  • does this do the same job as tivo?

    • +2

At a basic level it does. with Tivo there is a more advanced menu structure, and you are able to record 2 shows at once. Otherwise its effectively the same. TV Recordings can be scheduled based on the EPG or manually programmed as needed.

    • This unit is far more basic than a Tivo, as mentioned the Tivo can record 2 things at once. The Tivo also uses an Internet connection to download TV guides with this info it has the smarts to record a TV program even when its timeslot varies from week to week.

So its a single tuner :( useless

  • Hi jmg146,

I bought one of these when COTD was selling but the one I got was with torn seals (original seals torn and new seals replaced over them). And after trying it, it was faulty in some functions. However, COTD has excellent return policy and they fully refunded me plus free return postage. I really would like to buy one now but I am afraid I will get a similar open-box one. Are these 100% brand new sealed boxes? And please advise your return policy and who is responsible for return postage costs.

    Thanks.

    • +3

      Hi 2true,
These are 100% brand new stock, direct from the Aussie distributor. The new delivery just arrived in Australia the other day and we secured a special shipment.
If product is faulty or damaged on arrival, it is to be returned to us under warranty and it will be replaced. Postage costs are on us.
If you simply change your mind, an order can only be cancelled/refunded prior to the item being shipped.

      • Thank you for clearing that up, hopefully there will be no need for a return!

    • I got one too, but seals were intact and it's still going great!

  • i don't have this but my friend bought one before from COTD. He found that the tuner is not that sensitive, he can't get all channels. But personnally, i think it is a very good deal.

  • RRP of 349.00 on your site ?? when was that the rrp ?

    • That was the RRP up until last month, and as far as we've been notified (by the Aussie distributor that is), it hasn't changed.

  • I had a quick look but it looks like the HDD which is necessary to actually record is an additional cost (160GB $90, 320GB $105, 500GB $139)?

So although the price for the unit itself is good, beware that unless you have a spare 2.5 inch drive hanging around, you can't record without spending more money.

    • All hard drives come installed in the player prior to dispatch. 640GB HDD also just available at $175.

      • seems a bit excessive MSY sell 500GBs for 100, installation for these is a 5 minute job. (i have one.)

great price on the player (specially with free shipping)though i also got one when they had them on sale last time for about this price.

if you sell the 6200Cs for about 30 odd bux you'll be laughing.

love the wireless functions on these units… totally replaced the need for a media PC in the lounge room… (no Internet and games etc but does the job great!)

these are a good little unit.

    • -2

You don't need a hard drive… you can record directly onto a USB stick, although you're obviously restricted by its capacity.

      • Buddy, No you can NOT record to an external USB or HDD, only to the installed internal HHD. I have used this unit and there is no way you can do that.

        • Let's just agree to disagree. A colleague has it as well, and he records directly to USB stick with no Hard drive. Also, there are only 4 units left at Eljo.

          • @tightarse: Would really like to get this confirmed as this would be why i would be buying also what is the format of externaly recorded programs ie can they be played elsewhere ?

          • @tightarse: The Rep has confirmed recording is only to the internal HD, may I ask how did you know there are only 4 units left? I can not find any stock indicator at the item's webpage.

          • @tightarse: I can also confirm you cant record on a USB stick. your mate must have a HDD…or a different model.

  • can you just use an external 2.5Gb portable hard drive via usb and not put an internal 2.5" inside the dvico

    • Recording has to be to an internal HDD. It can be any size, 2.5" SATA.

    • the unit itself, in essence, is a USB powered portable hard drive, and will function as such……so transfers are easy from/to pc.
Added bonus of media player/recorder built in

      • Andy, this is one of the features, but one would probably argue that the media player/recorder is the prime feature, and the fact that you can use it as a USB hard drive is a bonus. There is no real reason to by this as an $89.95 external drive enclosure. The real reason to buy this is it is a good quality media player / recorder at a low price.

        • no argument here….just giving a hurrah to features that might not be apparent at first look. I have one of these and I think it's an excellent little unit, not too far from the price of an ordinary HD set top box, but with so much more……

  • What capacity drive is installed?

    • We can install any hard drive from 160GB - 640GB, depending on your preference. The sale is on the base unit.

      • you don't need a HDD to use it as a media player. get a wifi dongle and it goes great… there is a certain realtek chip it uses for wifi. also can use USB sticks to playback from

the unit also reads DVD isos which is pretty cool…
the new firmware is also better than the one that came installed on mine a few months back.(i had to manually update it as they didn't come with the latest firmware.)

so far has been good with everything ive thrown at it (doesnt do H264 unfortunately) and is only 1080i but its still good.

  • I bought one of these from eljo media at about three times the price a little while ago and love it. Picture is great, had no problems with signal strength, pretty good epg, controls are really simple for recording, records HD onto the hard drive.

It was easy to install a hard drive, the back clips off and you clip the hard drive in. Even if without recording, it's an inexpensive HD tuner or media player.

  • Great bargain, and although I don't want to cause you any frustration, I've found the wireless dongle on Static Ice for $22 delivered. Is there any way to get the price of that down a bit? Cheers :)

    • are you sure this was the correct model dongle? there is only one compatible, according to what we've been told.

      • any with that specific realtek chipset are compatible… try getting some non genuine ones to sell with it.

your customers will love you if you grab one test it :D

  • I'm fairly sure. Just typed in wl-6200c and first one came up as $22, with others as $45. First link claims Manufacturer is Dvico

    • +1

Unfortuantely, when you go into the actual product on the company's website, it explains that the $22 price is only available when ordered with the Dvico 6600A…

    • +1

CONDITIONS - Realtek DVICO WL-6200C WiFi Adaptor FOR Dvico 6600A Media Player (Conditions Apply, Must be Ordered with 6600A unit) ($22)

    • OK, so there's conditions for $22, what about $45?

  • Ok, should've looked harder :)

  • I bought one of these the last time they came around on dealsdirect. They are a nifty little unit, quiet and do a decent job, although I still prefer my IQ for usability. The tuner is impressive & easily scanned & picked up all channels. I easily inserted a 640Gb, which took approx 30 seconds. I've been told that the 1TB drives may not fit. I also took the firmware upgrade, which has certainly improved the functionality. The EPG is a bit clunky, and it seems to get confused on what the exact time is. Also, I don't like that you can't watch something whilst it's recording it, unless you buffer it in timeshift mode. Recording & timeshift should be seamless. But for the price, I really can't complain as it's the backup to my IQ on the main tv.

Does anyone know exactly which realtek chip is reqd for the WIFI dongle?

  • ELJO, how many units did you start with, and how many do you have remaining?

  • A stupid question, do you need to turn on your computer if you stream media from your computer with the wi-fi dongle?

    • yes , otherwise the hard drive in the comp will not be active to copy from

      • Oh, thanks for the clarification.

  • Can someone please provide a link to the firmware. Cheers.

      • Thanks champ! Can you please confirm that your units will ship with v1.8.2?

And some like you are just too intelligent to be wasting their time on Ozbargain.

        • I fail to see your correlation between "wasting" time on Ozbargain and intelligence.

my link was valid… just spewing that someone got in before me.

I don't know about you but i don't consider browsing though Ozbargain a waste of time.

          • @wisc: I meant it in the way that you need to spend your time looking for bargains - rather that looking for opportunities to make 'smart' comments at people's expense. All the best.

  • STOCK UPDATE: ONLY 2 UNITS LEFT! THEY WILL SELL WITHIN 30 MINS AT THE MOST.

We are working to secure more from the distributor at this price, but until further notice, there are only 2 left.

    • +1

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE… WE'VE SECURED EXTRA UNITS! Feel free to order away.

  • Oh, I just read that the wireless dongle is only WEP capable, so unless there has been an update since http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1160909&r…
I'm not going to turn my WLAN into target just for this. Good deal on price though.

  • The price keeps showing up as $214.40. What's wrong?

    • Have you selected it with a Hard Drive/Extended Warranty/HDMI/Express Shipping?

  • No. Do I have to?

    • prob you didn't change the options to none for all of them, they are automatically put to 'yes please' add more profit to us thanks'
change the drop down box values

    • You can select whatever you like. If you have certain combinations of optional extras selected, and then hit update price, it will give you the total price that you will pay for the combination.
Selecting the standard warranty, regular courier (free) and no other extras will give you the $89.95 price.

  • i bought one last December when it was $99.95, hd channels come through fabulously over hdmi, nice remote with glow in dark buttons, there's a fan in base to keep unit cool, on the downside playback formats are lightweight, most formats covered except MKV and WMV, oh and as mickdig said not being able to playback one file whilst recording a new one, which is kinda strange since it does have time shift capability(current recording only), maybe next firmware update can fix that? the HD tuner & being able to upgrade the HDD were the clinchers for me, so for the $ it's worth it mostly

  • Can someone pls clarify if i can play the tv shows captured to the installed hard drive simply by plugging in to a computer via the usb ( eg record tv shows at home , then unplug unit to take to work and plug in directly to computer via USB to watch the shows on work computer ? Also, if i capture Foxtel signal via the AV input , can i then access those files (via a home network ) to watch in another room ? Am trying to find an alternative to paying for foxtel multiroom 2nd IQ or IQ2. Have already paid $200+ for a 5.8Ghz av sender/receiver unit from Jaycar which has not strong enough signal strength to make the distance upstairs to down .
    thanks

    • Yes to the first question, you can take it to work and play what you recorded… although your boss may not like it :)

For the second part of the question, you will need a unit a little more advanced than this. You can stream from a network storage device to the 2230 via the wireless dongle, but unfortunately it cannot go the other way and act as the network storage device.

  • It's a shame it doesn't play mkv and h264. Otherwise would've ordered it.

  • jmg146 - How quick will an order go out? I only ask as I placed an order for one and then family member wanted me to order one for them. I have two separate order numbers for 2 separate addresses and now decided I want to just get them both sent to same address. Account option will no longer let me edit the delivery address.

    • Hi toughjudge,
If you send an email before lunch time tomorrow to [email protected] indicating the 2 order numbers and which address you'd like them sent to, then we'll get it fixed up for you.

      • Many Thanks jmg146 I have sent the email now.

  • Hi Everyone,
due to an unexpectedly massive response, this super save special is now sold out. The price has to be put back up to $139.95.

We do have a special going however on the 6640N, the flagship Dvico PVR with twin tuners, 1080p Full HD capabilities, embedded wireless and ethernet networking and more!

We have a limited number of these available at the low price of $375 (about $25 less than anywhere else online, $50 less than the usual price).

    • It's a shame it sold out so quickly. I was about to get it tonight for my sibling, but looks like the the price has increased by $50.

I have a unit myself, and I can vouch that this is an awesome little PVR/Media player to have. Wished I had bought it earlier in the arvo during work.

  • I bought one of these for the sister in law when COTD had them, great little unit and they had no problem using it. Plays all the divx etc I tossed at it.

  • +1

    Extend the offer pls! :(

  • -2

    sold out crap

    Price back up to $139.95

just a bait to sell other stuff

    • What are you talking about? This deal was posted a week ago. You can't expect them to sell for such a low price forever.

  • OK Eljo, when are you going to come good on your promise? We were all told these were going to be shipped the same day they were ordered. My friend just called and was told that they would now be shipped on Friday as they didn't actually have any in stock when the deal was made! Is this your normal mode of operation?

    • If you have a look at the above comments, we had a number of units (actually 20) available originally, which were sold out very quickly and have already been dispatched. We then had to arrange more items (a further 30) from the supplier to be able to extend the deal. It is these extra pieces we are waiting for, which were slightly delayed by the fact there was a public holiday. As soon as we have them we will be shipping them immediately.
Also so you know, the original sale indicated that shipping was to be within 24-72 business hours. We always try our best to get them our orders dispatched within the first 24 hours, but sometimes there is a delay. Whilst we acknowledge and appologise that some of the units were delayed in this instance, at no stage did we indicate they would be shipped the same day.

      • I ordered mine at 11:45 - 10 minutes after your sale began.

        • That should mean you will have yours soon then i should think.

  • Just got mine yesterday. Wow this thing is small!

  • Guys, contrary to what we've been told by ELJO, these all ship with firmware version 1.5.4 (dated Dec 2008!).

Upgrading to the new firmware (version 1.8.2 dated Aug 1009) is a must!

If you don't think you need to upgrade, just go to setup and do a disk check - your unit froze, right?

The upgrade offers a stack of fixes and enhancements.

So disappointed that ELJO told me on the phone that the units come straight from the factory and have the latest firmware loaded 100%.

    • +1

      hi,
we appologise for the misinformation. It was an assumption made that the factory would have shipped it out with the latest firmware already installed. Obviously they didnt, which clearly looks bad on us.

Here's the link to download the new firmware:
      http://www.tvix.co.kr/ENG/download/default.aspx?act=RD&pSeri…

Here's a link to instructions for it's installation:
      http://www.tvix.co.kr/ENG/faq/default.aspx?bserial=0&act=RD&…

Again, sorry for any inconvenience caused. Have a good day.

      • Thanks for the honesty. I bought 2 of these, and the firmware upgrade on one failed at 70%. I panicked, as the thing just stopped working. A bit of googling led me to a 'safe mode' firmware upgrade which then did the trick. All good now.

        • How long did it take you to do the firmware upgrade in safe mode? Mine has been going for the last 10 min and nothing is happening.

  • Around 3 minutes.

    • Thanks. I had some issues, but it seems all good now,

  • Does anyone's fan actually spin? Mine seems to run VERY hot, and the fan never spins up!

    • It spins most of the time for mine.

      • Does the fan (base) have an LED, coz mine doesn't but the manual says it does!

  • Your problem may be a result of incorrect insertion of the player into the base (the player supplies power to the base). Once you place the player on top of the base you must slide it(to the left I think). Give it a go and see if it works.

    • It doesn't slide. It just sort of clips in when you push it down. Are you telling me it should slide as well?

      • Yes. It needs to slide so that power can be distributed from the main unit to base.

  • Thank you.

  • I finally got around to connecting this to my TV today, and when I turned it on, the screen would just flicker. I could make out the OSD from the TViX, but I could not find a way to stop the flickering. This is on an old tube TV by the way. Has anyone else had this problem and knows how to fix it?

  • Hi, I bought a 2230 but have heaps of problems with it, main being it keeps losing sound and needs re-booting, very annoying. Sent it back to OO and got a new which was stuffed on arrival. It makes a ticking sound which is really annoying. Anyone else have this problem- and know a solution? Cheers

  • Who is OO? The only moving parts in the unit are the hard drive and the fan (in the base). Is the noise still there if you remove the HD and leave the main unit off the base?

    • OO.com.au, it was part of a package. It flashes red and ticks at the same time, previous one didn't. Took the HD out and its the same whether attached to the base or not. At work our IT guy looked at it and doesn't know where its coming from, and he's pretty switched on. Any suggestions?

      • Not sure about the problems, but this was a deal from Eljo, not OO ( http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/19989 )
Hopefully you're able to work out what's wrong with it :)

      • Really don't know. Have you flashed/upgraded the firmware?

  • I can't do anything to it, I plug it in and it just flashes and ticks, I don't even think it boots up, can't even get to where I check the firmware. Can't get a response from OO (where I bought it from), seems they only wanted to deal with the issue once. Am very peeved at this stage!

  • Best thing to do is post the issue on http://www.alsotech.com.au/forum/
This is the official Dvico Distributor's forum. Their engineers check it regularly. They will hopefully be able to help. Otherwise, you could try their tech support team (go to their contact us page for details). They should be able to help.

  • Hi, cheers for that but I've already contacted Alsotech and they've never heard of this problem. I've been in contact with OO and have now returned it - 3rd time lucky?!
