I recently purchased Sony A6000 , sony is running a $150 visa card promotion on a6000 which makes the JB price a very good deal.. was looking around for a prime lens and this seems to be a good price.

looking to get an a6000 as well, how much did you get it for?

    • Considering an A6000 as well but rumor has it that a replacement will be out in Jan 2016.

      • I've heard that rumour but its been going on for nearly a year now?

        • Yeah it is very overdue. But this recent update looks promising

          http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr4-looks-like-the-sony-a6100…

But I am not too keen on a Mid-Nov release as the A68 was launched and it feels unlikely that Sony will bring an A6000 replacment out so soon.

@aim54x: yeah, i have been holding out for an a6100 or a7000 but with the dollar dropping, the JB deal looks like the best it will be in awhile.

        • @epicttiimm: I hear you, I am just being greedy as I am using an A7.

      http://www.sony.com.au/microsite/summerwithsony/

and I am going overseas so will get GST return

      • thanks so you got body only? or with lens kit?
also anyone know of a good deal on the 35mm f1.8 lens atm?

        • +2

I just got the body, but I had Videopro match the price of this camera and then I paid by mastercard to get another $20 off..

So here is what my end price will come out to be

          $679 - $20(Amex video pro offer) - $150(Sony Visa card) - $61(GST return) = $448 for the a6000 body only

I have nex lens kits and signa 30mm from my 4 year old Nex camera, hence I didn't need the kit lens

        • I got the 35mm f1.8 during a 20% off eBay sale from Ted's for $400. Just wait for ebays monthly 20% sale :)

      • That is tempting….and I have adapters and lenses (nothing native E-mount though)

    • I got one a week ago for JB for $843 (they price matched Harvey Norman). HN still appear to have it on sale http://www.harveynorman.com.au/sony-alpha-a6000-16-50mm-lens…

  • Great lens and a great price. I got mine for $180-odd but that was when the dollar was far stronger.

JB Hifi also got the Sony SELP1650 16-50mm Lens for $199, which is a good price for local good. (can claim GST if…)

I think this is a better option for travelling, on top of any other lens depending on your own preferences.
(the single lens kit at HN is better value)

  • I've got the 35mm f1.8 on my a6000 and I love it. Heard good things about this lens too. Not sure I need both or do I?

    • +2

This 50 one is narrower than the 35. That's the reason I stick with the 35.

    • +3

35mm is better as you can "zoom with your feet". I find the 50mm a bit narrow indoors but it was 2/5ths of the price at the time.

      • 50mm is better as you can "zoom out with your feet" :)

        • +3

I tend to hit a wall when I do that inside :p

I own both, only use the 35mm 90+% of the time - I'd say don't worry. I would sell the 50mm very readily if I thought I could get back some decent $. Both great lenses. 35mm lens is actually slightly smaller than the 50mm too, enough that it makes a difference. The focal length of the 35mm is perfect for taking to parties and for (on the a6000) having a small camera that is excellent in low light with fast and accurate autofocus.

      • Thanks, one of the first times I've been talked out of buying something here!

Good lens, good price. I managed to score one for $195 from Videopro last year when it was on special - doubt it will ever be that cheap again unless our exchange rate improves significantly! Excellent portrait lens for the a5/6k bodies. For what it's worth, the 19mm (28mm equivalent view on a 35mm camera) Sigma Art lens is an excellent purchase as well - currently $179 at DirtCheap.

    • I think most of us already have the 16mm 2.8 pancake lens from the kit.

Any recommendation for around about 30mm with OS and ~1.8 and <$200?

      :) :) :)

      • Cheapest that's remotely close would be the Sigma Art which is 30mm F2.8 at around $179 but no OSS.

  • As other people are saying I paid $188 last year and it's a great lens.

The 35mm would be far more practical for shooting indoors though, wish there was a deal on that.

  • why is this so cheap compared to the SEL55F18Z? (apart from brand?)
is the lens advertised full frame?

    • +1

SEL55F18Z is full frame, so works better on A7 etc. This lens is not.
      SEL55F18Z is also extremely sharp.
Most companies have very cheap 50mm lenses - they are fairly simple to design and make, no need for many special materials.
The better question is why is the SEL55F18Z so expensive? Because they can, and because its good enough people will pay the premium.

This is a good lens for portraits, but not so great in crowded environments. Try taking your 18-55 lens, zooming it in al the way and see how it feels to take photos with - its a bit awkward.

      • This is not a Full-frame len mate

        • As I said: "SEL55F18Z is full frame, so works better on A7 etc. This lens is not."

    • This lens is not full frame, I have tried it on my A7 (with APS-C crop OFF). However there are some rumors that it can be modified to be close to full frame, similar to the Sigma DN 19/30/60 lenses.

  • +2

I would not get this and use it for portrait lens, because of the crop factor, its essentially a 75 mm lens.

I would get the 35mm 1.8 if you want to take portraits

    • +1

Depends on what sort of photo you take. If it is whole to maybe 2/3 of the body then yes a "normal" (ie 50mm equivalent) is fine. If you do close up portraits (mainly the face) then no - a telephoto in the 80mm to 120mm range (35mm equivalent) is best as it's more flattering (the wider lenses can distort the face when close up). It also makes the subject a little more relaxed as you're not so close. Cheers.

      • 50mm on a apsc sensor will not be convenient to take nice portraits unless you like standing like 5 meters away from the subject

        • +2

May not be convenient, but if doing standard head/shoulder portraits then there is still some distortion on a 50mm equivalent. See here for an example: http://s019.radikal.ru/i629/1212/1e/2dcdb5fe2086.jpg

My favourite portrait lens length in 90mm. Yes you do need to stand back, but the difference is noticeable. If you don't do close up portraits, then a 50mm is fine. Cheers.

    • I have used both and get a much higher better portrait shots from the 50mm lens.
The 35mm is easier to use in tight situations, but I got better bokeh and clearer shots from the 50

  • +2

So a 50mm f/1.8 prime lens with Image Stabilization (OSS) priced less than 250$! Canon and Nikon, I hope you guys are taking note.
