I hope those $5 Telstra $30 starter kits aren't made of unobtainium.

    • +1

Is it even worth trying Coles, or do you go straight to Officeworks for a price match?

      • +1

Won't help if Coles is out of stock.

        • +4

If they are out of stock, ask for a raincheck. Usually l get a few and cash them in when I need them.

        • +2

          @shiningstars:

How do you get rainchecks on these?

I've tried this in the past, with both coles and woolworths. Neither gave rainchecks on telco products.

        • @KaptnKaos:
I just ask at the service desk. Never had any issues. If you are refused try another store.

      • I went Officeworks this morning and there are only $2 kits available.

    • The QLD catalogue does NOT have the attached page in the catalogue. At the bottom of the scan it has: LH-WA-METRO and numbers.

The catalogue delivered to my place does not contain this page and has on the bottom of page: BP-QLD-METRO and numbers.

In the past some specials not in the catalogue are still in store, so we'll have to wait and see if the sims (and phones) on that page are offered in Queensland. Hope so.

      • Looks like I am looking at the current catalogue which was delivered late to my house rather than the one which starts on this coming wednesday. Apologies.

        • Yeah they are always nationwide, sometimes fruit and veg special can differ but that's about it :)

    • My local enforces a one per customer rule so they usually have them in stock.

      • Not mine, thats why you gotta get in first. You snooze you lose :P

      • I got 7 from one store and 5 from another today.

  • +3

Damnn… Just bought few from Woolworths for $10 ea :(

    • Same, from Harvey's

      • I'm sure Harvey have some kinda Price Protection or Return. But Woolworths not, thats double the price :(

  • wow, the new low for telstra kit, time to stock up

      • They were 3GB data pads, not $30 star Starter Kits. I bought six and recently activated them. Even activating on Data Pass only gives me 3GB, no recharge credit.

I'd say the $1 deals at Woolies and Coles were better, however they did require a $30 grocery spend as well.

    • $1 is the professional price

      • Yup $5 is not the new low

  • Expiry date on telstra sim?

    • Yes.

    • Probs 2017.

    • +5

In my bitter experience, you can not trust the expiry date printed on Telstra starter packs.
I have bought these over past years, since they were first being posted on OzBargain, and they mostly have had expiry dates 18 months or so into the future.
Earlier this year I had a number still to activate and discovered that, a couple of months prior to the printed expiry date, when I attempted online activation, Telstra's systems said words to the effect that "The SIM card has already expired".

There followed long and frustrating and fruitless online chat with Telstra's worthless support droids - obviously in some offshore jurisdiction and untrained - who had zero knowledge, zero authority to do anything, and zero understanding of the implications of Australian trade practice law in terms of misleading and deceptive conduct. I got nowhere. Tried telephone support and only got Philippines-based operators who were as clueless and powerless as the online chat people.

Eventually I presented at a Telstra shop (first verifying that it was a company-owned one and not a dealer) with one of these and there followed much looking up online, checking my ID and online account, and suspicious scrutiny of the package and the SIM, followed finally by a replacement with a new starter kit which they forced me to have activated on the spot. Had I presented with all the bad SIMs they probably would have forced activation of them all on the same day, which kind of defeats the purpose.

Telstra have many ways of punishing people who try to be their customers. This was a very bad and time-wasting experience.

TL:DR Don't trust Telstra starter pack expiry dates, and don't assume it will be easy to claim your consumer rights from Telstra.

      • Often two weeks out from expiry the number will be recycled by Telstra. I've had this happen and have had the $30 recharge credit and bonuses applied to a number of mine via Live Chat.

If it's no longer available months before expiry it's likely someone else has activated the number without opening the SIM pack.

      • This case might be worth having another look - were these bought off a brick-&-mortal retailer, and if yes mind if you share the suburb? Having bought shedloads of these SIM's in the last decade it did cross my mind that all a clown needed to do was note down the SIM serial, and off he/she went. Due to various reasons I won't specify further.

I have a gut feel yours could be the case where your SIM serial had been ripped and preactivated by some thief month before you got around to it, hence the impression that Telstra's date was invalid. In the last few years up to last week, I have activated my data/non-data packs up to 2 days prior to expiry (all online) and no issues whatsoever…

edit: seems that sween64 has beat me to it, same scenario

        • Yeah that's been the case with Telstra sims for a long time especially as they like to show the serial/activation key in plain sight.

Vodafone transitioned to having it sealed and requiring a the hidden temp PIN although never really seen a need to hoard these up since they can't be used for Google Play anyways.

With summer tennis coming up, I bet the taste will be a grand-slam ace.

      • +2

        Riiiiight…

  • How many GB data on the Telstra sims?

    • its 5 something if you activate before some date in Jan for freedom plus plan

    • +1

      7.6GB on Freedom +

1.3 GB daytime, 1.3 night time and 5 bonus.

As Balls said that's only if you activate in Jan, otherwise it will revert to 1.3GB

      • When you activate with the Freedom plan do you have to pay for that plan? I just want the data to use while away in January - looking for a cheap top up

        • +1

You buy the kit and activate it, giving one month of access. If you want another month you need to pay $30 to recharge.

  • Are these sim cards good for Google Play credit? Is that still a thing?

    • Yep

    • Yes, still good.

    • pardon my ignorance, but how does one obtain google play credit from the sim card?

      • You can't use this Telstra credit to buy Google Play credit, but you use this Telstra credit to buy music/movies/apps. Up to $20 limit per transaction if I remember correctly the limit is still in place.

        • +4

Telstra increased the limit to $100. 👍

        • Can you please post instructions of how to do this?

        • @heal:

When you click purchase on an app etc, a pop up will ask you how you would like to pay.

An option will let you charge to your Telstra credit :)

You will need the Telstra sim active in your phone as well.

        • +3

Just an FYI for ppl last time i did this it took over 6hrs for the service to become active, and almost 24hrs before purchasing in google play paying via Telstra would work… patience and it'll work

        • @Xizor:

Although for a few the spend limit is not setup requiring a 15 minute wait to ask telstra to put on a "bigpond spend limit".

        • Wow this is awesome. Wish I had an android phone. The asus memo 7 don't take SIM cards

        • @Jared17: You still can purchase Android apps for your Memo 7 I think. I was using a Samsung Galaxy S3 phone previously and activated this Billing to Telstra credit on Google Play store. Now I have switched over to iPhone 6 and I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 (wifi model), I can still purchase apps from Google Play store on my S2 and charge it towards my Telstra credit.

        • @edfoo: thanks for the tip but I only have an iPhone that takes a SIM card now

        • @Unorthodox:

so this start pack gives you $30 of google play credit?

        • @thydzik:

          Yep, $30 starter pack = $30 credit and 40 is 40 etc

        • @Unorthodox:

          thanks.

is there anyway to stack multiple sims if the purchase is above $30?

        • @thydzik:

Nope, you'll need to combine with your other payment methods or creditme2u (unconfirmed)

        • @Unorthodox: hi, Does all of telstra's prepaid plans include $30 play store credit? so if i activate the freedom plus plan i can get 7.5gb data and $30 play store credit as well?
          Thanks.

        • @user01:

You can go for the long life option and still get the $30 credit but it lasts more than 30 days

Note: I can't seem to use my credit for Google play on two of these sims… Not sure if it's just me though… :(

Unless you have a deal for a time machine too, it doesn't really help us lol.

But fine, relevant for "reference" purposes.

Btw I think it was actually $1.

    • wrong and irrelevant now.
it was $1 and it is expired

    • +1

Abit harsh to neg the guy. I don't think he was being trollish. It might be useful info for some ozbargainers to watch out for similar deals in the future.

      • Agree with you. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt (before I got pos'd and he got neg'd) by saying "relevant for reference purposes". Didn't sound trollish to me either.
Maybe he got negged for getting the price wrong… LOL

        • No worries. My comment wasn't directed at you, and good to know someone else thought the same haha

  • Can you actually buy Google Play credit, or do you need to spend it directly on apps/music etc?

    • AFAIK only directly. Can also use for IAP though

      Yes, still good.

      • what about now? ☺

  • I run out of tomato sauce but I can't wait until Wed for the $3 2l :/

    • +4

Go to Maccas and grab some of their free sauce. It'll go till Wednesday.

    • I reckon Aldi's regular price would be around that. Oh, and I see the small size in the squeezey bottle is competitive again in price with IGA and Woolworths. I like Tomato sauce but 2L is too much for me to keep around unrefrigerated.

50% Off Duracell Coppertop Batteries AA 16PK Or AAA 14PK $9.75

Unless you need particularly long shelf or discharge life, you are still better off with the batteries from Bunnings as the cost per Wh is roughly half this even on this 50% off special.

Those who have bought the cheap Telstra kits, how many can you buy per time? I was thinking of getting 6.

    • Probably a limit of 2, that's generally the norm.

    • +5

It's up to the whim of the person serving you.

    • I got four at one store last time

    • +1

I've bought 6 at once at Kmart before.

    • my record is 9

    • Terms say one per customer, but it's up to the person that serves you.

      • self serve

        • +2

good luck, these are locked inside the customer service cabinet, only the $2 packs are flying around for self-checkout

        • @lgacb08:
          Not at all stores.

  • Thanks Trent

  • Any idea if big w price matches?

    • Possibly, but won't help if Coles is out of stock.

    • Probably. It has to be one of their listed competitors. I can't seem to find it on the website at the moment, maybe because I'm on mobile.

    • Yes - I did this last time when local Coles was out of stock. I just asked how much they were and the Big-W guy told me he had seen the on special in Coles for $10 and asked if I wanted them for that price. He gave me 4.

  • Was already considering another one @ $10 this last week. Most certainly grabbing another couple at this price. Glad I held out. Murphy's Law though - I bet they go for $1 at Woolies (with $30 spend) or something around Christmas time, like they did last Christmas.

    • +1

About time Woolies did a deal on their underwhelming Woolworths Connect SIMs.

      • Yeah makes no sense, they give great deals on Telstra kits and advertise them relatively heavily, but there Connect SIMS are stuck in a shadow.

      • They did have an EDR deal a while back on those $30 packs for $1 with $30 spend, plus $20 eGift Card when you activated. Would like to see that deal again.

        • +1

They did and had zero stock of their own sims in about 5 stores I went to and the attendants had no idea about the promotion. That deal was a waste of time

        • @lkp:
Others reported buying multiple of those $1 Woolies SIMs. My local Woolies had plenty of stock. I only wanted 1, as the $20 eGift Card was promoted after that EDR $1 promotion had ended, so we didn't know how good the deal was :(

Most stores stock only a small number of SIMs, so run out with popular promotions. Its probably easier to find stock if there are fewer Ozbargainers near you & try quieter stores. I've never had problems getting any of the different $1 deals.

Its always the same story - stock will vary by store & when they restock. I ask them to restock & when stock will arrive. New stock usually is delivered the day before the next catalogue starts. I then call the store to check or turn up just after stock arrives. Works for me. Saves running around to find stock. Others report getting a raincheck.

Always good to get along well with the staff so you get looked after. One Coles ran out of $1 Telstra packs earlier this year - one of the staff excitedly ran up to me as I entered the store to tell me stock had arrived ;-)

I've given these suggestions before in a similar deal, when people kept complaining it was impossible to buy the $1 SIM deal.

        • @Infidel: Yeah they assured me stock would be arriving before the deal ended and were very helpful but I'd expect woolies would stock a lot more of their own stock than other sims. I haven't had many issues getting optus sims. Not saying it's impossible to get sims as it seems that the competition here in WA isn't as high but it doesn't look great if you're trying to promote your goods with no stock in stores. They should have over supplied on this deal.

      • Most of the specials you see are supported by the vendors. Woolies generally only takes a hit on slow moving or clearance stock.

  • And 7-11, Kmart, target, Myers and rest, in sure during Xmas they will all catch up eventually.

    • Since when did Myer stock SIM packs?

Or did I miss that memo?

  • +1

Those Whiskas 12 pack boxes are pretty much the same price at IGA at the moment, for anyone whose cat is hungry today, not Wednesday.

  • Hey fellas, excuse the dumb question: would anyone know if I could use this Telstra SIM on an iPad 3G? Also, could I stuck up the data or would I need to change SIMs every time I run out? Many thanks!

    • Change SIMs each time. They can be used in an iPad n

    • Yep as long as it isn't locked to anyone other than Telstra.

      • Thanks fellas!!!

  • +1

Will someone please explain these Sim Starter kit things to a noob like me?

How does these things actually work? For all the starter kits, either from Telstra or other providers?
Lets say if I Buy a few of this 5$ sim starter kit. How can I be actually be benefited from them?
Currently I am on 18$ vaya month to month plan, where I get about $650 of calls, Unlimited SMS and 1.5 GB of data.
Will I be able to take advantages of these starter kit to pay less monthly and still get same or more than the things I am getting on my current vaya plan? These Sim Starter kits for 5$(either from Telstra, Optus, Vodafone or Boost) shows up in OZ BARGAIN pretty frequently.

Is it such that If I buy a few of these Telstra Starter kit, and then port my existing number from vaya to Telstra by using the first starter kit and then would I be able to recharge them every month with my second , third or fourth starter kit or for the time till these starter kits is due to expire?
And then what? I maybe be buy another few starter kit from Optus or vodafone (via ozbargain deals), and then port my number, keep on using them till they run out and go on and on like this and keep on paying only 5$( or a bit less or more) every month?

I am just assuming the above and if that’s how it works, then I understand its bit of a work for me as I will have to keep on looking for deals, and then jumping from carrier to carrier , and also get a day or two downtime sometimes.
But I am trying to save money here so I should be able to deal with a bit of a hassle if that gets me more data and less bills each month.

Hope I have explained my query properly. Would some one kindly explain this in layman's terms . How does these actually work? Which plans can be selected?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing this?

    Will be greatly appreciated.
