot receive calls. I suppose it depends on the towers.

  • What frequencies does this use?

This phone lacks 3g 850 mhz band. So isn't really a good choice for telstra. The Alcatel pixi 4.5 that optus sell cheap too or Telstra buzz 4g would be better choices for Telstra network.

It is showing as $99 @ Officeworks.

    • I've always wondered, when I see the price has just changed back to normal, should I hit "report" to get a mod to mark the deal as expired?

  • These were only $49 at Officeworks while Coles had them at $49.50 so they were inline with their 'cheapest price guaranteed or we'll beat it' policy.

As soon as Coles' catalogue finished at 11:59pm 03/11 - they went back up to full price at Officeworks.

I purchased one of these things as an in-between phone waiting for my Nexus 6P to come, and I'd be more than happy paying $99 for it. It's a lot of phone for a little money. Being $49 was just insanely good.

    • Or if you are not locked into android, the Microsoft Lumia 532 was unbelievable at $29 at Woolies. That price will most likely come around again. Unlocking it though is about $20 - but it isn't missing a band either.

      • The lumia 532 has no 4g. I'd rather the ZTE.

  • Thanks OP. Great post.
