Telstra’s $60 BYO Mobile Phone Plan with 9GB Data Reduced from $70 (New Customers only)

170

Hello people, we all want more for less, well telstra has lowered their prices on their BYO plans, $60 you can get 9GB and unlimited calls.

This is a great deal for anyone who needs a decent priced sim plan.

Telstra’s Large BYO Mobile plan, online only, is usually $70 per month for 7GB of included data, unlimited call credit and unlimited SMS. At the moment, though, you get a massive 3GB of extra data (that’s 10GB total), and the online-only plan is discounted by $10 per month, so it’s $60 for 1GB of Telstra data, guys, the creme de la creme. And you get a free 12-month subscription to Apple Music, potentially saving you $144. And access to discounted movie tickets through Telstra Thanks.

All other bonus data is available to new and recontracting customers on selected plans. Bonus data will remain on your account until you recontract, cancel your plan or move to an ineligible plan. Unused data expires monthly. Offer ends December 31, 2015

UPDATE: Look at that, Telstra has increased its data. Guess the data wars of 2016 have started early. Thanks to Evio for the info.

Also available is a medium plan, info here : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/221295

    Large*

Also more importantly, the medium and small plans are $10 cheaper too, making the medium plan astoundingly good value!

      Sorry, fixed

  • The medium plan is now 7GB and also discounted, to $40/month.
Seems a better deal unless the $1000 talk is not enough.

They've scrapped the $200 sign up bonus tho, but i think this is even better, if you plan to stick with them :D

Tho someone said its only $10 off for 24 months so just double check whether that is true or not before you jump on it…

      • It doesn't mention this anywhere. Wonder where they saw that. From the wording I would not expect the price to go up, just that you're locked into a contract for 12months.

        • Excellent, that seals the deal for me :)

    Nothing for existing customers :(

That how most telco's work, hook you then make a better cheaper plan. A month after I got my iphone5s 16gb you could get the 32gb for the same price I paid.

      • Yes but even existing customers no longer on the hook (contract expired) aren't being given this offer. It's a great promo. Gives existing customers incentive to leave.

Optus isnt bad, I started with 1.5gb (mobile data) but when they increased the data on my plan I just asked and received. Same with home phone/internet.

@Apple96: I'm currently on contract with Telstra and they won't budge at all for increased data on the same plan for the same price. Won't be sticking with the company when the contract expires. Never had any issues with Optus for both phone and internet. Will be going back soon

          @Apple96:

I literally spent all day yesterday on chat (and lunchtime on the phone) with Telstra. I got 5 different contradictory responses about what is required to qualify as a new customer. I raised a complaint over this which I've been told on Facebook has was closed because they weren't able to reach a satisfactory conclusion with me - less than 10 hours after the complaint was raised. I am to say the least, irritated.

    • I used the 24x7 Chat and they told me I could upgrade from Medium to Large by recontracting via the online sign-up form, even though my current contract doesn't end until May 2016.

That said, they've dispatched a new SIM (god knows why), but my account hasn't been converted yet. I'm not overly optimistic that Telstra won't f&*# it up.

      • Soooooo, the order didn't go through and spoke to someone from Chat 24x7 who told me I wasn't eligible as I was an existing customer. I said, cancel the order and she put me through to someone else — I also received an extra SIM for my data share I didn't need, which had to be cancelled regardless.

That guy said because I was told I could have it (even though I was supposed to), he was going to honour it. He activated then and there and within 10-15mins got the $60/mth unlimited call/text/SMS and 7.1GB (100MB from Data Share SIM) confirmations.

In typical fashion, another plan change with Telstra that involved at least 3 contacts. It's becoming the norm!

Must stay connected for 12 months.

    No thanks.

No lock in contract required thanks.

  • Didn't Telstra have issues with Apple Music subscription?

    • Apple music seems to work fine on telstra. On Android it seems to stop for no reason occasionally but you just have to hit play again. It's in beta so it's doing ok for that.

  • Can you combine with existing home and internet for further discount? Also, can you buy additional sim cards like you can with optus?

  • Can you use the $60 towards google play credits ?

    • No I don't believe so. I believe that is only for prepaid, not postpaid plans.

Spent most of today clarifying what "new customer" means on 24x7 chat and literally got 5 different answers, lots of bizzare offers for much worse plans and the refusal to escalate and lodge complaints. The Telstra staff were inconsistent, rude, slow and incompetent to deal with.

Their own prepaid plans are much better value but 28 day expiry not calendar month…
The $40 recharge gives you 3GB day + 3GB night (6GB), and $350 in international calls as well as 40 to spend on Google Play. And if you transfer $10 of that credit to another phone it gives that phone an extra 1GB without taking it from you.

The $50 recharge gives you 4GB day + 4GB night (8GB), and $550 in international calls as well as $50 to spend on Google Play. And if you transfer $10 of that credit to another phone it gives that phone an extra 1GB without taking it from you.

Data also rolls over to the following month so some months you'll have more to use because you used less the previous month.

So you are almost certainly better off without a contract on a prepaid phone. You can also set it up to automatically recharge.

If you are an existing customer you won't get any of the extra data so all you'll get at the moment is $10 off.

It is unbelievable to me that they run their business like this.

"The Telstra staff were inconsistent, rude, slow and incompetent to deal with" the entire reason my family has been with optus since 2005/6

    • Apparently the new prepaid deals are still calendar month if you set direct debit payment method with auto recharge. Though, the data won't roll over.

The $40 post-paid gives 7GB data. But yes, no google play credit.

      • +1

With prepaid you pay almost an extra "month" per year because it's 28 days. I dare say google play credit won't last forever either. Still a better deal than a plan.

      • Another benefit for Telstra pre paid is using your credit to buy roaming data packs.

They're expensive, and I'd prob never pay real money for them, but on my last trip through 3 countries, I was able to have 600MB of roaming data for "free" with the advantage of connectivity from the minute my phone was on after landing. Prob saved me $80-100 if I'd had to buy a SIM card in each country.

Make sure you have any app updates set to wifi only, and don't send too many photos via whatsapp etc till you have wifi, but it worked quite well for me. I get enough credit each year to save $200 or so in SIM card fees while on holidays.

No calls, but then just about everyone these days has whatsapp / line / viber / skype on their phone so I don't see that as being too big an issue.

        • I am travelling soon and have one post paid and one prepaid with telstra. Was looking at roaming data options but couldn't find any suitable. What prepaid option did you have?

  • If I'm already on the BYO month to month, could I move to another provider and come back to get this deal? Has anyone tried this?

  • I'm currently with iiNet paying $45/month for 4GB of data (no contract). I hate the idea of contracts though… so tempting to jump over. $5 cheaper a month for 3GB more quota.

  • Hey. Guys. Telstra is not unlimited. You can not call 13 numbers. Unless you want to talk to a Telstra 13 number. Very clever wording. Not good Telstra

    • "Go Mobile Plans: Some usage is excluded, such as calls/text/MMS to premium numbers (e.g. 19xx numbers), 1234, 12455, 12456 and satellite numbers, content charges and use overseas. Unused allowances expire monthly. If you cancel early, you must repay the remaining handset repayments in addition to any early termination charges for your service." It's a premium number, every telco is like that. My optus plan lets me call America, but if I called a 1300 number id be charged.
