Yep, of course it does. If they actually included beer they'd increase their online sales by a rather large % for sure.
Yeah. They had the nerve to tell me that 12x 750ml bottles of wine (including sparkling wine which of course is in even thicker glass) weighs more than 24x330ml bottles and even 24x CANS of beer. Can you believe it?
Well they are correct in saying that.
12 x 750ml is 9 litres (9 kilos).
24 x 330mL is 7.9 litres (7.9 kilos).Excluding packaging of course.
However, if that's the case, it would be cheaper to deliver beer.
Ah sorry, I meant the exact opposite. They told me the beer weighed more than the wine which was why they excluded it from free shipping offers. Just utter nonsense. Plain lies.
@Mobe1969: A six pack of Wine weighs about 7kg, 12 pack 14-15kg and a carton of beer (Dry Dock for an example) is 13.5kg. Beers with thinner glass (ie. Corona) will weigh less (12kg from memory) and sparkling wine/champagne will weigh more as it has thicker glass (since it's pressurised) and a carton of bottle brewed beer such as Coopers will weigh more due to thicker glass as well (14.7kg) ….
Personally, working in the liquor industry, I think the beer exclusion might be from the fact beer cartons have a higher risk of being damaged in transit, so the insurance is probably higher. Almost all wines have cardboard dividers between bottles in the cartons, where as most beers don't have any dividers between bottles to prevent them from banging directly into each other in transit. For example, most of the major Australian beers only have cardboard around six packs in the carton, not in between each bottle.
Very good point on the packaging quality. I don't agree on the weight though. You are comparing half a carton with a carton. 4.5l of wine vs 7.9l of beer. Sure they sell cartons of 6, but most cartons of wine I buy are 12s.

Or hey, how about allowing click and collect on all the sXXt you can buy online that you can't buy in store? So it just gets sent to stores in normal liquor loads. The stuff that really sxxts me beyond belief is that most of the beers I get from DM I can't frigging get them in store, so have to pay for postage. I tried even seeing if they could order them in for me instore, and they just stare dully.
So when they have free shipping on everything except beer it is like "oh wow, instead of me going to the store and getting it now, I can wait a week and have them ship it to me free! Wow, how awesome. Oh dear I got carded, so now I gotta go up the post office to collect it"
@Mobe1969: You'd be surprised how many wineries provide stock in six packs (in part to reduce that carton size/weight to lower their shipping costs and to make it easier for the customer)… either way it's in there for comparisons sake between wine cartons, just like the Corona/Coopers example I provided for beers ;)
