I noticed that the best prices are always the items with only 1 size and possibly 1 unit remaining, otherwise the prices are adjusted according to discount % every time they have a different "take x% off" sale. Picked up zanerobe cargo pants (last pair), ziggy jeans (6 left) and academy trackies (last pair) for $56 total.
How do you know the stock quantity?
I just test them by adding them a few times to cart. If the item only has like 1 or 2 sizes left, it's highly probable that you can only add 1 to your cart.

I ended up spending $300 somehow.
They jack the prices up when they have a % off sale. I questioned them about it and got two responses. The first said there had been an error (in regard to pricing some items for the boxing day 40% off sale) which they amended, and told me prices were subject to change. The second email just reiterated their policy that prices are subject to change at any time.
Dodgy, which is a shame because I've bought a lot from SurfStitch in the past.
This is true, but I believe that in some cases it isn't purely because they're adding a discount (False advertising).
Part of the reason is also because they restock different sizes. I bought a $50 (really it was $40 because of a 20% off but that doesn't matter), and after it went up to $70 I saw that they had restocked the small size. This also happened to some zanerobe pants which I bought for $35 a month back in 30 (2nd last size I believe), which are currently at $70 with multiple sizes remaining. And as another comment states, i'm pretty sure that the discounts on items go up, relative to the amount of product left.
Of course, this is still speculation and yes, it is still pretty shady.
