    • I also would like to know the answer to this as well. I hope someone who knows how they work will give us a well-explained answer.

      • +2

There are already well explained answers, it just takes the time to read and comprehend the different options. Check out the whirlpool wiki http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/telstraprepaid

I bought four for $10 each from Officeworks last week but I will grab a few more from this new deal. I haven't done the Telstra thing yet but seeming I have a dual SIM phone it is a no brainer.

  • $5 gives you 200min international calls, $700 local calls, and 7.5Gb of data that lasts 30 days just make sure you activate it before January 4th or something as extra bonus data is given out for the freedom plus plan.

    • Before Jan 25th I think the date is to get the extra data

  • Wow $5 for $30. If you buy 12 of them can last for a year!

    • You might need 13. Some Telstra prepaid plans have a duration of 28 days.

  • A noob question - If I put one of these in my iPad, and then take it over to the USA, approximately how long with that data last?

    • +7

      0 days

  • +1

    Hanging out for smoked salmon

  • guys - never used these kist as I am on postpaid but with very less data 1 GB per month.
do people who already have plans also buy these or not really…
i am assuming people are already using prepaid or postpaid, so do you buy these as a switch over or additional sims?

    cheers

    • +1

      multiple reason.

For most it would just be the google play credit.

For others who don't care to have a permanent number they use it for the cheap data/calls. Or they have a 2nd phone and use that.

For the smart ones, who have a dual sim phone they can use it all

      • Or you could transfer from one number to another carrier - if you took advantage of the $2 40 prepaid vodaphone sims they had at dicksmith the other day — or the $5/$10 30 Optus sims deal Woolworths had a few weeks ago

        • Thanks baghern & YoursTruly..
thats what i was thinking but just wanted to get an opinion.. this is what i used to do in my uni days… cheap SIMS with alot of balance and call my GF with those numbers..

Stopped at my local Coles, they had 6 or 7 Telstra kits. Seemingly from the same batch expiring Sep 2017.

I took 2 and the best part, the look on the attendant's face was priceless when it scanned at $5 each.

    • "Oh that's cheap!"

I got two with October expiry. I might get two more at Officeworkss just for the price beat.

    • Edit : replied to wrong post

  • They are already sold out in Hurstville Westfield. They are being rationed at 1 per person at the train station.

You better be quick if you want tuna

    • I just got one from Hurstville Westfield. She even asked how many I wanted lol. Train station one sold out.

  • not sure if they didnt have any or somebody bought them all, but baulkham hills have none :(

  • Only bothered to pick up 1

  • What's the significance of the January 25th activation cut-off? Is this only for the bonus data, or do all of these kits effectively expire on that date? The fine print suggests the former, but the larger print is less clear.

    • +1

25th Jan is for bonus 5GB data. Expiry on the kits will be late 2017 most likely (mine are Oct 2017).

  • Just came back from Coles Tooronga VIC. Staff told me all gone. SERIOUSLY?

    • +1

      Hahaha that's BS.

  • +1

there are 5 in glen Waverley, I picked up 4 and left 1 for ozbargainer.

    • All gone by the time I came in yesterday :(
Wouldn't even give me a rain check

      • Generally Coles don't give rainchecks on telco products.

  • About 5~10 left at Coles Sunnybank Hills Shopping Town Brisbane, however I was limited to 1 only. I then went to Coles Pinelands Sunnybank Hills Shopping Center Brisbane, again I was limited to only 1.

  • @tianyujojo - thanks for the info , I was going to hit Tooronga tonight, will have to try somewhere else. So far I have 2 from Box Hill and I got 4 from Camberwell, I might have cleaned them out, because I asked for five.

    • +1

Lucky I went to Camberwell at 8am this morning.

  • Took the last 3 from north land sc on my way home.

  • Got 2 this morning. The lady at the counter was very friendly and FAST! She said, oh I knew exactly where to look because someone just bought 5.

There looked to be a heap there, so when I went past again I bought another 2. Obviously no limit at my store.

  • -3

Went to Coles and it is on the shelf with the $2 sim (not in counter), grabbed all 13 of them and use self checkout

    • Broden much ?

    • Can you activate all 13? Isnt it limited to 5 pre-paid sim per person?

      • U dont have to activate all of them at same time

        • I mean even one at a time, you will have 13 pre-paid account under your name in the end. Is that ok?

        • @reservin: just De-activate the service after finished using

        • @ccwwayne: Oh.. never thought about deactivating it. Thanks!

        • @ccwwayne: how?

        • @qwertyzx:

          • The limit isn't 5 per user. I've around 30 simultaneous active.

          • Use Live Chat to deactivate.

  • +1

The liars at Coles Caulfield insist that they've sold out. More BS.

  • Score another one from Coles Coburg VIC. Sales assistant said it's the last one.

  • Often stores get regular, even daily delivers of these Starter Kits. A Coles employee may be able to verify this but it was the case for the Optus SIMs at Coles Express.

    • Not my Coles Express. I asked for a couple of expired SIM starter kits because my the freebie ATM voucher was just about to expire hoping Optus will exchange. Yes, maybe they get regular deliveries if your store is not slack in ordering them but there's probably no guarantees about that. I've had a similar experience at Woolies - I had to ask them to extend my rain check (which have a year's expiry) as the current customer service manager refused to provide a substitute product (as per the Woolies rain check policy.) despite the time elapsed which a previous asst. manager had done. Recently, I found another Woolies had stacks of them - but I didn't have my rain check with me - and I thought Voda had discontinued the product.

      • +1

If you did manage to get expired Optus SIMs, try activating them. I've activated a couple that were past their expiry with no trouble.

        • Thanks. How far past? I might try that as a Plan B. The 2 I was forced to activate by the end of October from the previous promotion and another active one I found are still lying around here unused because I don't want to waste them with small amounts of usage. Still, I don't think I can manage to resist buying one of these Telstra starter kits.

        • @Stingo:

Ahh I think I tried up to a week.

        • @Stingo: I once activated sim 1 month past expiry date, but also got a failed attempt on one over 1 month so I think generally within 1 month is safe for optus.

  • They had stacks of the Telstra sims at Tweed Heads around 4pm today.

  • The lady at the counter happily exclaimed "bloody rippa!" when she scanned them'~ obviously she didn't have a clue of the reduced price!

Thanks OP, grabbed the 7 they had at Ellenbrook Coles

  • Note Telstra have 5GB bonus if connect to their Freedom Plus prepaid plan. So $5 for 7.6GB in total !

    • Welcome to the party.

    • Extra, extra, read all about it!

  • Really need a way to give these away for those who just use it for the Google credit

  • Went to a Coles Express in George St CBD. They don't honour the discount. Grrrr…

    • Yeah, Coles Express and Central don't do Coles promotions.

  • Lots of stores only sells 1 unit per customer while other stores ran out of stock

    • Go to woolworths instead.

      • Woolworth qld it scans at $30.

        • Then try Harvey Norman :)

          @tianyujojo:

Ahhh, geriatric Gerry's trying every trick in the book to get ahead of the pack.

        • @tianyujojo: Or Officeworks!

  • Anyone getting an error with Google play?

    "Wrong user"

    • you need to call telstra and get google play activated

      • Oh OK, thanks! Is this for every time?

        • 1 time for each sim. They used to just work but now seems you need to get them activated…

  • Coles stores out of stock (all in NSW):

    • World Square
    • Waterloo
    • Carlingford
    • Leichhardt
  • Got 2 at coles yesterday and price beat today at OW for $4.75!

  • Is there a point in getting a lot of these as you'll have to activate them all before 25 Jan to get the 5gb data. But that 5gb will only last 28 days from the date of activation right? So what would be the point of having say 25gb (5x5gb) if it will only be valid for one month? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

    • Activate them later in the year.

      • yeah but you won't get the 5gb bonus though?

        • No. But on Data Pass you will get 3GB.

  • Are the starter for tablet essentially the same thing as starter pack for mobile?

    • +1

Yep. Different packaging. All the same options available upon activation. Effectively no practical difference.

  • With the telstra credit, what's the best way of paying for things over $30?

    • +1

Activate 2 cards and transfer credit to one of them

      • thanks mate!
