  • I have had the multi trip policy with these guys for a few years and find them quit good, only took a while on one of my claims but policy price is good.

    • So they're prety fair on allowing claims (legit of course) and not one of those insuranc ecompanies that seem great/cheap and affordable until you actually try to mak ea claim?

      • I claimed 3 times over 4 years without problems.

        • What sort of claims/issues? Mind if i ask the context to gauge how difficult or pricey the claims were? Thanks.

        • @SaberX:
One claim was about $160 for some treatment i had for bad stomach bug in hospital in Philippines and another claim was for replacement of a laptop screen accidentally broken $370 i think. I paid extra so nil excess.

  • Anyone used it for rewards points redemptions?

  • Thanks, looks good!

  • I can't seem to use that code anywhere for an annual multi-trip. The price seemed attractive even without it.

      its working for me

      • Please let me know where you have the opportunity to insert the coupon code?

  • Do these guys do insurance for one way trips?

    • think it has to be a return trip

  • What's major difference between this and one you get when you booked by credit card…

    • Read CC insurance T&Cs carefully. To be covered, you usually have to meet all these criteria eg flights must cost greater than $1k etc etc I have never been able to meet the criteria myself and have always paid extra for travel insurance.

    • Excess are also typically a lot bigger.

  • vr, cc covers are all different, you need to check the specific PDS for your card and see if it suits your requirements. Some cards require different amounts to be spent on the trip on the card to be activated. Whichever way you go, read the Pds carefully.

Suggest any clarifications be sought on line to get replies in writing.

  • I tend to get annual domestic insurance with these guys and keep renewing. Peace of mind. I think they cover hire car insurance as part of the annual multi trip too from memory?

is it cheaper than standard travelinsurancedirect.com?

for me, Aus Post with discount $41, TID $48

    • +2

TID has better cover last time I looked. TID will pay out in the event of a delay caused by the transport provider, auspost will not. other small details i found TID to be better as well.. comparing insurance is such a pain.

      • The PDS for both on Travel delay looks very similar - can't see any exclusion on the AP section (section 9, page 23).

Are you aware of any other differences in cover? I'm thinking of switching from TID to this one and the PDS's for each look pretty similar.

TID want $664 for zero excess annual cover (that's with a 5% coupon). AP are quoting $401 with zero excess and using this 20% off.

        • Delayed Luggage Allowance AP(Up to $375 if delay is > 24hrs) vs. TID (Up to $250 if delay is > 12hrs)

I'm trying to buy a single trip policy but can't find the promo code box. Please help

    • Same issue, in the end I just called them up and did it over the phone. 5 mins end to end (and they're open Sunday's).

  • +1

Are they any good with claims?
Have always been using TID but getting expensive

  • Im still finding TID cheaper by roughly $15 for single policy for a trip to asia/pacific.. perhaps some countries Austpost cheaper…

  • WTF. Aus post wants $366 for skiing overseas (basic cover) but Medibank only wants $161 from me

  • I am going for a domestic road trip, approximately 30 days however I am taking:

    Camera with accessories - $5500
    Road Bike - $1500
    Macbook Air - $1400

    Australia Post
    Camera + Video Camera - $500
    Laptop - $500
    Mobile Phone - $500
    Other Items - $500

Adding extra cover goes up very quickly.

    TID says
"Cameras, Digital Cameras, and Video Cameras are automatically covered up to $4,000 per item."

    But on another page says
"If you are planning to travel with cameras, we understand you want to protect them. Travel Insurance Direct covers cameras and lenses combined up to a total value of $4,000 if it is lost, stolen or damaged while you are overseas."

And the in the PSD is says an 'item' is "a camera, lenses (attached or not), tripod and accessories;"

The biggest worry of mine would be my car being broken in to while out hiking, camping, or just anywhere in general. Turns out nothing is covered in that instance:
Items are not covered it left… "unsupervised in a motor vehicle at any time;"

Can anyone recommend any insurance that would be applicable for a road trip?

    • Deleted, bad info - sorry.

      • Doesn't seem all that bad @gadgetguy.

From a brief read of RACQ renters insurance I can claim 'Items away from home'. The PDS doesn't seem to specify 'how' these things must not be stolen and the excess is $300.

Although they then say "Up to 20% of the contents sum insured for each claim" which kills it.

If anyone knows of a way to insure items while on a road trip I'd love to hear it!

    • I used to see cover for items left in car if locked in the boot. It may be quicker for you to ring around a few places and ask, and then if one says 'yes will cover', get the PDS and email them to get it in writing.

Check Choice Mag too as they have covered travel insurance a couple of times in the past 12 months, to get general advice and inspiration.

Another option to check is that AMEX Velocity cc has domestic Aus travel cover. Check what you have to do to qualify for cover on that card. If you don't have the card and earn 65K, there is a current promo of sign up and get a bonus of 80K Velocity points. (I can give you a code for that if required).

  • so the annual policy starts from the day you buy it for the next 12 months ?

its only 140 bucks … does it cover every country ?

  • Im getting a 'General Error'

  • +1

Thanks OP, was about to start looking for TI for a trip next year.

I compared it to AAMI who I used on my last trip. AP was $163.20, AAMI was $137.82. However the AP conditions leave AAMI's for dead.

    Cheers.

  • Good Deal!

I'm looking for a policy for a NON-Australian travelling overseas though.

Besides imglobal.com, does anyone have any recommendations?

    • I could be wrong, but I didn't think it was relevant whether you are Australian or non-Australian? i.e. you should be able to take out travel insurance from an Australian insurer regardless of your citizenship status. Can you find a reference in the Aust Post PDS which excludes coverage of non-citizens?

IM Global looks more like a medical/health insurance plan outside of your home country. I didn't look into the PDS in detail or get a quote but I would think you're better off with typical travel insurance which covers medical as well as other travel-related mishaps.

  • $120.80 (with 20% discount) comprehensive for a month long trip for two young twenty-something year olds. Am I seeing right!? It's usually $100+ pp!

  • Have completed a fair bit of research this morning comparing Aus Post with 1 Cover (our usual insurer) and TID. Even with the discount for us (2 adults and 2 kids) the single trip option (even with the discount) was more expensive but their multi-trip package is cheaper than their single trip which is not the case with 1 cover - so this is a good deal. However the rate of cover is better with 1 Cover than the other 2 products in most cases. For example:

Credit Card Fraud & Replacement: $10K (1cover), $2K (TID) and $5K (Aus Post)
    Luggage & Personal Effects: $30K (1cover), $24K (TID) and $7,500 (Aus Post)
    Accidental Death: 1 Cover = $50K (1cover), other 2 are $25K
Permanent Disability: $50K (1cover), $12.5K (TID) and $25K (Aus Post)

Have had to claim with 1 cover once before (car rental access) and they were excellent to deal with.

  • So it looks like to sum up the comments above a single return trip through to asia (say malaysia/thailand - two countries for me next year) is cheaper through TID than aus post? It also seems like TID covers slightly better??

It seems that TID doesn't cover snow sports? Can anyone confirm with good assurance a decently priced insurance company that would cover you going to say Japan for snowboarding? I wouldn't be doing off piste and back country stuff, just going up their chairlifts and down the mountain. Obviously wouldn't set out to do something stupid but want to be covered if your just trying to snowboard or do some harder moves and fate befalls you.

  • it seem they increase the price. my previous online quote (family of 2A and 3C) for an AU travel cost only around $70 with code two days ago. Check just now and its $120?
TID and Woolies are much cheaper at $75
