Telstra Sony E4G $89 @ Coles

350

These have been $99 previously at DSE, Auspost, Kmart and even Coles too.

Good budget phone which supports lots of bands on both 3G & 4G. Does not have NFC though. Our model is the E2053 - specs.

Bought one myself last month @ $99 from DSE. Unlocked from eBay or bagman for ~$20.

Don't forget 5gb or 7.6gb if activated before straya day.

Sorry I can't find a website link. But it is in all Coles stores (here in Sydney anyway).

EDIT: Although it's a 4.7" screen, it's more like 4.5" cos there are no dedicated capacitive hardware buttons on the phone so they pop up along the bottom of the screen instead.

Is it really running on kitkat?

Harvey norman has the Telstra 4GX Buzz for $63. dick smith was able to price match it for my mum. Coles have it too so they might price match as well. It comes with Android 5.0 which is a lot more up to date than kitkat. unlockit.codes can unlock it for <$5 . http://www.harveynorman.com.au/catalogsearch/result/?q=4gx

    • Yeah KK. But hopefully Sony will provide and update for it.

I got the Buzz with the Monster headphones too :)

    • +3

BTW the Buzz is a really great phone. I bought one to use when I go running - the iPhone 6 Plus is just way too big - but totally surprised at how good the Buzz is. Totally worth $63.

      • Yeah it's my GPS and hotspot now. It's such a better GPS than my Note 3!

    • +1

Looks like a good phone for my daughter, cheap little Android smart phone…..anything cheaper that will suit a teenage girl?

      • not a smart phone but nokia 3310

    • The buzz is a nice phone, but I'd take the E4g over it for an extra $20. Better screen, camera, and performance. Also I prefer kitkat to early lollipop version with memory leaks.

  • This or the Optus Prepaid Lumia 640 for $99?

    • The 640 is a better camera specs wise, but yeah it's a Windows phone. It really comes down to your personal preference between the two systems.

      • +phone* oops

    • +3

I'll probably cop some shit for this but honestly I'd go with the lumia. In my experience at the lower end price point they just outperform similarly spec'd androids. Altough if you hoarde apps then Android might be the way to go, WP is catching up slowly but its still the (relatively) new kid on the block.

      • +2

I agree whilst i hate Windows phone i have owned a low end lumia and on the same hardware it will definitely be snappier than android. And i love Android

      • +6

The Lumia would definitely outperform Android on the same specs in terms of being snappy/responsive.

I really liked the Lumia 640 as a device. Amazingly well made at the $99 pricepoint. But I just couldn't overcome the loss in productivity with all of the lacking apps. That and I handle nearly all my email via Gmail and Google intentionally gimps it on WP.

I really wanted to love the Lumia and WP because it was such a great price for a beautiful handset, but I couldn't get my banking app, couldn't do Gmail, found the maps alternatives not as good, and just got sick of the whole process of "Oh, that's right I need <insert app here>" and it not being available.

Awesome device, but the WP ecosystem (or lack thereof) just killed my productivity. If you don't rely on that many apps, and don't rely on Google Apps, then I'd definitely recommend it.

After owning quite a few Lumias and using them I have found they don't always win on performance with same specs and can be significantly slower in some circumstances. Performance comes Down to the apps you use. I find a big issue with some apps on Windows mobile just they are extremely slow at responding and loading. I'm sure you seen the … Loading when you first open certain apps or when switching back. It's because many apps on Lumias are poorly optimised and are usually rarely if ever updated to improve performance. This is one of the issues with the app gap, it not only effects the number of apps available, but also the support and quality of the ones that exist. I just tested a few apps on my 930 vs zte fit comparing loading times.

          Spotify load time
          930 ~6 seconds
          Fit ~3 seconds

          Flipboard
          930 ~6 seconds
          Fit ~3 seconds

          Messenger
          930 ~5 seconds
          Fit ~ 3 seconds

Now that's comparing a vastly superior spec Windows phone against a budget android. Now there shouldn't be any scenario the last generation Windows flagship loses to a cheap budget android. Yes the UI is super smooth on Windows phone 8.1, mind you so is the UI silky smooth on my $45 zte fit. I think people see how smooth the UI is on Wp and the lovely animations but don't realise how slow some apps can take to open and run. The more you use it the more apps you'll encounter with bad performance.

      • A Lumia 532 for $29 from woollies, updated to WP10, is a great deal, if you don't have a great appetite for the latest apps.

        • Is that in tomorrows catalogue?

      What's wrong with this phone?

      • -6

It's a general statement. One phone is pretty much the same as another. They make calls. The rest is nothing to dedicate much attention to.

        • +6

phone calls are the last thing i care about in my smart phone. I consider it much closer to a handheld computer. Your use case is obviously much different but i suspect you are in the minority.

  • +1

Comes with 1,000 flybuys points too, worth about $5 Coles credit.

  • Once unlocked, can the Sony be used with Amaysim (Optus)?

I've heard that some unlocked Telstra phones don't work properly on Optus…

  • +3

Say no to KitKat! Die die Holo, long live Material!

  • Good Phone, better than the Optus Alcatel Pixi 4.5, but then again that phone is almost 3x cheaper after incentives (If you know how to cash it out)…

The upside to this phone is that is has a better screen and camera, the rest is pretty much the same, except it doesn't have Lollipop unlike the Alcatel.

Alcatel Pixi also cheaper to unlock for those looking for something better than Zte Fit Smart, i.e. Quadband 3G

  • +1

The camera is a LOT better than the Alcatel. 2 Day battery life. Been using mine (as a replacement for a Y550) for about a month now, cant complain. 4G speeds have been fantastic everywhere I have been.

Sony allegedly 'may' release a Marshmallow update. I prefer the features of Kitkat over Lolipop, so I was glad it had KitKat. From what I have read some Kitkat features will come back in Marshmallow.

Pretty sure our model has NFC. GSM Arena is about as accurate as Chinese 'Rolax'. Plenty of other sites list the 2053, or whatever the Aussie one is as having NFC. I think the GSM arena is just an old listing. Ours is a 2nd gen E4G and I think it has all the goodies. The Sony Apps on mine has NFC options, but I have no idea how to test it?

Performance seems comparable to the Buzz (I bought it for my parents), but with a better screen and native support for all networks (once unlocked). I believe you may be able to change the network bands on the Buzz as well via the hidden service menu. But have no need since they are on Telstra.

Negatives - I hate keyboards with a space bar right next to the home button, hit home all the time by accident. The home/ back buttons etc chew up screen space. You cant remove the Google bar at the top to place apps / calendar there instead. If you remove the Google bar, it just becomes dead space.

At $89 it has to be the best bang for buck now the Buzz doesn't come with Headphones.

    • I hate keyboards

Why aren't you using Google Keyboard?

The home/ back buttons etc chew up screen space.

Root it and install LMT Launcher for PieControls.

You cant remove the Google bar

      Install Nova Launcher.

      • Isn't the Google Keyboard the same? The Keyboard on my old Huawei had a row of characters (? . etc) under the keyboard. Any ideas which keyboard has this layout?

You can turn the phone sideways, but not all my apps support the Landscape keyboard.

Cheers for the other tips, what do you use for rooting the E4G?

    • The mtk chip out performs the s410, mainly in Gpu performance. Another thing this phone has over other cheap phones is dual band wifi. This would be the first phone that has sold for under $100 locally I would have as a daily driver. The screen is actually quite good, the camera is usable in bright light, performance is good and battery life is great too. Yeah it does have nfc, and it's reasonably light for a budget phone. Sony Walkman is a nice addition also.

  • Paid about $150 for this phone, was buggy so returned promptly. Expected better from big name brand.

    • +2

      What bugs specifically?

  • I hear these handset has some serious flaws.

    • +2

O rly nao? Specifically what and from who did you supposedly hear this from?

Maybe you're thinking about the M5.

      • +1

My bad it is the m5.

        • E4G has touchscreen issue when it 1st came out, the Aug/Oct firmware already fixed it.

Most in stock already upgraded with latest firmware.

    • Like what? I haven't come across any yet? But would like to know?

  • "Don't forget 5gb or 7.6gb if activated before straya day."
is this just for the first month or every month?

    • First month only, and you have to activate on the freedom plus prepaid plan

  • Non-removable Li-Ion 2300 mAh battery.
    No sale.

  • Anyone else tried the Hungry Jacks app on the E4G. It doesn't work for me? The shake bit doesn't respond. First world problem I know , but want to know if it is just my phone, or all E4gs.

  • Just picked one up today at Coles Fletcher. Advertised at $149 but still selling for $89. I didn't want it for anything except being able to read on a larger screen than my iPhone 5S, especially since I'm in the throes of switching to Google Play books (sync can't be beat). It will do until. I can't afford the new iPhones, but I want/need iMessage. So, this is perfect. Charging now, hope it all it appears to be :)

  • Did any one actually unlock it? which service did you use?

    • i used this from ebay as i had a $25 voucher from amaysim and there was cashrewards cashback too. got a working unlock code within a few hours.

    • i'm trying bagman's website. Still under process (1 day so far)

      https://www.unlockit.codes/

      • Bagman normally is fast, not sure what happen this time. But the webpage stated 2-5 days though….

        • Got it today, seems to work fine. will check tonight

  • No USB Msc support in latest firmware (ie you can't view movies when connected to a TV USB port). Can effect some car audio systems. Fix it Sony..or it won't be fit for purpose.

  • Does anyone know if this deal is still on by any chance?

Edit: Took a look at their catalogue, deal seems to be ending today. :(
