Seagate External 3TB Harddrive $79.95 @ David Jones (SA) ?

There might not be any left or may have been limited to Marion SA but I thought I would still post it.

I grabbed a Seagate 3TB hard drive from Marion (SA) David Jones for $79.95

May be worth it to check out the other David Jones stores for more clearance stock as I grabbed the last one in Marion, there were two and someone bought one before me and I took the last one.

Can confirm at DSE the 4TB of this model is $89.10 after 10% off.
The Toshiba Canivi portable drives are $44.10 for 2TB and $26.10 for 1TB after 10% off.

    • Is that instore?

Must be, all their online ones are newer and different looking models

        • Yeah, I'm going to visit my local store tomorrow and try and see if they have anything left.

It seems ~$200 online for the newer models?

In store only, has to be the same packaging as the OP's, white box with green expansion text.

    • Happen to know how much the 5TB model is?

Someone mentioned it was $99 in another post but I can't confirm as I did not see any.

  • I found the same at dicksmith Moonee ponds on Wednesday. Was behind the counter but visible. Last one.

  • wow that's cheap

I saw this at DJs but passed as I dont need any more storage, but the main reason: I am sure I read that theses 3TB Seagates have an unusually high failure rate.

  • I want to buy an Internal Hard Disk to replace the one in my desktop urgently. Can someone tell me a good deal for this at the moment. Size doesn't matter. Anything from 1 TB - 3/4 TB as long as the price and brand is good.

I just returned my one of these. Failed 2 weeks before the 3 year warranty expired. JB Hifi let me replace it with a WD as they said they had lots of probs with these even though it was $10 more expensive.

    • That timing sounds about perfect. There seems to have been a manufacturing issue with the 3TB Seagates after the 2011 floods in Thailand. They have likely fixed it by now but a lot of the stock Dick Smith is clearing out is older stock and the 3TB drives could be the the problematic ones.

No issues with 4TB that I know off,

    • Out of curiosity @nzbenny, did you have to remove the internal hard drive from casing and use it somewhere else and found out there's an issue with it and returned it to JB? Thanks

      • No, I was showing to do so, but managed to copy most of the data off it without needing to, so I just formatted it and took it in. It worked when they tested it, but I explained how it would are strange noises, power off and eject…and that I lost data, so they dealt with it really well.

        • Thanks for this mate.

I couldn't bring myself to buy a Seagate 3Tb hdd after the high failure rates in a data server farm (yes it's not a normal situation for them).

    4Tb fine….3Tb not so much.

The last 4Tb seagate external hdd I bought was from Officeworks $189 some months back, but there have been some better deals around.

Definately avoid 3Tb models.. as Corbin states… https://www.backblaze.com/blog/3tb-hard-drive-failure/

    • My 3TB Seagate is special.

      • I bought my ones in 2012 and they still going.

  • Anyone bought in WA or elsewhere?

    • I'm interested to know that too

So what if I found any of the above should I keep away from as would hate to get one that going to pack in a few years from now etc

$800 is still pretty expensive for a paperweight. Hah!

    • Oops. I added an extra 0.. I meant $80

  • I managed to get one from DJ perth cbd around the first sale week, was behind a counter and someone else had it and decided not to get it as the box was a bit opened but unused $80. But randomly popped into DS cockburn and spotted the 2tb seagate central for $89 (paid $70 after vip and mates rates disc!) so might return the 3tb one. Dont really require 5tb of space..

3TB Seagates have reported a high failure rate in hard drive tests

    • That's what I have read too. I bought one of those $50 2TB Seagate Expansion from Aust Post a few months ago, I think I am more comfortable with that one instead.

They'd have to pay me way more than $79 to take on one of these timebombs…

You could use them as a teritary copy attached to a TV or something like that to play videos or display pictures. Just don't make it your primary drive. Then again why buy a headache?

      • Exactly, its just a headache waiting to happen… then you've got run around and get another one anyway..

the price should be give away enough that they are just trying to get these off the shelves..

  • Chadstone DJ should have one as I just returned mine 1 hour ago..
