  • What's the best 16GB desktop deal atm? Something like this? http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B006YG9EEW/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=…

  • GREAT price but I'm thinking this won't work with the new 27" late 2015 iMacs yeah? Such a shame as the RAM for those is about $190 locally.

    • +1

It should work, but this ram will be slightly slower than the default Apple ram. The standard Apple ram included with the late 2015 27" iMac is 1866mhz, while this ram is 1600mhz (which was the standard in the 5K 27" models before the late 2015 refresh).

Also worth mentioning that the late 2015 new 27" iMac can run 2133mhz ram. If you go this route, you should take out the Apple ram if you don't want the higher speed ram to be downclocked. As soon as I can find a decent price I'm going to order four 8GB sticks of the Kingston HyperX Impact 2133mhz ram to put in mine, as heaps of people on the MacRumors forums have confirmed it works without any issue ^__^ There was also a Crucial 2133mhz one being recommended, I think it was the Ballistix Sport from memory…

      • Thanks for that great info! So I'm guessing if I use this then the currently installed RAM of 1866mhz will just downclock to 1600 to match this 3rd party RAM? If so I bet the loss in performance will be trivial yeah?

If I was to save $80 I'd suspect the 0.1% speed loss in RAM wouldn't make any difference?

Edit: I just checked on the Corsair system compatibility checker as someone linked above and it came back with:
"Sorry, this part is not compatible. view compatible parts
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) iMac17,1 check another system"

        • Actually, looks like it works (on its own at least)! Someone on MacRumours tested + benchmarked a bunch of modules with the late 2015 iMac 5K, and this deal's Crucial model happened to be one of them. http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ram-question.1928280/pag…

He didn't test it combined with the Apple memory though, he used four 8gb sticks of the Crucial - maybe that's why they say it's not compatible? (Or they just haven't updated?) Apple ram is 1866 CL13, this is 1600 CL11 (CL = latency, lower CL number = better). My guess is that it'll still run them both at 1600 but I'm not sure how those latency/CL ratings come into play. It could even be 1333mhz depending on how the Apple ram runs at slower speeds? No idea I'm afraid - I only researched the Kingstons. If you want to match the Apple ram exactly, look for something 1866mhz CL13. Or just take the Apple ram out… But so long as the ram is 204 pin, Unbuffered, can run at 1.35v (aka DDR3L), it'll most likely run.

PS: it's not really an $80 saving, more like $40-50… A 16gb (2x8gb) kit of 1866mhz Kingstons is $149 from PC Case Gear, and the faster 2133mhz kit is $159 (+ ship or free VIC pickup). I'm all for a good bargain (which is why I'm currently hunting for a better 2133mhz price haha) but when you splurge on something as $$$$ as a 5K iMac, compromising the ram speed for a $40 saving doesn't make much sense to me ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • can these work on non-MAC ?? Lenovo x240/x250 ??

  • I'm eager to see Corsair Vengeance DDR4 on sale :D

  • I love mackies!

  • cool….thanks

  • Nice. $80 cheaper than maxfixit…..

I got this model from Amazon

    Crucial 8GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL11 SODIMM 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory CT102464BF160B.

Works fine in my late 2014 27" iMac. Registered the entire 32gig worth without issues. Paid $39USD per stick on the 12 Oct as a price comparison. I was very happy with the price considering what it costs here in AU for the same memory.
