160

I just noticed the Nexus Player is currently $108 at Harvey Norman (website), a saving of $21.

That's all, nothing more to say.

  • I have found the Nexus Player to be the most troublesome device in my stable of similar.

In particular, it's WiFi stability is atrocious.

    A good price though…

That's strange, mine has been rock solid since day one. Have you tried updating the ROM?

      • yup, done everything possible. i have six units from four different batches and they all exhibit similar issues.

the "solution" that google suggests is not available for use in Australia, though a USB Ethernet dongle with a OTG cable does.

        all in all, too fiddly.

OTOH, the Chromebox has been the go-to device for all our OTT needs at home…

          OTG on the go

          OTOH on the other hand

          OTT on the toilet?

        • Have you tried a different router?

        • @aboabo:
thanks for deciphering this for me.

        • Which router are you using?

six units? sounds like its your wifi network at home…

        • a range of Wifi APs - consumer/prosumer/enterprise, Ubiquiti, Mikrotik etc etc. similar issues.

this is work - not fun. i have literally a host of OTT devices rotating on-and-off a test bench.

and i still stand by my statement that Wifi on the Nexus Players suck.

No problems for me, mine works fine. Love Kodi for it.

  • No ethernet :(

Does the new Chromecast powerbrick that has inbuilt ethernet work for this?

  • This or Raspberry Pi?

    • Might sound stupid (not sure what you're using it for) but if you just want to run Kodi, an old phone plugged into the TV actually does the job. Something around a Samsung Galaxy S3 level, an iPhone 4 will manage but stuttering can occur during streaming which for me doesn't quite cut it.

    • For Kodi an android box on eBay is another option.

  • Is this similar to Android TV or both are completely different?

      This is Android TV.

      • Thanks Clear.

  • I have to say that my time with the nexus player has had its ups and downs…

It really is a great piece of hardware sometimes, and others it is just downright frustrating!

At first it was brilliant with it voice search i would use it all the time for youtube and plex is great on it… Then i started using Kodi again after a long hiatus and the machine really comes into its own… But now the voice search does not work at all, which seems to be a very common complaint from a variety of users, it tends to "hang" alot more often than i care for, and even after all this time there still is hardly any apps for it, with many android tv apps being silo'd off on specific hardware such as tv's with built in android tv.

I would strongly recommend this if all you were going to do was chuck kodi on it (fire tv has a better remote but with some keymapping you can achieve much the same thing).
