    LED-TN

    That's why it's cheap.

    • +4

      TN still has its advantages.
Good luck finding a 1ms IPS panel for that price.

      • +7

        Good enough for 4k porn

      • +12

Ill take 4ms with better viewing angles, better colours, better contrast any day over a 1ms TN panel.

        But, they're also not cheap.

  • +1

Seems to be the cheapest around by a decent margin, good find!

  • -6

    2.5 star energy rating

    No deal.

    • +2

the "star energy rating" can be misleading and confusing…as how they compare or rate it so.

      • +5

What, are they doing a reverse Volkswagen?

  • +12

This is the normal price though, it's been $498 for a looooong time.

    • Yeah this particular model isn't anything great and its been sitting at this price for ages now, simply because in that same price range i could buy a benq, or any other 4k gaming 1ms monitor with better everything.

$500 is an insanely huge/decent amount of money and it can be made to jump and leap rather than settle for a fast jog like this

  • I have this monitor, decent quality panel, good stand with the ability to rotate to portrait, the downwards angle can be increased a lot by filing a little metal of the hinge on the stand. built in speakers are fairly terrible.

    • any chance it has a 3.5mm headphone input?

      • Yes it does

        • thats an audio input. no output. The last monitor i had had an output but the sound quality was terrible.

      • U mean an output

    • +9

Wait people use inbuilt monitor speakers?

      • +3

        deaf people

I bought it way back then, been using it ever since. I haven't had a single problem with it so far (touch wood) and I love it. Plays games beautifully, movies look great.
My only problem with it is actually a problem with Windows 8, in that not everything scales properly at 4k resolution. But that's not the monitors fault haha

    • +1

So true about the scaling. I had so much trouble with Windows 7 & 8.1 but so far I've found Windows 10 is worlds ahead with the 4K support. It looks great

      • +1

Yeah, I've definitely heard that Win10 improves support for 4k
But it's gaming support and issues have prevented me from upgrading yet.

  • at this size, isn't 4k kinda pointless as you won't notice any difference? whether viewing 4k content or not

    • +6

Tell that to Sony Xperia Z5 Premium owners.

      • Not just Z5, most high end tablets and phones have ridiculous ppi in comparison to monitors.

    • -1

not unless your nose is like 5cm away from the screen!

    • +2

How else can you count the pubic hairs?

  • -3

I find it funny that 4k is cheaper than 1440p

    • +25

Crappy 4K is cheaper than good 1440p.

    • Resolution is not the only price factor. Panel type, response rate, backlighting type, response rate, refresh rate, colour range, panel size, stand adjustment, viewing angle etc…

      • And response rate…

        • The second one on the list…. Well it isn't the whole list there a more like Build quality….so much factors…

  • Is it only 30hz when run at 4k resolution like many other cheaper 4k monitors?

    • +4

      Nope, 60Hz.

    • tantryl is correct, 60Hz and 1ms lag

Unfortunately it won't be Chroma 4:4:4 (happy to be wrong).

      • +1

it is chroma 444, but you will need to use display port

        • Really?

That's a game changer for $500 then! My only gripe now is 28" isn't big enough for a 4K monitor, I'll go have a look at some in person maybe I can be convinced otherwise. Am not a gamer so it probably comes down to scaling

        • @Click_It:
Also the only way to run 60hz is via Displayport, HDMI is 1.4a spec which is 3840x2160 @ 30hz maximum.

        • i find standard windows fonts are comfortable to read around an arms length away.

        • For me its cad photo edit and wp so might have a look

        • @Click_It: You could get a cheap 4k TV panel.

Personally, I prefer a lower res IPS to to a high res TN, although I haven't seen this monitor in real life.

        • @RedHab:

To be perfectly honest, I think what I really need is one of those 34" ultra wide 21:9 monitors. For the last 10 years I've ran dual monitors so I think that best suits me in a single monitor. Unfortunately not available for $500 but they have been steadily coming down in price.

AOC U3477PQU is sub $900 these days, the others brands are floating around the $1200 mark still.

  • How is 4K for gaming?
What kind of GPU do you need to run some of the newer 2015 games?

    • -1

I run a water cooled 980TI and have it overclocked (running nearly 140% of stock clocks) and can I just say that I wouldnt bother with 4k yet! Would have to buy another card and run an SLI'd system! Fallout 4 which isnt too graphically intense has dropped to 70fps @ 1080p lowest I have seen.

    • I run a 10% overclocked hybrid trifire r9 295x2 and r9 290x for 60hz 4k on an Asus PB287Q. Shame, the third card doesn't get utilised in a lot of games. 60hz sadly doesn't cut it for CS:GO and other shooters. I still get by happily though (I am rank LE, if that means anything to you), but 1080p and a higher refresh rate is far better for shooters.

For new games, I'd recommend a 980ti, 970 sli, R9 390 crossfire or a R9 Fury X. Personally, I think the Fury X will see the best gains in terms of current performance and future performance with DX12 becoming the standard in the next couple years. Whereas Nvidia, whilst claiming to support all DX 12 features, actually do not. Additionally, AMD's only market place at the moment is at higher resolutions.

  • 980 Ti would be a good start thin sli it later

  • Input lag ok? How many Hz would this be? Thx

  • -1

stop talking like those x ms matter, it doesnt if you are just an average gamer! a true gamer would have bought those 1000+$ monitor hardcore ones already!

  • I bought the Samsung U28D590 for $499 last year thanks to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/161040
I guess during that time the AUD has tanked it, but I'm still not sure that one year on, $500 for a brand name entry level 4k 28" is great value.

Beware that you will need displayport for 60hz. My understanding is that HDMI 1.4 only does 4K on 30hz; you need HDMI 2 for 4k@60hz but HDMI 2 still seems pretty rare.

  • Just a newbie gamer question, I'm well into gtaV and bf4 with a bit of track mania on occasion, currently using an old 19" dell Led monitor. Will this be a good step up and noticeable difference (apart for the size)? Will I be happy with the res and quality? I will use display port if I had it. Is there something else I should look at? I'm not a hardcore gamer, just want a bigger display and 4K would be a bonus if it's good.

    Cheers in advance!

    • You will see a difference, but if your graphics card is not powerful enough then you're probably not gonna be enjoying the game playing experience.

    • What graphics card are you using? And what fps do you get running it on med-high atm? There are better monitors out there if you can't make use of 4k resolution.

    • +1

You will need a hardcore gamer's budget if you want to play games at a 4k resolution.

4k is roughly 4 times more demanding than 1080p.

e.g a mid-end PC with a middle end GPU may run GTA5 OK on a crappy 1600 x 900 resolution monitor, however once you bump the resolution up to 4k it'll start choking. The GPU required to run GTA5 at 4k resolutions would have to be pretty beefy — something in the R9 Fury X range (or more commonly, a dual GPU setup)

      • At native res, you are right. That being said, scaling is excellent if you change to 1080p (perfect ratio for scaling for this monitor). That way you can have your extra res for desktop use, and then move to a more normal resolution for gaming.

      • currently running an evga GTX770 2GB (will be upgrade soon), 16gb ram, i5 4620k OC'd to 4.0ghz. this setup runs everything i want to play. framerate varies with game, 50fps to 266fps (the later with trackmania). i dont have an issue with lag, i let the evga software atou tune the best settings for me. 4k doesnt phase me but if its got it, i have something to worktowards. to be honest i probably will scale down a little..

the monitor is whats holding me back. cant decide what to get. biggest on a budget i guess. but will pay if its worth it.

        • +2

I would rather a 24 inch monitor that has a refresh rate of 120-144hz rather than getting a 4k monitor. I don't see 4k being that great unless it's a 40+ inch TV.

    • +2

This is why I love OZB, everyone helps each other out regardless of the question

  • Would this be good for a macbook - to use an extended monitor?
Will it even work with apple?

    • +1

Don't see why not, as long as it's got a mini dp port (or thunderbolt port).
I'm not sure whether macbook air can handle 4k though, mbp retina should be fine.

    • +1

Apple Macs support normal display standards. Not all Macs support 4K resolutions though. My first gen 13" Pro Retina doesn't for example. Best to check Apple support docs or Wikipedia etc.

    • +1

This Apple page outlines official 4K support.
      https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202856
Refresh rate support depends on whether the monitor supports MST or only SST. Read the above page for more detail.

  • how is it compare to samsung U24E850R (570 dollars) please?

  • +1

Wouldn't mind a new monitor, just have to wait until my 24 inch lcd breaks and the price comes down.

    • +1

If it's a Dell 2405/2407 etc then you could be waiting a while. I have 2 and mine are still perfect. I've been looking for an excuse to upgrade for a year or 2 now. Might just have to bite the bullet and keep these as spares :)

      • It is a Benq, it is just too hard to justify buying it when I don't need it, I do want it and probably would have bit the bullet when I was younger.

        • I hear you.

I sold a house last year, moved to a cheaper area, had a lumpsum available and still couldn't justify it. (at the time $1500 for a LG 34UM95)

Maybe a good thing because now I'm doing the reverse and need every cent.
