Sony A5000 + 16-50 Mm Lens and 55-210 Mm Lens Bundled for $543 ($493 with AmEx) at Harvey Norman

90

Merry Christmas all. Was busy browsing Harvey Norman's half yearly sale when I came across this and thought someone may benefit. The price on the site shows $1048 however when you go ahead and add the bundle it shows as $543. The camera is available on its own with the 16-50 mm lens for $444 however for an extra $99 it would be well worth getting the extra lens. (I've already purchased the a6000 from the previous HN deal but almost want to purchase this also to get the 15-210mm lens) Of course if you have AMEX you can get an extra $50 cash back. You cannot use the $25 sign up newsletter coupon.

  • Very tempting … don't need one … but sounds like a good price. Have a Canon SLR but this would make a nice walk around camera.

  • This is a very good price - similar price to 12 months ago (when the dollar was much better).

If you're prepared to ebay it, the 55-210 fetches between $150-$200, so worth it for $99. Wouldn't use it on this body, since it would be somewhat unbalanced.

Image-wise this thing should be equivalent to the A6000 - same sensor, same firmware features. Differences are in ergonomics - no EVF, smaller grip, but the A5100 has a touch screen.

@mini_wombat with the 16-50 lens, it wouldn't be bad as a walk around camera - still somewhat bulky, when compared to e.g. a rx100 - and the 16-50 has only average IQ - none of the E-mount lenses are great, apart from the 35mm and 50mm primes.

Personally, I'm holding out for either some micro-4/3 or A7 bargains.

    • I would sell both lenses which come with the camera and get a 50mm 1.8 … enough for me as always with me camera (and much smaller than my SLR). But maybe a x100 is a better option … go really small … #toomanychoices Maybe just live the bigger SLR body and the 50mm prime … bulky but better image quality and no extra cost.

      • I'd go for the 35mm 1.8 if you went that route - much more expensive though. 50mm on APS-C is just a bit too tight for anything other than portraits (and you have a DSLR for that).

Alternatively, sigma makes 19mm, 30mm and 60mm primes (all 2.8) for e-mount that are supposedly nice and sharp, and are less than $200 each.

        • Thanks for the tip .. Sigma might be a nice alternative for this camera. (hehe … and I love portraits … the 85mm is my favourite lens on my Canon.

    • Oops, was wrong about the sensor thing - I was thinking of the A5100 - the A5000 is the older model - still an ok camera, but the A5100 is much better.

Also makes this somewhat less of a bargain.
