Free Wuvo Spot (Bluetooth Key/Phone Locator)

143

Stumbled across this today. Apparently they're willing to ship you a free Wuvo Spot (Bluetooth locator tag for keys etc). They also claim free shipping.

I've had a bit of a browse through the site and can't find too many more details, but the confirmation page states "something exciting" will happen on Dec 1.

Edit: I found this blog post which states the shipping is not free, but the FB ad I clicked through definitely claimed free shipping. I guess we'll see on Dec 1.

Well, they've promised never to spam me. That's good enough for me I'm in!!!

Well, they can't seem to give a clear direction on cost, blog says free, but you need to pay for postage.
Website sign up says free Spot & postage.
Once signed up you get this message:
    Awesome. You're on the list.
We've got something brewing on December 1. Keep an eye on your inbox then so we can send you the mechanics on how you can get a Spot for just $1.
The app app appears to be free (for Android at least) will they have one for people with win8/10 tablets & phones?

Come Dec. 1 I guess we'll know which options they offer.

  • I still don't see anything happening and we are in December now

  • shipping is free but they are charging us$1 for the spot via an indogogo campaign….

  • I just got the email and paid the $1 US. Early bird spots are running out fast. Estimated shipping is Feb 2016.

    • Yep same for me. Still a great deal, I've signed up.

I paid the $1 US to Indiegogo as well and I've just received an email stating that it has been refunded. No reason given and it appears they are still taking contributions

      • sounds like this may have been just a way to get some free exposure and were never actually going to honour it.

tho ive not heard anything yet, ill let people know if this changes.

have you tried contacting them and/or making (public) comments about it on their pages?

        edit: well look at that…..

Indiegogo.com has just sent you a full refund of $1.00 USD for your purchase.

  • I got refunded with no explanation. Emailed two addresses with no reply yet. What a bunch of tools…this thing is worth 5 bucks tops.

Yeah, disgusting behaviour by Wuvo. They got exposure through 'free $1 spot' and then cancelled them all after they got popular. Further, the promised '1 update per week' on indiegogo never happened and their social media has been quiet for a month. This company is so dodgy.

  • Yep looks to be a scam. Sorry guys. Oh well as long we get the dollar back.

  • Still no response from Wuvo. I think complaint to Indiegogo is in order.

Lodged 'violation of policy' report ticket with Indiegogo…

In December last year the Wuvo Spot project advertised a CRAZY EARLY BIRD SPECIAL offering a Wuvo Spot for $1 with free shipping. I signed up with pledge ID xxxxxxx.
I received an email on 14 Jan saying I would be refunded with no explanation of why. I have sent them two emails asking why with no response.
A quick search on the internet indicates that all of these $1 pledges were refunded.
I believe that this was simply a tactic by Wuvo Spot to get free marketing exposure to drive sales of their other offers with no intention to fulfil the $1 offer. This is totally unethical and fraudulent behaviour commonly known as a bait and switch.
I strongly suggest that the Wuvo Spot campaign and funding through Indiegogo be cancelled due to this inappropriate behaviour.
Copy of email (2 Dec 2015) regarding the $1 offer below…

      Hi there,
We've just launched our campaign on Indiegogo and, as one of our loyal subscribers, we're giving you early access to our CRAZY EARLY BIRDS SPECIAL where you can claim the Wuvo Spot for $1 and with free shipping worldwide! We only have a limited supply of Wuvo Spots to be sold at this price, so make haste while the offer lasts.
You can also get up to 20 FREE Wuvo Spots simply by referring your friends to our campaign!
Get it here while the offer is still hot!
      Stay awesome,
      The Wuvo Team

    • Ditto. Also lodged a violation of policy report.

      Hi,

Wuvo spot had a $1 early bird for 100 limited people and made a big deal about it in the weeks and even months leading up to their campaign opening.

Now that the campaign is coming to a close,my early bird backing was refunded with zero notice, and I never received any notice for this happening in my inbox.

This is clearly bait and switch to garner attention (their original pre-campaign marketing was actually a mystery free device) which is not only in bad faith but illegal. I would like to at least have my backing restored, if not see the Wuvo team reprimanded for their poor practices.

      Regards,
      <Name>

      =======================

Unfortunately I doubt Indiegogo will be doing anything seeing as it's a campaign that will be on track to deliver its products (but clearly not their promises), and they're getting a cut of the profits too.

If anyone from Indiegogo is also on this thread, here's a pointer to you (or anyone who you would pass the message onto) - campaign managers need to provide some sort of proof (or automatically link to the messages of refund-ees) when processing this kind of request. It seems that the platform is flawed if people running a campaign can willy nilly refund backers without a formalised process in place that's not a free-for-all.

    • I emailed wuvo yesterday asking for an explanation of the refund. Given it is still Sunday in the US I'll give them until tomorrow night to respond before I lodge a violation of policy.

  • Received an email from them

    How have you been?

I'm so sorry for taking so long to write back. My inbox is very full at the moment and the emails are remarkably overwhelming. We are doing our best efforts to respond to all messages in a timely fashion.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

This company is beyond dodgy. I can't believe they still haven't publicly explained on the indiegogo page their reasons for refunding the early bird pledges.

    • so… they sent you an email reply…. with absolutely no info in it? :|

      speechless

      • Received another email from them:

        To: Me

        Hi Joshua,

The $1 perk was created with the help of a sponsor covering all the expenses up (both shipping fees and the cost of the Spot). Unfortunately, that certain sponsor backed-out and we won't be able to cover the shipping expenses by ourselves, considering that we're basically just giving away the Spots and we're just a small start-up.

We understand your frustration about this and as a goodwill gesture, we are willing to give you a discount coupon if you still want to try the Spot.

This is a very tough time for us but we're definitely patching things up. Your patience is highly appreciated.

They've deleted the questions from the indiegogo page asking about the reasons for cancelling the $1 pledge and they still haven't publically put anything up. It's almost like they're worried that the normal backers (not early bird) might withdraw their pledge if they found out how dodgy this company is…

They're gonna fail at patching things up if they're not going to be honest and upfront with their backers. I hope indiegogo withdraws all their funds but i doubt that's going to happen now.

        • "the help of a sponsor" huh? what a load of bullshit. that is the worst buck passing excuse ive seen in a long time.

they got there free advertising, now they arent coughing up what they promised, screw the dodgy pricks.
