Telstra prepaid kits are probably better, with them often being available for $15 for the $30 packs. Sometimes even for $10 (starting tomorrow at Woolworths, for example).
The $30 can be used to pay for apps etc.

    • +1

How does that all work again ?

Do I need to be a Telstra customer ?

I am with Amaysim using an Android phone (LGG3) - Does this matter ?

      • +1

Ok, i've not done this myself, but I think it works by buying the telstra prepaid sim with credit (which illumination is saying is frequently on sale), and using that prepaid credit to buy apps/whatever on the playstore. When the little confirmation window pops up on the playstore after clicking buy, there's a little drop down for payment method and there's an option to pay with your balance or something.
I think the annoying thing about this is that you'll have to reinsert that sim card anytime you want to buy anything.

        • +2

I use an old phone that was lying around and just leave the sim card inserted and use the same email logon on both device to access Google play.

        • @kale:

          Like this one - https://www.bigw.com.au/product/telstra-tempo-hanset/p/WCC10…

$29 from Big W with Kit Kat 4.4

        • @Noobist45: I have this phone and use it for another purpose. Save your money and buy something better. The screen resolution is terrible and lag a fair bit and battery life sux.

        • @kale
I will never use it except for the convenience of not having to swap over sim cards.

The same sim card packs are $5 at Coles from Wednesday. Going to buy 2 more.

    • For one off use Telstra prepaid is indeed much better. But if you need more credit Telstra starts to become a bit of a hassle.

      • +2

You can buy more than one starter pack and transfer the credit all onto your main sim using Creditme2U it's not to much trouble.

Not much use to many on here who aren't with telstra

    • +5

Telstra website has them up for $15 for $30 and you can get another $10 back from cashrewards, so it'll only end up costing you $5.

      reference: http://www.cashrewards.com.au/telstra-pre-paid

      • Can I activate prepaid start kit as many as I want?

      • Wow…. $30 google play for $5? Anyone actually done and used it?

        • Yes.

There's a limit of $20 in one transaction though, so you can't buy expensive apps like GPS apps.

        • +1

@lostn: Limit has increased to $100

    • +1

So as per Noobist45's question can you sign up for Telstra pre-paid while using another Telco. I too am with Amaysim so can I stay with Amaysim but sign up for the Telstra pre-paid deal and only use it when purchasing apps etc? Also if that is possible does it have an expiry?

      • +6

What I did and still doing at the moment is the following:
        1. After getting the Telstra SIM, activate it online via telstra.com/activate, select Activate now, Pre-Paid and I'm activating as a new service.
        2. Enter all the details need, phone (service) number/SIM number, name, address etc
        3. When it comes to Select Offer, I choose Simplicity or Long Life pre-paid, this way you have 60 days or more to use the credit.
        4. After all the above is done, it will take around 4 hours for the activating to come through, by that time, you can use the $30 Telstra credit as Google Credit.

To use the $30 Telstra Credit as Google Play Credit.
        1. Before pop in the Telstra SIM into your phone, Disable Mobile Data in Settings, turn on the WI-FI and connect to a stable WI-FI, this way when you power up the phone, it will not use the credit if the phone decide to download data.
        2. Pop the Telstra SIM card into your phone and power it up. Keep your current SIM card aside so you can pop it back in once done.
        3. After phone power it up, connected to WI-FI then launch Google Play Store app.
        4. Search for the Movie/App/Book/Music you like.
        5. Tap on $x.xx to buy it (wait for the pop-up box)
        6. After the pop-up, it will show the amount you need to pay, with down triangle next to it, such as $x.xx \/ Do NOT tap on BUY, or it will use your google balance.
        7. Tap one the $x.xx \/, another menu will pop up and asking you to select Payment Method, tap on Payment Method.
        8. You will see Enable Telstra Billing from the list, tap on it. It will fire off an SMS to Telstra to confirm (if it doesn't work, you may need to wait few hours for your account to be fully activated)
        9. After it confirms the paymenet method, just make sure you purchase your play items via Telstra Billing.
        10. Once you done with the $30 credit, you can all Telstra to cancel the pre-paid as you can only have 5 active service under one account.

Note: this means the item you purchase cannot be more than AUD$30, and I don't think there is anyway to combine multiple Telstra credits.

        • Am I correct in saying that any single transaction in the Google Play store made with the Telstra Billing method cannot exceed $10?

        • +1

@william89080: I've managed to done transactions at $14.95 for last few weeks, so my understanding would be it can't be more than whatever the amount of Telstra Credit you had in your account.

        • +2

@spot2001: The limit is $100 per purchase up to a max of $500 per month, and you can transfer credit from other sims. So get 5 starter packs -> transfer all their credit onto the first one -> you now have $146 play credit to use for a $50 cash cost.

        • @iratepirate: How do you transfer the credit from other packs to one number?

        • @william89080: The easiest way is to txt "Transfer" to 1258888 from the phone with credit. Then enter the number to transfer it to (hit send). Then enter the amount (up to $10 per day), hit send. Txt "1" to confirm.
