Dick Smith 40" UHD 4K TV $399 @ Dick Smith

180

Writing this post using the TV at the moment. TV quality is okay if you're bothered to tweak the colour and brightness/contrast settings. Has one HDMI 2.0 so you can get the full resolution with 60Hz but I wished they had a DisplayPort with it. But for $400 it's pretty good quality. Resoultion listed on website as 3840 x 2160

Using it for my Macbook and Windows Desktop machine running at 4k @ 60hz. Pretty good quality but I've yet to test console gaming and casual TV browsing.

I bought this TV instore to get it at the $400 price point. Apparently the cheapest it has ever been. Was about to buy a 32inch 4K monitor or a Ultrawide but I'm falling in love the 40 inch 4k format now.

    Parramatta NSW Store, Possible Storewide?

  • 9.5ms so might be some input lag yeah?
Otherwise pretty crazy for 40" UHD with HDMI 2.0

Compared to brand names, I say the DSE TV isn't doing too bad.

      • Response time and input lag are very different things. You can test by running a free windows program on a laptop in cloned screen mode. Set TV to game mode. Take a picture and the difference in time between the two on screen timers is approximately the lag.
I did this on a Bauhn TV and it was almost 300ms, unusable for gaming.

  • [ "I've yet to test console gaming .."]

    please advise as to lag/blur

The whole store is full of TV's?

    • Updated.

    • The whole store is full of TV's?

i think he was unsure because he didnt check the whole store for tv's? ;)

  • Remote Control No

has it really got no remote? wonder if this is the upgrade ive been looking for to replace my decade old dell 30"

edit: oh and is the bezel really as small as it seems in the pic?

    • +1

Strange, mine actually came with a remote =P must have been a typo.

      bezel is actually tiny =)

      • yea, probably obviously the specs wrong on the site. i would have been very surprised if it didnt. these days would have been quite the mistake to neglect having one.

        bezel is actually tiny =)

damn you…. couldnt you have told me it was huge and ugly? would have made me sleep better tonight for not buying one…

  • What's the bet that this TV is a piece of rebranded generic crap, that has bad picture quality?.

i have a kogan 55" for my HTPC, kogans been somewhat classified as about the worst products you can get but the tv's been nothing short of awesome the few years ive owned it. i mean sure you can be an elitist fanboy wank, but cheap tv's have always done well by me and far better than some of the shit ive seen come out of sony and samsung.

and at $400 for a 4k tv…. who cares if it dies in a few years time. just go out and buy a new 12k tv with the power popup dildos and the auto toast maker they will probably have out by that time…..

      • POWER POP UP DILDOS?! Shut up and take my money already!

        • +1

personally its the talking toast maker im looking forward to [/red dwarf]

Well, surely you don't expect to get $4000 quality for $400, right? Don't be a cheapskate. If you want $40000 quality, go buy a $40000 TV and stop posting you nonsense on a $400 deal.

  • Hdmi means only 1080?

    • i think its HDMI version 2

    • Hdmi means only 1080?

      short answer is, nope wrong.
longer answer is, google it. each different hdmi version adds more bandwidth and there for more resolution.

this is 4k, so can handle 4k bandwidth, obviously..

      • thanks @aussieprepper @nosdan

one of the shitty brands uses the same panel as Vizio for their TVs, but I can't remember which one. I think JVC do but those panels are the idea cheap panels to get at.

I bought the tv on special and thought a 4k tv for this price was great. Only to notice once set up the "ghosting is pretty much like the early models from 10 years ago. I would l[ke to advise Mr Dick Smith to actually listen to the sound of the tv.s with his name on it. I am pretty easily satisfied with anything, but GOSH i thing the speakers are so bad, like a mobile phone speaker, only worse. You WILL need a external sound bar or something similar.I would like to think in the year 2015 they would have better speakers. The tv looks appealing, easy to use, use little power, nice remote control, nice you can record tv on usb stick.

    • Meh the speakers aren't as bad as the reviewer made it to be to be honest. I haven't really noticed any ghosting issues with the TV either

          If there's something strange
In you 40" 4k dicksmith TV
          Who you gonna call
          Ghostbusters
          If there's something weird
          And it don't look good
          Who you gonna call
          Ghostbusters
          I ain't afraid of no ghost…..

  • Is it compatible with Vesa mounting at the back?

Hmmm, this or 34" ultrawide (2k) or 24" triple display (FHD) eyefinity setup? ponders…

  • how are you getting 4k resolution at 60Hz?
    HDMI?

OP, you got ripped off, it's only $399 (not $400) ;p

This should also have free shipping.

    • OP bought the TV in store. I guess the store pocketed the $1.

People have scored the equivalent, Onix I think, for $350 in sales at Target'.

        • I missed that Onix at Target for $399 a few months ago and have been keeping my eye out for it ever since but it doesn't seem to be coming back.

  • I can't see one for $399, only similar one for $449, am I missing something?

    • did you even click the deal link? i just checked and its still there

    • Go instore and ask, I've just checked today and it was $399

    • Thanks mate, the only other question I have is that would this be too big as a monitor?

      • I'm using this TV at the moment as a monitor. If you have a large enough desk, it's basically 4 21" monitor stacks 2 by 2. The resolution (if your graphics card or laptop can handle it) really makes the screen shine as it's perfect if you're sitting close, compared to a 27" 4k monitor.

At the moment I have Mr Robot streaming on one corner of the screen, Visual Studio on the 2nd, Facebook 3rd and Slack/Messenger on the 4th. Fits perfecting and I still have enough space for different windows.

  • Can anyone comment about the mounting points at the back?
