  • Good start to 2016. Thanks Trent!

Lol Trent bargain hunter 2015 and 2016

  • +2

Great work. Even manages to post great deals whilst intoxicated. Happy New Year Trent.

  • +4

If I buy a new TV this year, it will be all your fault Trent! Happy New Year

The mrs keeps saying we don't need a new TV, but at these prices, I don't know how long I can resist!

Still have a 42" FHD Panasonic Plasma ($1,500 Jan 2010)

    Wouldn't mind a 55" UHD.

Keep up the great work :)

    • +7

I'm with ya on this - difference is that I have a 42" NEC from 2005 that just doesn't want to break down goddamit

      • +4

Nice. It has served you well! Prior to the plasma, I had another Panasonic for over 10 years, 80cm flat screen CRT, was still working when I put it out onto the street about 2 years ago. Couldn't give it away. Cost me $2,600 in 1999 at JB Hi-Fi (HN wouldn't budge at $3,200).

      • +2

with you too Willy O - I've got a sharp aquos 32" from around 2004/5 - a smudge over $2k with the wall bracket - still going strong.

just think no usb no hdmi no browsers - one dvi port - all the mod cons

an update might just bring me into the tech age.

        merry new year to all

        • +1

Strange for it to have DVI and not HDMI. Not really a standard input for a TV.

        • @Agret: Yeah i guess the early lcd's were seen as monitors so its handy to plug in a computer, its the main tv and often gets left on to ward off prowlers. it just keeps on keeping on ….

    • +1

same here , we have an old Pana plasma from about 10 year ago. not even FHD just HD. Wifey says no seeing the TV still works fine I guess.
But a 55inch UHD is calling , even 50inch would prob be perfect in our room (and would look huge compared to the existing 42inch) - the big thing is the Firefox OS compared to others with Android os, don't wanna be caught out with apps not working after a few years.

      • +1

wouldn't worry about it because by then the latest android TV box/chromecast/etc will be much better than what is in your outdated and now underpowered TV anyway.

        • yeah, i guess, but it was only recently that Sony Panasonic Samsung etc TVs only a few years old that their apps stopped working because of changes by the providers (Google etc). No update available. two years is not long for the smarts to stop working.
So is android os or firefox os worth worrying about. (prob not as I dont think I would really use the smarts anyway)

        • +1

Updates on Android TV are dependant on SONY. If SONY stops updates then it will be as useless as all the other smart TVs like Samsung lg etc who never bother to update after the 1st year or two. SONY is well known to abandon updates so don't keep your hopes up

Future is in smart tv extensions like Chromecast roku etc. Dont worry so much about smart tv features

    • +2

Yup got the same one in 2008/09 still going strong lol damn thing….

  • Any tech gurus able to enlighten me with a review of the UA55J6200?
Itching to buy a new TV.

Guessing its not future proof with 4K, but at $996 does it matter?

    • +2

I think it will be a long way til we have much more 4k content to watch (live tv are still HD at best, still to catch to FHD)
and you are not too fussy about quality, I think smasung is good brand.
you are right just <$1000. who cares if it is not future proof. Upgrade to a new one and probably with better features/cheaper… in 3-5 years (as they tend not to last that long these days)

    • Get it. Came out on top in my research, I got the 60" though.

No 4k content now anyway. For that price I would have gone the 55".

    • +1

Think of it as $1000 that could've gone towards an OLED.

      • hardly apples for apples. and besides, oleds price point is at least 2-2.5x this one.

        • He means if you are planning on it only lasting a few years just "cause it's under $1000" you may as well just not spend the money now and instead get an OLED in a few years when they are cheaper/more mature

        • @Agret: my mistake, thought he was implying i should go get an oled right now instead.

  • +1

The Samsung TV is $999 at Bing Lee but the EBAY10 code no longer works

  • Ok … the plan was to buy a 64 4K branded TV in 2015 for $2000. Didn't happen … it's 2016 now so the limit is $1750. ;-)
Trent always tempts with great deals … but with that plan I will never buy one and save lots of money …

    • +1

well you could have bought a Panasonic 65inch 4K for under $2000 in 2015 (but really you just didnt want to :) ). This was available for $1996 at end of Dec. and still available.
      https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/hd-televisio…

      • +2

Yep … you are probably right. Didn't see an 4K Panasonic under 2000 in 65inch last year. This was the first I saw. But hey … you are probably right. My 50inch 7 year old Samsung Plasma is still going (but starting to bleed red on the bottom a bit which is only visible on a full black screen) and I rather pay off the house first before buying more consumer goods.

I am also still not sure if 4K is really worth it. I will watch 99% in FullHD (or even a bit SD free to air). Seeing all the TVs in the shops I don't see much difference )(except the OLED LG pictures which look fantastic).

        • +1

yeah, if the TV is working fine why bother, even if you wait another year something better will be around.
Son now has a ps4 and then i'm thinking a better TV/another toy but we dont really need one.
my thinking though is I usually start looking and say this model for $2000 in a year a similar model is $1500 but a better model is now $2000 so I am still looking at spending $2000.

        • +1

          @PVA:

That's the whole thing. You don't need it but would be nice. Material things. All my TVs so far where around $2000 … the old CRT … the 32 inch … the 50 inch … and now it's 65inch. The price does not really go any cheaper when you buy the latest technology.

More More More … but sometimes it makes sense to upgrade and bring your technology up to date.

The Panasonic 65inch looks great. I just miss a few reviews of it. Even at that price I want to buy a good TV and there is not much information out there.

        • @mini_wombat:
the 65inch is their lowest end though - 640, then 700, then 740 then 800 series.

        • +1

@PVA: It is run by firefox which is good :)

        • +1

          @TRENT86:
Trent, thats my big concern (prob unfounded). Android based TV seem like apps will always work as can't you update the apps?, Firefox OS who knows.
It wasnt that long ago when a bunch of brands had the apps stop working becuase of for examble Google changing the Youtube api. Those TVs were only a few years old and no update to fix it. https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6098135?p=yt_devic…

        • @PVA: Hmm dunno, might have to read bit more on that, as far as I'm aware most apps on the Android TV'S Will update automatically and some you will have to agree too but I will read more on this

        • @PVA:

I would worry most about picture quality (esp. when it is their lower end model). I haven't seen it in store and can't say anything about it. The Smarts you can always upgrade cheap with chromecast, fire, appleTV, roku, … but the picture quality will stay as it is (or get worse ;-). At $2000 I would love the best possible picture and would not worry about the smarts.

It's CES next week … so maybe lots of new models announced?

        • @TRENT86:
i've just read a few reviews comparing android tv os vs firefox tv os on panasonic and it seem the firefox is a clear winner. maybe i should have no concerns.

        • @mini_wombat: it makes perfect sense what you say. can always use our ps4 or like you say another smart box - heck, I have Foxtel so prob wont use the smarts anyway.
ces next week, maybe thats why TVs are on super special right now.

        • +1

@PVA: Ive has a smart TV Since god prob the beginning of smart TV'S & Used it like 4 times lol, although if I had Netflix subscription I would use that

        • @TRENT86: yeah, you are prob right and I am over thinking things as usual.

  • +1

Would TGG price match with their 120% offer for these deals?

    • +1

nope ~ you would need to buy at their price first ~ then rock up the next day and get the 20% back

      • Any risks of doing this?

        • done it a bunch of times.. some times on the same day :) they give me the evil eyes but its their policy to do so…

        • @blehgg: Ok, going to give it a try :o

  • There any reason to go the Panasonic 50" over the Samsung? Bearing in mind probably not going to change this tv for a while.

    • +1

My understanding is that the Panasonic has more "high end" features over the Samsung. I'm not fully across TV technologies, but it has local dimming which is said to improve contrast and make blacks darker.

The Panasonic also does 3d if that's of interest to you.

Probably best to view both in person and see which looks better to you.

      • Thanks, appreciate that!

    • Samsung is recommended by Choice

Can any of the happy owners comment on Samsung model UA55J6200AW. Found the following review on web.

    http://www.productreview.com.au/p/samsung-series-6-j6200/m/u…

    • +1

You should really try to see it in store if you want to get it. and see it for yourself (as that review/feedback is only from one person, but sounds very disappointing from Samsung…)

  • Can't believe how cheap TV's have gone! I bought a samsung curved 65inch a few months back that was on oz bargain for $2450 and I thought that was a bargain!

    • +1

I remember early last year Gerald Harvey scarring everyone to believe tellies will be 20%+ more cause of the aud and this is as good as it gets.

      • He's just trying to encourage people to be happy with his prices lol

    • 4K screens are entering mass production which is why you are seeing prices drop. Also new comers like Hisense and TCL are starting to produce quality panels at aggressively low prices so competition getting tight.

Even Japanese players like SONY and Panasonic who have high cost base are starting to cut prices.

Any feedback on this, cant find any good reviews online

    • says it's new release so prob not too much info on it

Do Samsung TVs still suffer from time lag/buffering when looking up the TV guide?

    • yep, they do. At least this this model 55" still does.
It's a very big let-down on a tv this size/price, as it affects the usage every day!

    • I've got one of those old as Samsung's and it does It with mine, but it also does it with my Panasonic, with my Samsung I never use guide I use the channel list function which is same thing but you view each channels list 1 by 1 and scroll through and it's immediate and fast :)

    • They still suffer from that based on my testing, another common issue is Samsung suffer from judder in movies when watched in original mode without the smooth motion 100hz option. This is a common complaint with Samsung.

Yeah price beating, I;m amazed gg haven't beaten it by $1 which Is the usual thing that happens, prob by the end of today they will

    • I can think of a few reasons why I would pay a dollar more not to shop at hardly normal, not coz I'm a professional or anything.

  • thanks op. bought one this morning from jb hifi prahran. quite happy with the purchase. hooked it up to amazon fire tv stick and its looking good.

Make sure you register you're product online so it's nice & easy for Warranty Purposes :)

If anyone has any experience with these Pansonic 4K tvs for gaming I'd be curious to know how they go with input lag? Was originally looking at just the Sony 65" FHD due console's 1080p limitations but with the Panasonic 65" 4k being only $100 more than the Sony seems potentially a better option? Can't find anything on Rtings or displaylag.com Thanks

    • Id also be keen to understand the lag, also does this set run plex natively? Is there better longevity in the sony platform as its running google? Im a samsung owner currently its its been a great set (PS64F8500AM) one of last Plasma's they made however they have changed their platform 2x since this and no further work being done on the legacy one I run.

    • +1

The cx700 has 38 ms of input lag measured here: http://www.flatpanelshd.com/review.php?id=1431346125&subacti… and elsewhere. Pretty middle of the road if you compare it to other TVs on RTings, but better than the J6300 according to them (most similar model to the aussie J6200). The CX640 probably has 55 ms of lag like this one: http://www.flatpanelshd.com/review.php?subaction=showfull&id….

I've picked up the 50CX700a, been waiting a long time for a deal on a good TV around $1000. The Samsung was cheaper during the 15% off ebay sale.

      • where did you see the Samsung cheaper in the sale? I can't see it posted anywhere cause I posted that many TV'S During that sale

        • Actually that was my mistake, sorry. I had written down the price for a refurbished unit. Brand new it would have been over $1000 in the ebay sale.

  • The Sony KDL75W850C disappeared?

  • Keen to hear some comments on the 65" Panasonic, particularly for games and sports

    • Think you're best bet m8 is to go instore and have a view of them as there are basically no reviews on this tv

  • Would a 65 inch fit in a suv?

    • 55 inch was a tight fit in my CRV with the back seat folded.

Not sure if the idea has ever been mooted on here but I like the idea of a donation button to reward regular contributers such as Trent86, Easternculture, Tightarse and others. To think how much coin, not to mention time these guys have saved me in sourcing bargains, it's a serious credit to them. If everybody that benefited from a deal could voluntarily offer up a buck or 2 it could possibly even incentivise more bargains to be posted. Thoughts?

    • Because "money is what moves community"?

Sorry if I didn't quote Gaben correctly. Reminded me the logic that Gaben presented. Maybe some forms of monetary incentives may make the community run better. That said more than often money brings problems.

  • +1

FYI, just bought the Samsung 55" from JB for $967 👍

    • damn it ~ tried to haggle ~ but they wouldnt budge… grr

  • Hmm…i bonded with the guy…but he just looked at the pda and said he could go that price. Then I got the 4 year warranty for $1020.

    • Post receipt? Might get this TV.
