Damn this is a good price, really tempted to change over to this but it maybe a bit too big. Such a shame stores don't have display stock so I can have a look.

    • just walk into any voda/optus/telstra store?

      • +1

        None stock the Premium

        • -1

          Not yet, but they will

        • @RoostersMan:

Got inside info? I've been to all 3 about 5 times over the last 3 months and all keep telling me they likely won't be stocking it.

        • @RoostersMan: Oh didn't realize that.

I've played with it at the Sony Kiosk in Chatswood, Sydney. Like others have mention 4k isn't activated most of the time. I much prefer paying ~$600 for a Z5 instead of the premium.

        • I believe Optus posted on their FB that the Z5P will be in stock soon. Don't know about any dates

        • @XeKToReX: There are no plans for Telstra or Optus to release the phone. Not sure about Vodafone.

        • @mg_k:

4K is just the bonus, I'm in it for the Chrome. Such a great design.

        • @crazycs: Been following the posts (including yours) on the WP thread also, so yeah, I wasn't expecting anything lol

      • They don't have any Premium

    • I've seen one in JB Hifi at Eastland.

    • Have the normal z5 and even that's too big, not too big to use but too big for just about any pocket

  • Reviews for this phone (other than the screen) are disappointing for the price is demands.

    Pros
Bright display, easy to read under sunlight
    Dust- and water-resistant (IP68)
    Outstanding battery life

    Cons
    Camera could be better
The user interface needs a refresh
Weak speakers that lack in depth
    Bulky

    • +1

Mate it's a 23mp camera that can also shoot 4K footage, what more do you want from a phone these days.

      • +3

        One that takes good pictures.

It has no HDR mode and also just plain isn't that great compared to the iPhone. It's not just the specs on paper that matter.

        • -1

Really, comparing a Sony Xperia Z5 Premium to an iPhone? Really. Completely different types of phones. I have had my Xperia z2 for over a year and I have had absolutely no problems whatsoever with it.

          Camera - Amazing
          Screen - Great
          Battery - Pretty Good
          Toughness - Very Strong
Overall - 10x better than iPhone and my parents' Galaxy S5.

        • +2

          @RoostersMan:

W're talking about the Z5 Premium, not the Z2 Premium. There is no Z2 Premium in existence and the Z5 Premium has been out less than a year.

Also why would I not compare the high end flagship to one if its direct competitors? You're saying I can't compare two directly competing companies just because you don't personally like the other one?

        • +3

Now you are just contradicting yourself LOL - "Overall 10x better phone than iPhone" - sounds like a comparison to me.

      • source: http://www.phonearena.com/ don't shoot the messenger!

        • I won't shoot you lol but I'll believe DxO Mark for imaging review over PhoneArena (sponsored) any day. For the record, Z5 scores the highest mark over any phones:
          http://connect.dpreview.com/post/6254840659/dxomark-mobile-r…

        • -1

          @DonIsGood

No, forget dxo mark as it doesn't translate to real life photos, and look at blind test results.

Phone arena does them. Sony phones suck at blind tests.

        • @OZBargain Police: Really? If so that would be disappointing since that's all the site does.

        • @ChillBro:

Lol… But yes. That's what I do anyhow.

Why look at that, when you can let the crowd compare the same photos, vote for the best photos, without bias, through blind tests.

The dxo marks are not the best indicators, because, I think they go fully in depth with the cameras. Normal people just point and shoot.

        • exactly.. If someone wanted to be a photo guru and get the best out of a photo opportunity they would be mixing it up with an SLR. Smart phone cameras are mainly used for instinctive photography by everyday ppl.

      • +2

The hardware is good, however the software processing the photo is not comparable to Apple or Samsung.

Can't recommend any phones with snapdragon 810. The CPU gets heated up all the time. I've owned a z5 compact for months now (from z3 compact) and even for the lightest tasks (have Facebook open or just have chrome open for ozbargqin) the phone will start to stutter and the back starts to get hot. The camera app takes 3-5 seconds to launch (yeah good luck with quick snaps) and sometimes my phone will turn itself for no reason. I've tried factory reset and various other fixes but no luck. I'm hoping that the Marshmallow update will improve things but I doubt it. My Z3 compact is x1000 better than this junk. If it heats up this bad on a 720p res phone, I can only imagine it being worse on a 4k res phone (unless having more ram will miraculously fix it???)

I hope the new snapdragon fixes the heat issue instead of being an ego lifter and tries to improve the benchmark performance by absolutely cooking up the processor.

Anyway, I'd recommend wait for galaxy s7 which is set to be announced in February or other phones with new snapdragon processor.

    • +2

I can confirm this. I went back to my HTC One because the Snapdragon 810 in the Z5 Compact was such a disaster. The SECOND you put it under a mild load it overheats and becomes unusably slow. Don't even think about using it as a GPS in your car. It overheats and just stops.

And good luck opening the camera. 8 - 10 seconds wait is normal there.

      • Thanks for the info, even if it's all a bit depressing…. I have a Z2 which I've thought has been the proverbial bee's knees - very clear 'phone calls, great camera, quick, micro sd slot, and a battery that would easily last a full day and - if being a little careful - could make it to the end of day #2 without needing a top up charge. Lots of positives that way out weighed the disadvantages of things like Sony bloatware. My wife has a Z3 compact that's been great as well, although the kids sadly cracked the screen in a basketball incident…. sigh…. now is on to tempered glass screen protector #3 after the first two have prevented repeat screen smashes…. as an aside, once the screen is replaced, the water resistance is impacted even, I suspect, if Sony do it.

Anyhow, had been thinking about upgrading both handsets to the Z5 but I've heard the battery is not as good as it used to be, and the heating thing is a big turn off….

        • Z3 compact is great. Best android phone in my opinion.

        • +2

Don't upgrade to Z5. I only bought it because I was fooled by an article on how Sony fixed the snapdragon 810 heating issue with their new cooling system on the phone. Biggest load of bs. Just wait for xperia z6 or galaxy s7. I heard that there will be a micro sd card slot on S7 as well as a larger battery. Sounds promising.

      • Not only the compact, but the Z5 normal I am using, does the same thing, but not to the point of being unbearably slow, but you can feel it. Might jump boat to any upcoming new phones running the Kirin 950, Helios x20 or even Snapdragon 820… if the other specs hold up as well of course.

  • Great deal.

Now, where do I get a bargain eye surgery to get me 20/20 perfect vision ??!!?? :/

  • +1

Never broken any other phone in my life but managed to get through 3 xperia phones in a year. Random cracks, water leakage etc etc. Each time it takes about 3 months to repair and on the last one they tried to make me pay $400 for repairs. Never buying their phones again.

    • Owned a Z3 (Z3, then Z3 compact and now Z5 Compact). Same issue happened to me (there were cracks around the edges despite having a case since day 1 and the water got into my phone) and they "kindly" offered me $600 (brand new Australian stock was $700-800 then) for the fix or they'll kindly dispose the phone for free. It was very nice of them so I told them to get stuffed.

    • I have had 2 Xperia phones over the last 5 years, have dropped them both many times, including once from the front seat of a 4WD onto the road, no damage at all.

    • Want to share a different perspective. I've pretty much broken every phone I've ever owned (old slide phone, Nokia E21, Motorola Droid RAZR), but my Xperia Z1 has lasted 2 years and still performs perfectly (after being treated like trash). Will definitely purchase their phones again.

    • Sony repairs is pretty bad. Cracked glass is very common if I was to pay 1k for a phone I would go for Apple. And if its android I expect to pay only half price of that

  • Is this the dual sim version ?

  • FYI Single sim model is e6853 and dual is e6883

  • Hi Store rep - can you please confirm who will look after warranty of the product ? Also, tax invoice provided ? Thanks

    • +1

      Australia Stock, not grey import.

      In the description

      • Sony store rep is saying its grey import. So who will look after warranty of the product please ?

        • He's a bullshiter then. MSY don't sell grey imports. Especially not after their $250,000 fine in 2011.

        • +3

          @cDNA:

+1 How would a Sony Store rep (most likely a franchised store) know whether MSY are selling grey stock or not?

        • +3

@crazycs: So they throw random accusations to others who sells it cheaper than them?

        • @cDNA:

Thanks ! So, will Sony look after warranty of this product ?

        • @mg_k: It's been done before, refer to Whirlpool threads on Sony products for more information.

    • they did in the title..

    • +7

OP clearly states Aus stock.. If you didn't notice that then you most likely wont notice the 4K display compared to 1080p :P

    • Seriously, you're expecting the MSY rep to reply?

These are the same guys that don't ever answer phones.

They post their ad, and disappear.

  • -1

How do we check that its Aust stock ? I mean, of course we should believe everything we read and hear

    • You'd get an original Australian charger in there, grey stock doesn't come with the sad face plug, usually only an adapter.
I don't think msy would wanna lie, it's not worth destroying their reputation.

  • is it gst included?

    • Yep, so $771AU if you get TRS back.

  • I can't even get an 11 to 13" laptop in 4k. Seeing phones with it just pisses me off

    • -1

trust me you don't want it. Kills the battery life

      • I actually just want a photo frame for displaying photos in high resolution

Seriously can't get 4k + windows (gphotoshow is by far the best software) without paying $2000.

  • Whats the Huawei Wifi Extender like?

  • Please, anyone buying this phone, buy a tempered glass screen protector for the front+back if you're not using a case ($10 from eBay for both). It doesn't take much to break the thin glass panels on these, and they've saved my Z2's back a few times (cracked 2 protectors so far).

    • +1

Good advice as I have known 2 people who cracked their screen and it ruins the digitizer where the crack is, rendering the phone inoperative.

  • Very tempting. Do you have a working display model at your Ultimo store?

I'm still thinking whether I should buy this or wait for Galaxy S7.

    • is the s7 out? or do you mean buy a phone thats actually available or wait for a new model to come out in the future?

      • It's coming out in a couple of months.

        • +1

It's also rumored to have a bigger battery and reintroduce the sd card. That's going to be really good, because I'm on an S6 and I'm stuck with 32GB for the lifetime of the phone. It really hurts because I'm not like those Apple plebs who are used to it.

  • For what it is worth I had a Z5 Premium and I found it really laggy, and I have had a Z, Z1, Z2 & Z3 so have enjoyed the Xperia line in the past, but this one I found noticeably slower. It could have been the model I had, but I also noticed the heat as well when in use.

Still the price is a really good one and you can always cool it down under the tap if it gets too hot!

    • how long did you have it for?

      • Overnighter! It arrived on New Years Eve and I sold it New Years Day!

    • @Matty

I posted this on Whirlpool last week, have similar complaints about the lag + more.

Well its been three weeks since I picked up my Z5 Premium and I have to say, for the price I am extremely disappointed with the phone and would not recommend anyone picking this up.

      Here are the reasons:

      • Lack of software support. Z5C and Z5 have seen more firmware updates (as tweaked for local carriers) that have seen camera and battery life improvements where the Z5P has not. In addition just using the phone scrolling through menus and opening apps is extremely laggy.

      • Cellular quality. Is no way near as good as the Z5. I previously mentioned that in poor reception quality zones the Z5P tends to perform worse off than the Z5. Another example I can give is the Arts Centre in Melbourne. 1-2 bars reception on my Z5 and friends G4/Galaxies etc and on my Z5P I couldn't get anything, not even 2G.

      • Battery life. Is horrendous, partly due to the poor network quality. I will barely make 4 hours SOT on pure 4G per day.

      • 4K display isn't amazing. Yes it looks awesome for the 2% of the time I watch movies (that are compatible) of pictures. But if makes the phone heat up so much on the top right corner to the point it feels like its going to melt the glass.

      Z5P – 5/10
      Z5 – 8/10

They are definitely not the same phone and the Premium is not Premium by any means other than the price point.

My opinion will be subject to change if there are any improvements to the firmware.

      • That's what happens when you release a phone at the end of the year still using the same SOC as the one used in phones released early Q1 of the same year (Snap 810, HTC One M9), except your new phone is pushing 4X the resolution.

  • gd deal
quality deal sold it for low $700 on ebay. after the 20% discount. grey import thou but msy and grey import…. same thing really.

    • but msy and grey import…. same thing really.

Nope. With Australian stock from MSY, you can deal directly with Sony Australia.

      • You can? Then why can't we deal with Google if we purchased the nexus from jb?

        • +1

Because Google didn't make the phone.

        • lol…are you new to the Nexus series or something. Go look at the manufacturer of the last 5 Nexuses.

  • +1

    4k res on 5.5" screen….
    Give me a break….
How about phone manufacturers dropping res of the screen and work on battery life, reliability and heat issue.

I can get away without 8x core cpu and 4k screen…

    • +1

sony phones have been great with battery life.

      • +2

The expectation of great battery life from all Z5 series phones have missed the mark. Have a look at some of the feedback on Whirlpool.

In addition, I walked into MSY to buy other things this afternoon, saw the 15 or so Z5Ps in the display cabinet and asked them how many has he sold today, answer was zero.

    • bcos its easier flog off higher phone specs to nimwit consumers withoutany knowledge of the cost vs benefit… 4K screen and 8 core cpu sounds beter than dual core cpu and HD screen. aNd then Guess which one still has the phone hiccups! LOL

      • The 8 core cpu is just big.LITTLE which is the same thing Androids have used for years now. There is nothing special about it. It is twin quad core CPUs, one is clocked slower than the other to save energy and battery life when the faster quad core is not required.

It is not a boastful claim by any means. The octa core was not meant to speed up the performance compared to a quad core. The extra quad core's purpose is to conserve battery life, because the second quad core CPU is slower than the main one.

4k on the other hand, you might have a point.

    • Telstra cruise is regularly on sale for $9

  • Rep, any sign of a Z5 standard? Premium is too big for my tiny hands.

  • +1

Could be kinda nice but I think I'd much prefer a 1080p AMOLED screen than a 4K back lit TFT. Specially at just 5.5"

  • I have a z5 Premium and personally love it. Upgraded from a Note 4 and find the in hand feel of the phone and the software interface to be much nicer than the Samsung

The camera is also much better.

Battery life for me isn't an issue.. Lasts me all day and I am a heavy user always replying to Web messages throughout the day

I don't believe anyone would be disappointed at that price

  • Sadly, it's only a Snapdragon 810, the same SOC that powers the 1080p version.

    • Only? That's the best SOC available at the moment…can't get anything more powerful than that until the 820 comes out

      • It's not very far away.

The thing is going to be superceded very fast. They could have waited a bit for 820 which sounds like it's needed if the lag claims are true.

In past years, both Qualcomm and Samsung have released multiple SOCs in the same year (e.g. 801 and 805). This time they've both slowed down. So to get a 10 month old SOC in a new phone is a bit disappointing, especially when that phone ups the ante as far as resolution goes.

I was expecting Note 5 to have a faster SOC than S6, but since it's the same resolution, and basically the same phone just slightly bigger, and the 7420 is such a good SOC anyway, I guess they get a pass. But going from 1080p to 4X its resolution, I expected a bit more than just the same SOC that powers an M9. I might also add that both HTC and Samsung distanced themselves from that processor as did LG who chose an underclocked 808 for the G4.

        • Undoubtedly the 820 will have issues too so should Sony wait until 2017 for the 830?

There's always going to be something better/faster/shinier but Sony had to release a phone at some stage. They haven't had a proper flagship for a long time, especially when they used to release a new flagship every 6 months during the Z/Z1/Z2 days.

I've a 810 in my Lumia 950XL and it's been great. Does what it needs to do and never any lag.

        • @IceCreamBandit:

FWIW, the 820 should really have none of the 810's problems. New process node and custom architecture.

they used to release a new flagship every 6 months during the Z/Z1/Z2 days.

Used to? They still do. It's just that the Z3+ / Z4 was a clusterf*ck of a release and they didn't follow through with it properly.

          Z - Feb 2013
          Z1 - October 2013
          Z2 - March 2014
          Z3 - September 2014
          Z4 / Z3+ - April / May 2015
          Z5 - September 2015

        • @ProspectiveDarkness:

Yeah the 820 benchmarks and prelim tests suggest that it doesn't suffer from the over heating and throttling of the 810. Qualcomm really dropped the ball this generation. Can't always be perfect I guess but hopefully the 820 doesn't come with a whole bunch of problems as well.

  • $849 for Android phone still expensive. More like $500 I would consider.

Still rocking the G4 from last year eBay deal

  • Just about to pay for it…price already back at 1099AUD? still an hour left til the end of 15th Jan :(
