Your 2015 Game of the Year?

Despite a lot of cynicism about the industry this year there have been some very notable entries to the gaming pantheon. The Witcher 3, Fallout 4. MGS V ((profanity) Konami) are some of the big names, but the more modest and humble studios and devs released some cool and interesting stuff too: Ori and the Blind Forest, Rocket League, Her Story, Axiom Verge, etc.

What stood out for you this year?

(Note: This is subjective. Don't give people a hard time because they say Fallout 4 (or some other big release). If Fallout 4 was their favourite game of the year it is their choice, there is no wrong answer with a subjective question.)

I remember playing that in 2013?

    • +2

Ow, might be controversial given the micro-transaction stuff.

      • I'm Level 30, and I've only met one player using a 'microtransaction skin'.

They look like trash, have no benefit (unless you get a stat-boost skin, which is a moderate chance and only gives you like +4 accuracy, which is easy to get with a cheap mod)

        Not really a big deal.

    • lol why the negs.

      was this a controversial game?

      • +1

The Payday sub on Reddit has the answer if you look at their top rated comments of all time

        https://www.reddit.com/r/paydaytheheist/top/

Basically the devs introduced micro transactions after promising not to do so.

        • Nothing wrong with that, our politicians do that all the time!

      • +3

And the fact it came out in 2013…

    • My my i thought this thread is meant to be non judgmental.

      Anyway i was just kidding.

I meant to say Smash Bros for Wii U.

      Happy New Year guys

      • Whilst not judgemental on your choice of game, I think the sheer fact that it isn't relevant as it wasn't a 2015 game. FYI Smash Bros was also 2014 :D

        • No way man! You're right December 6 2014 (AU)

This was the game that I bought on day 1 and I didn't even realize it was still 2014. LOL

    Dota 2 - Reborn

    • +1

Yep, another vote for DOTA 2 here

      • I played the shit out of this game over 3500hrs and I must say dota is slowly getting worse at least for my taste. The games have gotten longer with each update (they use to be 20-30 mins now they are 40-60mins). I could handle getting stuck with game ruiners for 20-30mins but now that its 40-60 i just can't play it anymore.

        • Not sure when they were 20-30 mins? i think the better your mmr generally the quicker the games. The culture is pretty toxic but ive clocked 4.7k hours myself and i keep coming back:)

        • +1

You only get 20-30 minute games if you win every lane with an early push strat team. Games have been ~50 minutes since before Dota 2 was released.

        • @rump parliament: I started playing Dota between TI2 and TI3 when the death ball strat, the split push strat and the global strat were the main 3. It just felt more fun. Every time you won a team fight you'd get a tower or 2. Now I feel as though you're lucky if you get a tower and you don't get 2.

There was also no "comeback" mechanic which made early fight heroes useless because by 30mins it didn't matter if they were 30-10 ahead, you'd still have similar team net-worth.

Teams also pretty much always have 2 or more carries now whereas before that was suicide. They do it now because they'll get rich late game anyway from comeback mechanic. I just feel like everyone's play has less impact and less meaning and is more drawn out than it was previously.

        • Find that games are generally faster now, carries need to get online faster and the game just snowballs

    Fallout 4 & Halo 5.

    • +11

      OP Said

give people a hard time because they say Fallout 4

      you're asking for it mate.

    • Halo 5 no doubt for me. Combat is damn addicting!
I cant stop playing it since it release.
I have 3 copys of the game lol
It's the game that i go too.
Been playing Legendary by my self this time round. So much fun.
Hard but not to a point im not coming back! Perfect blend for me.
      I have Fallout 4,Rainbow 6 siege,Tomb Raider ROTTR,Star Wars Battlefront,Uncharted Collection,Black ops 3,Just cause 3,Destiny the Taken King.
I have finished a couple of them but, Halo Halo Halo is always on my mind!

  • +15

ive put a considerable amount of house into Rocket League very good game.

    • Absolute quality. I second this. Something so basic made into something so beautiful. Will be something played for years within my friendship group.

  • +2

I would have loved to have said MGS V but

    MINOR SPOILERS
It ended with such a whimper
    SPOILERS OVER

So I'll say Fallout 4 because my addiction to it basically ruined my life for a few weeks.

Edit: Westerado Double Barrelled is a great Indyish game from this year that I liked

  • +3

Bloodborne, Until Dawn and Fallout 4 for me.

    • +3

BB and UD are both worth highlighting. It's nice to see a good survival horror game. For some reason which escapes me the industry seems to have arbitrarily decided that gamers no longer wanted those games. That is why Res. Evil turned into more of an action game… and sucked.

      • +2

Yeah I almost overlooked UD for some reason probably just due to the length of the game.
Until dawn was just so refreshing of a game, such a simple concept but so unique in todays gaming world.
Making the choices for the characters reminds me of those old scary kids books where you need to flick to a specific page and make impacting choices.

    • -5

Bloodborne is terrible game and ugly interface

      • +1

One of my all time favorites along with the Souls series.

  • +17

Life Is Strange was one of the best games I have ever played. Witcher 3, Rocket League, FO4 and Cities: Skylines were all excellent too.

    • +5

Calling out life is strange as one of the best games.. i'll have to play it now.

Never really heard that much about it.

    • Thanks I'll give a go less than 15 on xbox

    • +4

      Cities: Skylines for sure!

Anyone else up there appreciation for road networks and roundabouts?

  • Gta V - PC
    fifa 15 - ps4

  • +4

For me, my top games for 2015 would be:

    • Dragon Age: Inquisition
    • Life is Strange
    • The Witcher 3
    • Fallout 4
    • +4

I like Dragon Age too. It's a 2014 release. But if you played in 2015, I suppose that still counts. :P

      • +2

My bad. I spent so many hours on it this year that it didn't occur to me that it's a 2014 release.

  • +4

    Pillars of Eternity.

  • +5

Order 1886 for eye melting attention to detail.

    • +2

Great game, needed more game though

  • +3

Gta V or Rocket League - PC

Haven't had as much fun or laughs with a game in a long time.

    • +2

Is RL really that fun? $13 is tempting me to get it.

      • +3

It is more fun to play than the videos make it look. It's good quick fun, best played with a controller if you're on pc.

      • It is incredibly fun!!! So simple to learn, Hard to master.

Biggest tip - USE A CONTROLLER. Keyboard and mouse are acceptable for the first couple of days but you won't have accuracy or be able to fly well.

        • There's no difference between controller and keyboard/mouse other than personal preference.

        • +1

Um what? The analogue sticks on a x360 controller provide vastly better precise control than keyboard keys can

  • GTAV on PC, Batman Arkham Knight (PS4) and Fallout 4 now just scrapes in for 2015 too.

  • +4

    Fallout Shelter

    • Moving the time back and forth for this broke my iOS battery indicator :(

      • :(

        use the same game editor!

  • +1

Since I've not played much of this year's game, I think my favourite game of this year would be skewed (i.e. I've not played GTA 5, Rocket League etc etc).

My game of the year for 2015 is, even though it's a DLC, Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth (probably would mean Rebirth as well). I personally thought it built upon the existing idea well enough for me to pour additional 40 hrs in without feeling too repetitive. Afterbirth was fun to play, and it's a game that I will play again and again.

I've spent more hours with Fallout 4, but the game should've been better imo. It has irks that I looked over (well I tried hard to), but I was constantly reminded of the irks while I was playing it.

  • +8

The Witcher 3 for me. I didn't expect it to be as good as it is/was.

  • +3

    Shovel Knight!

    • +3

Yep. I think it even got its own amiibo.

      • +1

Certainly did! Just wish it was in smash :(

  • +10

    Rocket League

    • +2

      yep rocket league for sure

    • +11

      You forgot to mention 'virtual'.

    • +24

      The micro-transactions ruined it.

    • I completed it in 30 seconds.

  • +1

Home console : Batman Arkham Knight

    Handheld : Stein’s Gate

  • +1

Sniper Elite - Xb1 really enjoyed.
    FarCry4 was good fun too
    (Sunset overdrive, not sure)

  • delted

  • +2

Fallout 4 I guess because it's the only game I played this year.

  • +10

Witcher 3 PC gets my pick. Graphics, story, immersion both put Fallout 4 to shame. I'm a massive fallout fan and while i do like fallout 4 it really fell short on so many things, seriously in its current state it should of be released years ago.

I decided to buy life is strange and ori from the steam sales, both seem to be well received.

  • +2

    mario

    • Life is Strange
    • Tales from the Borderlands
  • +9

The Witcher 3 is my game of the year and CD Project Red the studio of the year with their attitude toward gamers. Amaysing game, one of the few games that got the emotional storytelling right following the likes of the last of us and walking dead S01, even thought it took me 100 hours to finish, never felt stretched, never got bored and I enjoyed every single hour of it.

  • +4

    Hunniepop

Yes I'm serious. The fact that it's pretty much an erotic game aside the match 3 is done very well.

My only complaint is that it's rather short.

    • +1

      TWSS

  • +1

    Team Fortress 2

  • +5

Until Dawn was my favourite game this year. The rise of tomb raider is also high on the list

    • +1

      Ctrl + F

      Tomb

      Yes, upvote :D.

      Its an amazing game.

      • +1

You would've wasted your upvote if the post actually said "I am a vampire and I love hanging out in my Tomb playing Star Wars Battlefront"

  • +2

I have played a lot of games this year across all platforms including MGSV FO4 the witcher 3, life is strange and many more. The GOTY this year was the witcher 3 followed closely by xenoblade chronicles x. Metal gear would be higher had they bothered to finish developing the game. Life is strange and tales of borderlands were great episodic games too.

  • +6

Should of added a poll OP.

    Witcher 3 gets my vote.

  • +1

Fallout 4 only game I have try to put an effort into playing.

    • +1

For this reason me too…it has it flaws but I keep going back to it.

I sneak away from the kids to play for a quick 30mins here and there…I have done around 90hrs so far and its not waning..

  • Fifa 16 :D

  • +2

    The Witcher 3

  • +4

    Ori and the Blind Forest!

    • Agree but it was a bit short compared to other games, hopefully the DLC is out soon.

  • +8

Star wars bf3 = let down of the year

    • +1

if its more maps you want you can buy more for the low price of an entire game again!

    • +2

Its not too bad. Better than battlefield hard-line.

      • IMO Hardline is better, it had a lot more content compared to Battlefront despite falling short of BF4.

        • I compare everything to battlefield 3 which was 10/10

  • +2

    Ploughin Gwent

  • +3

Has to be Cities: Skylines for me!

  • +4

The Witcher 3 definitely. Honourable mentions: Rocket League, Life Is Strange, Ori and the Blind Forest.

  • +1

    heroes of the storm

    • Same for me, 2015 was a good year for Heroes. Lots of improvements, their Dev team is amazing.

  • +2

Helldivers. Amazing online co-op top down shooter with punishing but rewarding mechanics and incredibly supportive devs.

  • +1

    Bloodborne, Fallout 4, Project Cars.

Finished The Witcher 3 and for the first twenty hours I believed it to be the best thing is played for years but as it went on I began to see stuff that changed my mind. Glad lots of others enjoyed it.
