  • Doesn't play audio tapes :(

    • Might as well ask for vinyl albums too…

  • why do they still bother with discs? I want one without disc player.

  • May I ask why those things are selling this day when default units have the same features. It is a big improvement if upgrade from default unit to touch screen unit, dvd player. Etc…

not everyone is driving a less than 5 year old car.

    • +5

Sound quality of this will kill most of the stock car units. Also you have 3 RCA preouts so you can hook up to amp or subs.

    • Handsfree bluetooth calling.

You can make your car fully sick bro…

I think that the maker of the default unit in my car did their community service by having the kids up at the local special school do the user interface design. This unit has all the same features, and about thirty fewer buttons, than the one in my car!

  • I have a older version of this in my car, front constantly changing colours is a bit annoying sometimes

Can be turned off by setting to a single colour.

    • +1

Yes it can be switched off

I have the 4150BT, which is one model down in the same series, and it's quite capable. There are only minor differences including single vs. multicolour display and possibly one more RCA output on the 5150BT.

Overall I think this is a very good price for what you get. The cheapest I've seen the 4150BT is about $140 for slightly less, and that not for a while.

This unit will have much power as you're going to get in a head unit, and if you want more it has multiple RCAs for an external amp and/or sub-woofer. It has multiple inputs and can be remote controlled using an app from your phone. Bluetooth can be set to pair and ring even when the audio is off and will switch to BT audio for phone calls automatically where earlier Sony units wouldn't. The Bluetooth pairing is excellent. It has an external microphone input on the back and comes with the mic, which seems good quality - I have a 2003 Camry and the external Mic was dead easy to install.

The only problems I've had are minor. It's a tiny bit complicated - the buttons are slightly small for things like changing input, particularly when driving and especially for the Wife Approval Factor. If you set up your phone to control it that could help fix some of the complication, although using the phone to control the radio might get you in trouble with the law for touching your phone while driving. The settings have lots of options but again a little complicated and poorly explained in the thin book if you dig deep. As far as I know there is no ability to switch off functions like Pandora if you're not using them, so you have to pass them when choosing inputs - can't remember which brand but I've seen other head units where you can turn things off.

I have the 4150BT as well, which I paid 175 for on special. so 138 is an absolute bargain for this model.

      Also it plays FLAC.

  • What does a car stereo cost to install approx?

    • +1

      $60-200..Depends the place you choose

      • +1

Free if you do it yourself, don't need a fascia kit and don't mind splicing into your stock harness. Maybe $15 for a vehicle specific harness to join to the one that comes with the HU or $30 for vehicle to ISO + ISO to Sony.

        • I found it quite easy to install. It had all the right holes for my Camry and then I just got the Toyota to ISO and ISO to Sony connectors plus a facia/double-din adaptor kit for a 30 minute install, though the microphone probably took another 30.

  • Hey guys, I'm keen to buy this today, but about to take off in a plane and wondering if anyone knows of any other good deals for a new head unit and/or speakers?

I need to update my Tarago's old cassette deck unit and speakers!!!

    • This will be a good upgrade from the cassette deck. You can even add a sub woofer and hook up an amp. Also it depends how much you want to spend. This is a good price for what you are getting.

      • I ordered this and just waiting to pick it up (Fastway Courier is so annoying… I would actually say is crap)

        Hoping to install tomorrow!

Would you recommend upgrading the wiring? I wonder if I would get a big increase in sound quality by putting in new wiring etc. I plan to install new speakers by the way.. I have a friend donating a sub woofer, just need to get an amp and speakers.

        • Might as well mate. You will get everything brand new and you will not have any problems for a while. Pretty sure you need new wiring anyways for the subs, amp and if you get 6 x 9's etc..

Great price, been after a new HU for a while. Definitely wouldn't pay $274, but a steal at $138.
    Cheers OP

  • So it's also a tuner but no mention (unless I missed it) of what bands (AM/FM/Digital). I'm guessing no digital?

    • +1

It has a tuner but I don't think it's digital HERE

      • +1

        Definitely got AM/FM/SW.

It's got the digital readout for radio station names, but I don't think that means it's fully digital, just some digital info embedded in the analog, like the old teletext on TV.

It does have excellent reception, as good as anything I've every experienced. For instance in good conditions it will pick up Sydney stations clearly from Newcastle and vice versa, and can always pick up Gosford stations from Newcastle, except for one black spot near Jesmond/Lambton where it goes a bit quiet and where most other radios I've used drop out completely.
