Nice thanks. Time to defrag all the cheap SSDs I bought over last year with the help of OzBargain. :)

    • +7

lol you made me cringe, to anyone else reading don't ever defrag an SSD!

      • -5

Why not? it will make the write and read speed faster

        • +4

Only on a HDD (platter based mechanical drive) will it do that. SSD is a completely electronic memory based drive it's the same write and read speed over the entire drive. No defrag required on an SSD.

        • +4

Furthermore, you burn the write cycles and will prematurely trash your ssd.

          @hollykryten:

Further -aren't you meant to not defrag large HDD's?

        • @useful defragging an SSD won't make it read or write any faster. To make an ssd stay fast you must create the partition to be 20% smaller than the total drive space so you leave 20% unallocated. Then your OS will automatically use the TRIM command to optimise it.

@nakedposition: nah if it's larger then you are more likely to have larger free space and it will be able to defrag it easier with less read/write operagions

        • @Agret:

You know I was joking right lol

This one here is always free https://www.piriform.com/defraggler

Yes I recommend Defraggler as the best free option but O&O defrag is better for severe fragmentation that defraggler can't handle. I've had defraggler only be able to get certain drives down to 22% fragmented using the non-quick defrag yet O&O defrag can get it down further, maybe works better on drives with less free space or something I'm not sure exactly.

Is this software better than ashampoo one? I keep getting errors on the ashampoo disk defrag.

    • +1

Having never used the Ashampoo one I can't say for certain but I've never gotten errors using this software.

    thanks.

this a great program for older HDD drives

  • Whats the difference between version 18 that is free and version 19 that is paid?

The free one i loved seems dead.

    or jkdefrag

    • The version number. It's like office how there aren't many new features, just UI tweaks. There's only so much you can do with a defragging algorithm.
