  • The capacity really ticks me off but good deal!

Yeah, why 200? And not a binary?

      • +1

It is either A) SanDisk decided that they can sell something in between 128gb and 256gb, or B) it was literally as far as they could stretch the memory (perhaps they got to 205gb or something but 200gb is easier to market).

      • Why should it be "a binary"?

        Even then it's not really a binary. A 256 GB card will be 256 000 000 000 bytes which isn't a power of 2. A proper "binary" 256 GB card would be 256 GiB and would be 274 877 906 944 bytes.

The memory block is probably made up of smaller blocks containing a certain amount of data and simply the 200GB value has come from how many blocks would physically fit with their current semiconductor size. It's a round number - I presume there's some redundancy in these devices for bad blocks to be handled so they rounded it off at a "neat" 200 billion bytes.

Hehe … I like that description

  • what devices can use this actually? many tablets etc only accept up to 64Gb?

    • Most newer devices will be able to accept this, really you'll have to check on a per-device basis first. Some only do 64 (though those are older devices), many are 128, and most within the 6-12 months should accept 200gb.

      • The Sony Xperia Z5 specifically states compatibility with a 200 Gb MicroSD.

    • It works in my Samsung Galaxy Mini from 2011 running CM11. If it hasn't worked for whatever reason, formatting to FAT32 normally fixes it.

    • Any device that is fully compatible with the SDXC spec will be able to use this card and any higher capacity cards (when available) with no problem.

Tablets/etc state 64/128/200 as max as that is likely the highest tested size when the device was released and the official spec sheet finalized…. this is of course assuming said device supports exFAT as that is what the official format for SDXC cards is.

  • might be for broader market than phones as this stuff needs to be backed up. Some lap tops that only have 128 GB flash storage come with memory card slots, so it's an easy way to expand the storage of laptops, without having stuff hanginging out the side of you notebook

  • +2

Some devices state compatible with 64GB or 128GB because that is all they tested it with and not because of a system limitation. Of course your device may actually be limited to a lower amount.

Use Internet Search to see if anyone has got higher capacity to work.

    • In general, if the phone/tab can take 128GB cards - this is also good to go.

Works in Sony Z3, if anyone wondering :)

      • +1

        I was, I have a Sony Z3, so thanks!

"With a retail price of $200 and a weight of just 0.5 grams, you'll want to be extra-careful with this minuscule memory chip, as it's worth about 11 times its weight in gold."

    "Wired", 2010, talking about a 32GB microsd

  • Is 200GB the hard limit for SDXC?

    • +1

      no that would be 2TB

      • Is there an explanation for why these cards are 200GB and bot 256GB?

        • +1

Sandisk couldnt shove enough data into the space of a fingernail

  • +11

Might want to hold off on this for a while. This web page shows that the Sandisk Ultra 200GB Micro SD is going on a Gold Box deal at 60% off sale starting at 11:59pm (not sure if that's Australian or USA time) scroll down to the third row down to the right. 60% off the full $249.99 price at calculation shows a $100 USD sale price + delivery.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/goldbox/ref=gbps_ftr_s-3_4782_wht_5…

That upcoming Gold Box deal on this is going to smash this deal in the thread.

So be warned i'd suggest not paying this $143 USD + delivery price in the topic when in a few hours it will be at $100 USD + delivery.

    • +1

If you can't find it here's a screen cap of the upcoming 60% off deal.

Good catch. I don't really need it but $100 might sway me. Silly for memory though which is always going down in price to buy too far ahead though.

      • Yeah i think it's going to be a Lightning Deal, not a Gold Box deal like i thought. Still $100 USD on an upcoming Lightning Deal isn't too bad. And it seems to be on 11:59pm AEST since it's showing for me as 11.59pm and i'm in Queensland. Goes by your local time i think. Want to be keen to get it at that price being up late at night to get it.

    • +4

      Very good.

I will now be ~$145? poorer thanks to you.

    • Damn it.. they dont ship to Sydney on this deal!!! :( :(
edit - they said that it doesnt ship to some locations but when I kept going through the order, it still took it. Went tight on the shipping since expedited and regular shipping is only 2 working days difference max.

Ended up being $155 delivered with their currency exchange.

      • Can someone someone directly link to this deal please?

        • No. It's long gone now. There was limited stock. When I looked about 2-3am AEST it was 71% fulfilled so no doubt sold out quickly as it was a good deal.

        • @Shonky:

Ah thanks anyway. Probably a bit expensive anyway- given 128gb cards have been down to like $66.

        • It started at 1am on the dot AEST. Ran for about 30 minutes before all the stock was gone. This has to be the cheapest price on the 200GB MicroSD card. I'm glad I stayed up for it.. haha

        • @ycon: It is if you look at it as bang for buck, $$ per GB wise. I usually only get one of the top cards when it comes down within the decent range (ie. was $100 but bumped up to $150 with the deprecated AUD). It will usually go into my main device (Galaxy Note Edge). Every other device will get either the hand me down, or whatever largest capacity available for $60 or so.

        • @ycon:
Original deal link has 128GB cards for USD$49.99 + delivery so a bit better if looking at $/GB

    • +1

Thanks!! You're a hero! I bought it last night during the lightning deal.

      • You're welcome!. I suppose a saving of $43 is nothing to sneeze at and considering this is Ozbargain.

    • Love ya man, stayed up late to get it, only to get up for work at 4:30am :(

    • Thanks for the tip! @hollykryten

  • 128GB is a great price also at $50 US, I don't know if that is standard but I'm sure thinking about getting that for my GoPro.

  • got the 200gb from the previous deal. tested and it does 56mb/s reading, 13.9mb/s writing on a usb 3 card reader if anyone is interested
