      http://m.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_m5-reviews-7464.php

      • +1

the sweep panaroma stitching looks horrid!

the 13mp selfie cam will entice those vain instagrammers though ><

      • Thanks, I have mentioned it in post :)

      • We just discovered a new problem with the phone: it ain't $319

    • +1

      Here we go:

      G4 vs M5

5.5" 2560x1440 Excellent IPS Display vs 5" 1920x1080 Good IPS Display
      Snapdragon 808 SoC (4xA53 + 2xA57 + Adreno 418) vs Helio X10 SoC (8xA53 + PowerVR G6200)
      3GB LPPDR3 RAM vs 3GB LPPDR3 RAM
Kickass 16MP 4K OIS Rear Cam vs Problematic 21.5MP 4K Rear Cam
8MP Front Cam vs 13MP Front Cam

      • +10

        You forgot one thing:
        $550 vs $319

        (G4’s not on sale atm)

      • Arguable that the SD808 is "better" than the Helio X10.

        • No… It really isn't…

        • @deanylev:
          Antutu v5: SD 808 (51,110) vs X10 (50,958).
          Geekbench single core: SD 808 (1022) vs X10 (936).

          3D Mark Ice Storm Unlimited 720p: SD 808 (12,451) vs X10 (17,394).

        • +1

@bchliu: Man it isn't about benchmarks. The X10 has major issues, hiccups in general performance, and plays games pretty awfully.

Also Mediatek don't release source code, so no custom ROMs.

  • How come the M4 and the C4 for that matter is more expensive?

    • probably down to a promo price(as per this bargain) and Helio SoC

  • +1

Wow. I just got mine used for $400 after waiting months for release. Absolute bargain. Typig on it now. Fair share of bugs though.

    • +2

      what sort of bugs ?

      • +43

        Apparently typig bugs.

  • +6

You can combine this with 10% Extra Value on DSE GCs deal @ Coles and can save another $31.90, which would bring it down to $287.10

You can also save another $10 with Dick Smith Mates Rates Rewards Program, only if you are buying in-store an then pay with discounted gift cards from Coles.

Thank you to OP for sharing the catalogue/deal with us though.

  • Similar issues mentioned on the below forum as well. May be that explains why it is so cheap compare to M4 Acqua.

If anyone using this phone, please share your experience.

  • +1

That's good specs and very good price for what it is. Basically a cut down Z5 / Z5C with a less expensive processor (but no less powerful) for half the price. Got my vote considering I love my new Z5C. This price is very much down to Chinese Android prices and gives them a run for their money compared to traditional Chinese Android players like One Plus, Xiaomi Oppo etc.

  • M5 vs moto g 3rd gen for a non-techy person (my wife)?

    • I prefer the M5, But given all the reports of camera shutter lag and random power offs, the motorola may be a better way to go

    • I prefer Moto G 3rd Gen. It will get updates faster and its a Qualcomm chip. M5 has Mediatek Helio chip, while its powerful Mediatek is terrible releasing their sources.

      • +3

Person who is buying this phone is non-techy so would not bother with mediatek releases source or not.

        • Yes that's true but I am sure they want timely updates to 6.0 which you wont get with the Sony because of Mediatek.

        • I'm starting to feel that os updates are overrated, going from lollipop to marshmallow wasn't a huge difference on my nexus. The s410 is a pretty slow chip to have in $300+ phone.

  • Is this a dual sim variant?

    • I want to know too, anyone?

      • Given the price I am guessing they decided to dump the single sim stock in Australia, but I am still hopeful it is dual sim.

  • Wow that is nearly half price!!!!! Retails for $600. This will sell out instantly

    • Depends if this is the dual sim model, I am not sure what the single sim usually sells for but it wont be the $548 the dual sim one has been. Hopefully Sony have a fix for the shutter lag and power off issues others are reporting.

So reported issues on top of the reported issues of phantom touch issue which ruins any xperia device to start with. Don't worry the phantom touch issue has only been around for 4 generations now so you can be assured that Sony won't rectify it.

Give your money to another mobile maker or regret buying a Sony Mobile device.

    You have been warned.

    • -1

      Phantom Touch - wassat?
      Sounds spooky to me

      • Never experienced personally on any of my xperias but it has always been something I have seen reported. I love the design of the xperia Z and M series, and I have had quite a few of them, but they would be one of the buggiest line of phones I've ever had with random issues on every one I have owned….but I am a sucker for punishment and if this is the dual sim version I will buy it.

    • +3

I had one xperia Z and two Z2 phones and never had this issue and i'll happily buy another xperia device without hesitation.

    • Any Xperia device? I've had my Z5 Compact for a month now and have had no phantom touch issues whatsoever.

I love it to bits and have also successfully tested the waterproofing.

I'm also in absolute audio heaven after getting the MDR-1ABT headphones. The sound quality I'm getting via Bluetooth is astonishing. Try some well recorded / mastered hi-res classical if you want to test them, since rock/pop just won't do them justice. The sound is better than 99% of wired headphones out there, thanks to Sony's new LDAC codec - one of the most underrated features of the current Xperia devices. I've even started a hi-res audio library - something I never had an interest in before. I hear Sony is going to licence out LDAC to other manufacturers - hope it gets picked up.

    • I've also had an Xperia Z for 2 years, and a Z2 with no phantom issues. Quite rare and Sony will replace your phone.

  • I ended up buying the M4 Aqua from good guys ebay for $288.
Still a great deal for the M5 model

    • was the Good Guys still the 8gb models?

      • Yes it was.

  • VideoPro have the M5 for $548 and they just told me on live chat that theres is not dual sim, so I am betting this one is single sim as well…oh well

  • +1

Does anyone think maybe they messed up the catalogue and the M4 is supposed to be $319 and the M5 $479? (The M4 has never been this high before especially the 8GB model)

  • +1

I sent them a message on FB asking if it was dual sim and they replied:

"Our team have advised there is a print error in the catalogue and we have prepared an apology for it. The prices for each item is incorrect. The M4 is $319 & M5 is $479. Thanks Amanda #DSHelp"

Maybe if you're quick you can get videopro to match it.

  • It is increasingly looking like a catalogue error

  • Can anyone let me know how this compares to the first Xperia Z.

My wifes Xperia Z died, so she bought a cheap Android for $150 which sucks. So she needs something which will work as well as the Xperia Z does.

I've seen one page comparing the M5 to the Z2 and it all looks very comparible other than not having as much Wifi components - is this a significant thing? Will be using wifi a lot.

    http://gadgets.ndtv.com/sony-xperia-m5-2835-vs-sony-xperia-z…

    • Given it looks like the M5 is actually $479 I would be looking for stock of the Z2 at DSE and JB who both have had the Z2 at $488 in the last few months. You may have to negotiate if it isn't advertised at that price at the moment, but I would imagine their buy price allows this sort of price.

    • i am thinking the same, wifes Z is getting old, still works fine but she is a little tired of the poor photos (hers is the white phone and it always seems a little washed out in photos compared to the black version).
i was think this M5 would be good, also the Oppo R7plus seemed nice but she said its too big (and doesnt have NFC which she uses often)

      • My wife won't go to a lesser known brand after having recently bought a low cost Huawei which apparently is pretty unusable. It looks great, nice size, slim etc - looks like a top range phone but usability is bad. That's why she wants to stick with Sony or Samsung.

        • what was it, I was looking at some and they look good. glad to know theres a reason they are cheap.

        • @PVA: I don't know the model - $150 ish for a 5.0" or maybe 5.5"

I think the problem is that it has very low RAM and ROM - I think it's 2GB built in storage or something which basically means she can't install 3 billion apps and it's mega slow in loading them up.

        • @davedrastic:

LG G2 is $134 in DSE clearance. Could do worse for the $$

        • @Steptoe: Ooh that's a nice one

  • Wife has had a Xperia M5 Dual-SIM since early October. It's been sent back under warranty due the sudden power-off and wont turn back on without being connected to a power source issue http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?s=587f0c5902d7c…

It was extremely annoying and inconvenient. It would unexpectedly power-off several times a day with plenty of battery left and wouldn't come back to life until it was connected to a charger, as if the battery was flat.

From other reports in the link above, the problem has returned/persisted even after the phone was replaced/repaired.

Be weary of this model. It might be better to pay the extra for a Z5. It's a shame since the M5 is a really nice size, weight and spec. If it didn't have this power-off problem, which makes it almost unusable, we would have been very happy with it. Maybe carry a portable battery bank around in your pocket with you if you decide to get one :) every ozbargainer probably has a Xiaomi one from Mushtato or banggood by now.

    • did you buy Australian stock, model num or did you buy grey import?

      • I got the same problem, au stock. Waiting for warranty claim.hope it helps.

        • Thanks Bud, that sucks! hope you get it sorted

  • +1

    Seriously? Another price error?

    • To be honest I thought it might be, the price was too cheap compared to even grey imports

    • It's available in store now with the $479.
      but HTC M8 is just $499 …

  • +1

If anyone has the dick smith catalogue @ home the $319 price is still in it so try get sony store to price match lol

  • +2

    I upgraded from a moto g to m5. Thoughts:
Much better spec. Remember, full HD vs HD (half). Software us newer and bit smoother in moto. A few bugs in my m5. The power off happened once. No bother as there are 2 workarounds. Remember there is an upcoming software update this month apparently , so presumably bugs will be fixed. Overall, m5 is the best value phone ive ever seen, even at $479 (for oz stock). My bets are it won't be dual sim ver - that's called m5 dual.

    • Yeah VideoPro confirmed to me that their M5 is only single sim, their price is $548 which IMO is jsut too expensive for the single sim, I am always hesitant to grey import sony phones, I like having ACL to fight over warranty and my run with sony's has always had issues with the phones…but I still love the design lol

  • Went to my local DS store today to ask for any stock, cool guy there said 2 black units would arrive in couple hours. I asked him if I'm able to grab one today with the $319 deal but no I couldn't. However he said that I can come in tomorrow and get one for this price :)

All these happened before the price change, well.

Why would anyone want thismobile when its plagued with major problems.

    • Can you post this question on Sony' s page?

  • Has anyone seen stock of this at dicksmith stores? It's not on their website and no stores I've been to have had stock :(

  • Good question. After a lot of reading around I have some advice about buying this phone: the first batch (which I am typing on now) were a complete dud. Too many faults to list. These are the ones manufactured before week 40 2015, I am told. Just checked mine and mnfd is week 37. It appears to be a mainboard problem . anyone found the dual sim for sale in Australia?

    • I dont believe the dual sim is carried by anyone in australia. I had thought the video pro one for $548 was dual sim but they confirmed its only single sim. Vodafone also confirmed theirs is only single sim. I think the only option for dual sim is to grey import.

  • Is this phone available anywhere in oz?

    • Video pro have it at $548 in black or white. Vodafone have it at $599 in white only. Only single sim for the AU stock, if you want dual sim you'll have to grey import

  • Did dick Smith ever release this?

    • they only received a small amount of stock. If you really want it from dick smith you can message them on facebook and they will tell you which stores have stock.

    • It came into stock at most stores on the 15th of December

  • I bought this phone. Managed to do a customer order for it while the catalogue sale was on and got it for $319 :)

I will note that the packaging lists it as Rev 2. I haven't had any off the random freezing issues others had probably because this is the newer revision.
