  • Sorry….but is 24 in a carton….?
Couldn't find that detail in the website.

    • +3

Look just to the right of the price..

    • +5

      "Per case of 24"

  • Hell yeah! Only until 2pm today? NSW time I expect?

Edit 2pm Wednesday, when you click the link.

    • +1

      tomorrow. "2pm Wednesday (AEDT)"

      • +1

Yeah, I see that now. When you did a search, it just said "until 2pm" on the search result. But on the product page, full sentence shown :)

  • I think it is till 2pm tomorrow AEST

Email I got said a 24 hour sale

If it's truly from Japan then it's an awesome deal.

Asahi is brewed in so many counties China Thailand UK are just a few of them.

    • yeah pretty sure this is the one from Japan

      • Yes, I have part of a carton at home I got the other month from them. I'll triple check when I get home from work.

        • +1

          website says:
          Country: Japan
          Bottled in: Japan

as opposed the 330ml that say: Country: China

Great news. We don't want rubbish beer from China like their crap milk powder. All inferior products. Next time you don't know what they put in their beer. Only Tsing Tao is worth a mention and that's cause of the Dutch there before.

        • @neonlight:

          What prejudiced nonsense.

The Dutch had nothing to do with the Tsingdao Brewery. And my personal experience, from living in China for a number of years, is that there are plenty of very drinkable beers brewed there.

        • +1

          @jackspratt:
I think for me at least it is the whole brewed under license. Just like Kirin brewed here. But worse. If you are going to import, get it from the source.

        • +3

@jackspratt: don't mind neonlight and his Fobbish usual anti china rant. Like you I have drank quite a few drinkable beers from china

    • I was told by a guy in Japan that all cans and draught is brewed in Japan, as is asahi black (bottles).

      • The bottles we get in Australia are brewed in China :(

All of the cans are direct from Japan, however.

        • I believe he is talking about the Asahi Super Dry Black, which are bottled in Japan I believe. Not Asahi Super Dry
          https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_ER_1000004292_10210…

        • @Mobe1969: Ah yes, my mistake.

        • +1

@brezzo: Yes, just the black. Which, IMHO, is one of the best beers going.

        • @DirtyBoots: agreed but where to get in Australia?

        • +1

@psych23: fortunately mobe1969 posted a handy link above (last I checked - about 3 months back Dan's didn't stock it, so thinking that it's a fairly recent addition). Otherwise if you're in Perth, the international beer place in Leederville has it, as does the Canton Lounge bar in the city.

        • @DirtyBoots: Tah bud - got a taste of it at Matsuris in Perth - yumm

        • @psych23: Matsuris- nice to know.

  • wowww this is good

For those interested this is equivalent to $43 for a slab of bottles. My Heinekens can take a back seat this Christmas :)

    • yeah same here! perfect timing for christmas

  • Can confirm they are Made In Japan. Bought some last year, still got 1 can sitting in fridge.

  • Great deal for a very good beer.

  • +3

I think the regular price is $72. At least that's what I paid last time.

$5.42/L is good price for a good beer.

    • Regular price is $72.99 on the website.

  • +3

    Kanpai OP!

  • +1

I just bought a slab of these for $69 last week.

They are the Japanese ones. I cant drink the ones in bottles that come from China. They taste like ass.

    • +3

      They taste like ass.

How do you know what that tastes like?

      • +2

probably very similar to donkey I should imagine

      • How do you know what that tastes like?

Maybe he's drunk Heineken before, there's a reason people abbreviate its name to a word that means butt.

  • -1

So the Woolies carton at $41 this week is rubbish? As in Chinese brewed & not as good?

    • +2

yes the bottles 330ml are china rubbish, only 500ml cans are made in japan

      • +2

so did the 1L & 2L cans, I got some last Xmas

        • Ooh, yes! My local First Choice had 3 1L cans for $10 last Christmas. Very pleased! I wish I had have purchased more.

        • @awaiko:

Yes I remember hearing about that once they'd sold out. And someone here posted that they knew about it, but didn't post to share the bargain as they wanted to keep it quiet… Great price though.

      • So you're trying to link an entire country / race to poor quality goods despite most electronics you own being made there?

Suppose aussie beers taste much better then. Here have a VB (aka piss-water) maaaaate!

        • +2

Are you talking about the Chinese made eneloops or the Japanese made eneloops?

      • Exactly I've loved Japanese beer for long. Can't believe so many versions and made in China as well. So crappy

      • +2

Woolworths eGift cards can be bought via Cash Rewards or Entertainment Book.

        • +1

          thanks sween64

    • +2

Does cashrewards work when paying by gift card?

      • -1

I don't believe so but 5% off with gift card is better than 4.5% off beer so may as well try it and see for yourself :)

      • +2

        Yes.
Source: I do it all the time.

        • Nice. I've never tried this. How fast are cashrewards emailing out the codes? Eg if I ordered one now would it get to me after the deal expired?

        • +2

@Mobe1969: I wouldn't risk it. Sometimes takes up to 12 hours.

        • +1

          @Mobe1969:
          thats what I did
posted the deal and ordered my giftcard from cashrewards
got it in about 2 hours but YMMV

so i got 5% off from wish gift card and additional 4.5% off cashrewards too (tracking confirmation just came through)

      • Yes. Definitely.

  • Thanks OP, I was so close to ordering this at 1st Choice for $80 using the AMEX deal but I couldn't find anything decent for $20 to make it to $100.

Speaking of Jap beer - whats the deal with Baird Brewing Rising Sun Pale Ale @ $141 per case!!!!

    • +8

Japanese microbreweries are still in their infancy, due to a stupid law in Japan where malted grain (wheat and barley) is taxed at a very high rate. The perverse incentives of this law result in crazy non-beer beverages, known as happoushu (literally "carbonated alcoholic beverage") made from unmalted grains such as rice, sorghum and millet. Happoushu has a terrible taste and gives terrible hangovers, but it's cheaper than full-malt beer like the above Asahi Super Dry, or Kirin Ichiban.

Baird is a brewery started by Americans in Japan who were fed up with the only beer options being 'dry'-style lagers or happoushu. It's brewed in Japan to a small scale (because craft beer is only just taking off there now), and they have to pay exorbitant taxes on the malt. These costs are passed on to the consumer, meaning if you'd like to buy Baird beer in Australia, you've not only got to pay import costs and domestic alcohol duties, but also Japanese malt taxes. Bit of a shame that probably 80% of the $141 per case is going to Australian and Japanese government coffers, but at least it's available in this country I suppose. They make a decent drop, but not worth it at that price of course.

      • +2

Japan has some odd alcohol tax laws. It's illegal to brew your own beer, sake or wine above 1% alcohol level. Home brew kits are available in Japan but include strict instructions on how to stick to the ridiculous limit. The tax law on alcohol is a hangover from a 1905 war with Russia where Japan needed more tax revenue. Once a tax is implemented it's incredibly difficult to reverse.

        • +2

          Except the Carbon Tax

        • @muncan: haha true. But it wasn't technically a tax. It was a price on carbon

      • +1

Fantastic drop, but not for that price.
Dan Murphy's was clearing them out for less $4/bottle in September. Needless to say, I bought whatever they had and I'm stingy.

      • +1

I had the Baird Pan-European IPA in Tokyo and it was fantastic.

  • +2

    What's the best before date?

  • thanks op :)

    Ewwwww beer in a can

    • -4

Yep, don't care if it's free. Pass.

    • +7

Beer in a can is actually better (in a craft beer world) as it reduces the amount of sunlight/UV on the beer. Probably not going to apply to Asahi but compare something like Mornington Peninsula Cans vs Bottles and you'll notice a difference.

      • Ahhh Mornington Peninsula…

I hate you firey1989, that reminded me of the hot springs down there, not to mention amazing fish and chips at Dromana!!

        jealous

      • +3

Just pour it in to a glass and it'll taste better.

    • Yes, if you keyhole sub these, youll have the biggest wizard stick in no time - even if you arrive late

  • Thanks! Just bought another 2 cartons!

  • Do the Chinese brewed ones ever make it here? I have only ever bought Canadian or Japanese brewed beers.

    • +2

this is the Chinese brew version (bottles) https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_98903/asahi-super-d…

I'm sure it use to be Thailand a year or so back

      • Used to be direct from JAPAN, then they went to Canada, Then Thailand, then now China. YUCK!

      • +1

yeah I remember the bottles used to be from Thailand as well but looks like they have moved main production to China?

    • I thought the Chinese brewed one wasn't too bad, though not as good as the Japan brewed.
The Thai brewed one was pretty bad though.

  • Damn I wish DM allowed splitting orders from C&C for some items, delivery for others. I was going to place a larger order by they don't have the other things I want in-store.

  • Slightly OT, but does anyone see those cool 2L cans any more? My Dan's doesn't seem to have them and hasn't for a long time.

    • +1

They usually only get them in for specials like Christmas, from memory. You can buy them from some other places online, but not cheap. Per litre, the 500ml cans are just (even without this special) exceptionally good value. With the 1l and 2l cans, you'd pay $100 to $120 a carton when they had them at First Choice, DM, etc.

Ah damn it, the online store I used to get my sake from (http://www.tokusen.com.au) has just closed down now. They carried the 2l cans.
