Nikon Lenses AF-S DX 35mm F1.8g $164.2/AF-S 50mm F1.8g $174.6 (after $35 Nikon Cashback), WU-1a Wi-Fi Adapter $32 @ TGG eBay

CXMASTECH

Been seeing a bit of love for Canon lenses and Sony cameras today but not much for Nikon. Well, in particular for those who got one of the D3300 deals recently and are looking for some extra gear to go with it, there's some great deals on Nikon lenses and the WU-1a Wi-Fi adapter at The Good Guys. Note that until the 29th November, Nikon have an extra $35 Cashback on both the Nikon Nikkor AF-S DX 35mm F1.8G Lens and the Nikkor AF-S 50mm 1.8G Lens. The Good Guys are an authorised Nikon reseller so there should be no problems claiming the Cashback. There's extra Cashback on other lenses also, but those lenses are priced well beyond my current budget!

All of these prices seem to be by far the best I can find anywhere. I'm heading overseas at Chrissy and the above 4 items should work out around $500 after the GST refund!

Apologies in advance for any minor calculation errors in the above prices… I've had a few wines over dinner.

          @AussieDaddy:

Sorry I just saw your link.

That's the Autofocus motor making the noise, not manual focus. It's actually relatively quiet and quick. You'll find some AF motors that are much noisier and slower!

The manual focus doesn't make noise as it's the motor that causes the noise. Also manual is much smoother so you can tell the difference.

        • @Hoju: That's a very good news to hear, Hoju. I bought the 55-300mm and already picked it up from a store yesterday (though I haven't still got time to play with it) so if that noise wasn't caused by manual focusing then I am very delighted. :)

    • My girlfriend has it. It's a solid lens. Takes nice pictures and has a lot of reach. A little slow to auto focus.

    • The 55 200 is cheaper. I have the older version. It's great for a cheap, light, tele zoom, and focuses a bit faster.

    • What's the budget, what do you shoot and what have you already got?

Personally, I avoided the superzooms. The basis being that you want a (lens/camera/anything) to do one job well, not many jobs okay-ish.

I'm imagining that you have a DX camera, which means a cropped frame. Now, the beautiful thing about the cropped frame is you can get more zoom for your buck if you buy NON-DX lenses it's a bit confusing to explain why, but if you are looking for telephoto lenses, go with ones designed for full-frame cameras. That way, if currently you have a DX sensor, you get more zoom than you paid for, but the beauty is you future-proof yourself if you buy a full-frame camera.

Sorry, don't have time to check, but I believe this is the video I watched a while back which explains it:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYMhhb5QlO0

Now, having said all the above about superzooms, I love my 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 razor-sharp, feels substantially built and best of all, a non-DX lens making it effectively, on my DX camera, a ~110-450mm! So great for portraits!

The 55-300mm is a DX lens and only slightly less expensive than what I personally consider to be vastly superior and will last you a lot longer in terms of functionality - you can use a DX lens on full-frame, but you get a cropped image, begging the question why you bothered going to full-frame in the first place.

However, one bloke's opinion on gear is not gospel, so do some digging on reviews and such and see if you can come up with a winner!

As for what I (and many, I'm sure) consider the absolute lens collection to have if you robbed bank and could afford it, Nikon has 3 fantastic gold rings F2.8 fixed which cover a range between 14-200mm, dubbed "The Holy Trinity". Oh and a few primes to supplement it, of course…oh and you can't forget a couple of external flashes, remote triggers, softboxes, various camera bags, tripods, monopods…oh and…

[Yes, it goes on and on and on. lol]

      Have fun!

  • Just place an order for the 35mm lens hopefully my invoice states todays purchase date.
    Cheers hmmmmmm
anyone else willing to give me a copy of your lens purchase fom TGG in a pdf file as i wish to claim it on my oversea trip, so far $200 need another $100 to make a claim for next months trip to malaysia, japan and korea.
Even any receipt over $100 from TGG ……

    • Just wondering, do you not need to carry the other item ($100 one) with you?

      • yes i do but it dose not have to be exact as they will not inspect the item matching the receipt.
As long a flash the item that is good enough.

  • Sorry, but which Sony cameras are on sale today?

  • I've just had my first play with my new D3300, the 18-55 lens is good but doesn't zoom enough (I had a big zoom lens on my J1)

These look great prices, but I don't like the hassle of having to carry around and swap lenses. Anyone got any recommendations? I've heard an 18-140 mentioned, is that the typical option?

    THanks!

    • According to youtube 18-140 vs 18-105 reviews, there's not big difference between them. in some pics 18-105 is better than 18-140.
However,18-140 is very handy not that heavy, good reaching and wide enough for travelling.

Still not make a decision between 18-140 and 55-300, there're both at the best price according to OZB record.

BTW I've got prime 35mm 1.8g lens for couple of months, have to say it's brilliant.

      • Do you have the kit lens (18-55)? If so get the 55-300 first. That way you cover 18-300.

Get the 18-105 or 18-140 later on if you want it.

Another thing to consider. 18-105 and 18-140 don't focus as close as 18-55 (your subject has to be farther away) - awkward limitation for a dinner party.

        • yeah got 18-55 already
carry 55-300 is not that easy in reality haha
I'd rather carry a canon powershot sx to get more range and probably lighter than 55-300mm.

        • @GavinS:

I've done direct comparison between SX50HS and Nikon D90 with 70-300VR at Featherdale (local wildlife recreation park). Nikon wins, big time. All but 2 shots were better on the D90 with the lens.

@syousef: Thanks mate your pics are more than any word.
I'd pass the powershot and order the 55-300mm nikkor.

    • The 55-300mm listed here, and the 55-200mm f4-5.6 Nikkon VR (e.g. https://www.camerasky.com.au/nikon-af-s-dx-vr-zoom-nikkor-55…) are considered great value, walk-around lenses.

I use the 55-200mm. I find it a great compromise - enough zoom for most things, but small and light enough.

You can certainly get better zoom lenses, but both of these are a great place to start, particularly for your first DSLR ;-)

      • you don't find the 55mm to be too close when you're out and about?

I'm going to buy the wireless adapter, that looks useful. I'll keep researching about the lenses, i still don't know what much of it means! thanks for your help

    • BTW it's worth looking up Youtube videos on how to change lenses. It takes a bit of practice, but it's not hard to learn (and being able to change glass makes your camera a lot more flexible!).

    • tl;dr Physically longer lens + wider focal length + inbuilt flash = flash shadow.

18-140 and all those with extra reach have one issue you should be aware of. If you use the inbuilt popup flash as your primary light and zoom out towards 18mm you'll get a flash shadow bottom middle of the screen. I use an 18-70 on my Nikons and this issue is almost non-existant. I have the 18-135 STM on Canon and it's quite noticable.

Easiest way around that if you have one of these lenses it to add an external flash to the hotshoe. Gets above the flash and doesn't cast a shadow. But adds bulk and cost to the camera setup.

Another thing to consider. 18-105 and 18-140 don't focus as close as 18-55 (your subject has to be farther away) - awkward limitation for a dinner party.

  • Actually there's another good price lens to be considered : sigma 18-250mm pretty good size and not bad quality and made in japan.
    Here's the link: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sigma-4883954-18-250mm-f3-5-6-3-M…

    • Be careful with 3rd party lenses, especially Sigma. A new camera comes out and the lens won't work without it unless you get the lens rechipped (older lenses) or the firmware upgraded. Newer higher priced Sigma lenses come with a dock for flashing new firmware or you can get it as an option. Older lenses have to be sent in to Sigma for service. Typically there's only one service center in Australia for the 3rd party manufacturers…though sometimes they have walk in offices in some of the other capital cities. Real pain.

  • Great bargain… Unfortunately, the local click n collect store is sold out. Can't wait for the delivery, going overseas…

    • Thats no good, i received a confirmation call from TGG after 4 hours of placing the order. 3-5 days i'm guessing
May i ask your SLR equipment for your travel? Im planning to take D3300 18-55mm kit lens, 35mm len, 3x64g sd card, spare battery.

      • +1

I have an ageing D5000 with 18-55mm & 55-200mm kit lenses. I'd have gone for a 50mm lens (which would behave like a 75mm) just for future upgradability. But for best street and low light photography using your gear, think your choice of 35mm prime lens is great.

      • Not OP, but went to England last year. I actually just took this lens and a 3200. As for other kit, I had a BlackRapid strap, a 32GB memory card, spare battery + the charger and a nice, discreet camerabag to tote it all around in - the "Stealth Reporter Pro" if memory serves.

I was shooting in RAW, so massive filesize and never even got close to filling the 32GB card.

Went with just the 35mm as heavy gear sucks to carry around all the time, but there was maybe 2 occasions where I wish I had a wider lens. With that said, however, a prime really makes you think about your shot and I feel, you end up with photos you feel prouder of.

I've even used the 35mm only for a couple of professional jobs and the results were fantastic!

  • Ordered. Thanks.

It didn't allow me to search for local stores to pick and collect. The error message given was not right. I hope the local stores have run out of stock. But instead of showing that message it just stop you from searching for the store and ask you to search later.

Now need to remember to apply for cashback.

  • +1

Bing Lee price is back at $235 (+ $5 postage) and cheaper for the Nikon 35mm 1.8 (will be 145.95 - include 20%, pickup and 3% cashback and $35 Nikon cashback)

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Nikon-AF-S-DX-NIKKOR-35mm-f-1-8G-…

    • and back to $299 again.
GoodGuys is out of stock as well.

      • +1

I suspected that - otherwise, I would have done a new post on that ;)

  • Can we claim for a 29th Nov purchase in a couple of days from now?

    • That shouldn't be a problem, just don't leave it for months. I bought my camera on the last day of their last cash back promo and it took a day or two formme to claim the cash back and I had no problems getting it.

  • Does anyone know the date by which you must apply for the cashback by? I wont have the serial number until I get my lens in two weeks time

  • Bit the bullet on the 30mm, according to ebay they've only got 6 left.

    • Shows 7 available now. So they are adding stock, but not processing my pickup order. Hope the invoice date would not cause problem at cashback.

      • Turns out that they were adding virtual stock. I got a call from my local GG yesterday telling me that they don't have any in stock and will have to order it from the manufacturer.

        • Sounds same as last christmas LG G3 deal at TGG, ebay promotion time. Price was too good, but cancelled after waiting weeks.

        • I got the same call. They contacted Nikon who don't have stock either. They tell me Nikon are expecting stock on 11 January. Bloody ridiculous. I cancelled. After I got the call from TGG, I checked eBay and the listing was still there showing stock. That gets my goat up.

    Thanks OP.

Picked up the 55-300 together with some Wahl hairclippers to get me over the $300 mark for TRS scheme. Already have the 35 so couldn't justify getting the 50 at this time.

  • Ordered for shipping yesterday afternoon (2 PM). Have not got any invoice yet, but TGG said they assigned the job to local TGG store. A bit worried now if their invoice will say the purchase date as 28th, otherwise cannot get the cashback :(

  • does this comes with HB-46 bayonet plastic hood?

  • +1

Don't forget that for the lenses, as well as those of you who jumped on the D3300 deal, go to my Nikon life to grab a second year warranty coverage free for your new lens or camera

  • Ijust paid 35mm 1.8g on TGG ebay store for my dad, which was the last one.
Hopefully the invoice date is today to get solid cashback.

  • Hey guys, sorry for the noob question; do these prime lens (35 and 50mm) bolt on to a D40 please?

    • Don't worry, checked on Nikon website, it sure does.

  • +3

Umm. I can't find the lenses on the cashback website any more.

Nooooo! Does that mean you had to purchase AND claim between 26-29 nov?

EDIT: The 35 and 50mm are no longer listed on the page https://mynikonlife.com.au/cash-back/ but if you click one of the other lenses you can then select the right model.

    • You've had your lens delivered already?

      • Yep came yesterday morning from Melbourne to Sydney via courier.

        • That's great. Hope I get mine today…

        • @quarrymaster:
Did you get tracking with Couriers Please (or similiar)? Should say 'on board with driver' by now if it's due for delivery today.
Unsurprisingly we were home all morning and even with a courier still got a slip to pickup from the local newsagent. Bizarre… but all good in the end, the lens is delectable

        • @Hoju:

Haven't got any updates at all yet…

        • @quarrymaster:

Ah damn. Hope they're still in stock. Mine was dispatched and email received within a few hours of ordering on Saturday.

        • @Hoju:

          Well, I've got an invoice…

    • Thanks OP, almost freaked out when the lenses was no longer on the cash back page.

  • Just lodged my $35 cash back yay,

  • Yep got my cashback approved already, plus the cash rewards too :) Bargain!

  • I bought 50mm lens and C&C was not available so I selected to get delivered from local store. I am still waiting for the delivery.
However today I checked the cashback link from Nikon and it's gone. When was that finished? I can only see 3 lenses on that cashback page now and 50mm one is not there.
How can I get the cashback now?

PS: Oops didn't read the end of the thread. It's been addressed. There is a way to get to the page. But TGG said it will take 2 weeks to deliver the lense to me as they have to reorder as they ranout of stock even though they accepted my order and charged me. I said ok. But would this still be available by the time I get my lense delivered? Is there any dead line to submit the cashback ?

    • I called the TGG Moorabbin store and they checked with Nikon and said the delivery will not happen until 1st January now. After checking with Nikon TGG staff member said that I can still apply for the cashback with the invoice they emailed to me. However the web form does not allow me to submit it without a SN#. Therefore I have to wait for the delivery.
Hope the cahsback will still be open by the time I received the item.

      • Nikon only usually allow a limited time to submit for cashback, for example see FAQ's for DSLR cashback "You have 30 days from your date of purchase to claim a reward" - https://promotions.mynikonlife.com.au/DslrCashback/FAQ

They wouldn't email me an invoice, I asked my local store.

I too am waiting… this is the third time TGG have taken an order for something supposedly in stock, only to find out I have to wait for it to come in. I bought my wife a camera 'in stock' from there last year, and its late arrival missed her birthday, so I expected it this time, but its not good enough to wait until post-Christmas, I gave neutral feedback last time, this time its being upgraded to negative feedback - third time is too many.

        • Even if you have an invoice you need to have a Serial Number form the actual product to submit the cashback.

When they called me couple days after my order TGG said they will have the stock in less than 2 weeks and can deliver to me quick. So I thought it's still well before Christmas. However yesterday after talking to Nikon TGG person said it won't be delivered until early Jan.

  • Hi Guys

So i bought this on the 28th and paypal went through that day itself, TGG sent an auto email on the 29th however the lens only arrived today with invoice date of 8/12. Will the cashback still apply? Ive submitted a claim using my paypal invoice and the web docket number from TGG invoice but worried im gonna get denied :\

    • Didn't the auto email have an invoice? Mine did from them, had the day of PayPal payment on jt

      • unfortunately not

the first email on the 29th Nov just said Order XXXXXXX has been allocated to a store for processing - but it did list my paypal transaction number
the second email arrived on 1 Dec with the duplicate invoice stating 1 Dec
item arrived on the 9th with invoice saying 8th

        im screwed arent i?

        • im screwed arent i?

I hope we're gonna be ok. The redeem terminology refers to the date of purchase and asks for a receipt, not invoice. As far as I'm concerned, The Good Guys took my money on the 29th, that's my date of purchase. I have the sales order with the full amount and description of the lens. The serial number is on neither this sales order nor invoice, so I would argue/strongly suggest Nikon honours this.

        • @quarrymaster: I agree - that's when my money was debited, so there's 'proof of purchase' on that day. We can all group together to submit a claim for it if we get rejected. There is power in numbers.

        • @MrFrugalSmith:

Worth a try. TBH Nikon, a three day promo? WTF? They should honour the purchase date - i.e. day money was collected in full for the transaction.

      • Didn't the auto email have an invoice? Mine did from them, had the day of PayPal payment on jt

The e-mail mentioned "invoice", but the PDF didn't.

        • Didn't get an invoice straight away then the TGG staff lady rang on the 1st and said the other lens was on back order [i ordered 2] and i had to ask for the invoice and i even mentioned the cashback and paypal went thru on the 28th so she sent that duplicate invoice but the date was the 1st!!

  • Still haven't got my item. Stock level for 50mm prime at TGG nationally is apparently "negative 4". So I have lucked out as one of the last 4 still waiting to receive their lens. Anyone else still waiting?

  • GOOD NEWS EVERYONE /Farnsworth

    Paypal invoice worked!!

Your claim has been approved for a cashback, please allow up to 28 days for the funds to appear in your nominated account.

    • My Sales Order was also fine. Claim approved as well. Thanks, OP. Thanks, Hoju.
