      KaptnKaos? I'll pass, thanks :)

        :)

      • I fear this won't be the last we hear from KaptnKaos and his antics

        • That's Captain Chaos.

I'm KaptnKaos. A case of mistaken identity.

And who definitively mentioned that I'm a "he"?

        • +1

@KaptnKaos: Sorry it's so easy to jump to conclusions behind all these masks. I'm still adjusting to jv being an alleged female. I thought there were only guys on the Internet.

Post should be clearer to confirm that you can only buy the products using QFF points.

Sorry, I can't see a deal here, unless you really don't want to extract maximum value out of your points.

Good redemption of QFF points has them worth at about 1 to 2 cents each.

When looking at the redemption rates, even with 10% discount, you're not getting anything like 1 cent per point.

    Eg, Macbook Air 13" 1.6GHz/ 4GB/ 256GB (MJVG2X/A) 261,640 points = $2,616 at 1c per point

That same laptop is retailing on apple.com for $1849 (and that is before the rather common 10% off sales for Apple products).

    • Yes. Still over priced. We need 20% - 30% off for it to be competitive

    • Kipps what is the best way in terms of value to spend points at the moment? Is it still upgrading flights?

      • Maybe selling points on gumtree.

      • You need to look at classic flight redemptions and upgrades to get value of 1c/point upwards.

Never redeem on gift cards/goods as they don't give you the good rates.

    • Not sure how you are getting 1c per point. Even with the bonus $20 Myer gift card for each $200 GC purchase, the best I can get is 34,450 QFF points for $200+$20(bonus) in Myer Gift Cards. This equates to (22,000/34,450) 0.6386c per point.

      That means buying the Macbook Air 13" 1.6GHz/ 4GB/ 256GB (MJVG2X/A) at Myer for $1,670.85 ((261,640/34,450)*$220).

      • They sell on gumtree/forums regularly at 1c per point

        • They sell on the Qantas website for 4c per point

Seems Qantas is getting the best rate :-P

      • You need to look at classic flight redemptions and upgrades to get value of 1c/point upwards.

Never redeem on gift cards/goods as they don't give you the good rates.

  • Hmmm. On a baseline of ~43,000 QFF points for a $250 Myer voucher. Using 52.720 to get the 64gb Apple TV (https://store.qantas.com/Mobile/Catalogue/MobileProductDetai…) means it will cost ~$306 instead of $349 RRP.

I.e. It is better to spend the 52,720 directly with Qantas to get the Apple TV then to get the gift cards.

    • I think it depends on whether your QFF points could be redeemed for something that's worth more, and happens to be something you'd want.

I think some good deals here include the iPhone outright, Apple Watch and iPod touch.

JB eGift cards cost me 16,600 QFF points for $100.

Officeworks has the 32GB iPod touch on special for $284 ($349 RRP), so it would take an equivalent of $47,144 QFF points. This item is 48,960 QFF points directly.

The 64GB iPod touch is $418 from OW ($419 RRP), or 69,388 QFF points. Direct it's 58,770 QFF points (or $354 JB eGift card dollars).

I'm actually tempted. Dunno if I get slugged extra for shipping tho.

Edit: Interestingly, Qantas offers the option of using fewer points for real money. In my case, it's currently valuing $100 as 12,986 QFF points.

      • Yeah. I currently use 5000 points a week to upgrade one of my weekly return flights to business. Using the a gift card baseline (Myer, JB, Westfield) to help equate it to equivalent cash terms was just my mechanism to determine an arbitrary value to the points. The more I flick through it, the more I'm tempted to get something like the Apple Tv 64gb.

The iWatches also look interesting but I think I'll wait for the iWatch 2 to come out first.

Just did a lookup of the new 128gb iPad Pro. Using the Myer rate of 43,000 QFF points per $250, it comes to AU$1,264 compared to AU$1,499 at Apple. Not bad.

        • Please note that the deal might have just swung to getting the Myer Gift card bonus deal (Buy $200 GC and get a bonus $20 one) on the Qantas site. Using this combined with the usual Myer card, any 10% off deal that Apple might have, and possible claiming your purchase at the Airport will bring the price closer to something pretty low.

Or course you can't use it to purchase iPhones at Myer but you can get a JB Hifi GC for that although not as good in the points exchange rate.

Here is the deal: Qantas $200GC with Bonus $20 deal

where did the birthday code come from ? Ive never heard of that.

  • dont forget if you want taxback on gst at the airport then items bought with points give you nothing but if you buy gift cards from jb, myer etc to purchase the items then you can claim the gst back.

  • Very poor use of QFF points, even with 10% stacked on top of 15% birthday discount. Not a deal.

Care to provide some additional detail on better ways to use the points where a non frequent flyer person can benefit?

If I am lucky I might be able to get a good MEL-LHR economy return trip (120k now I think) in peak time and pay about $900 in now lower taxes (was $1038 in taxes for me last year). You will get a better 'return' for the points but it's pretty inconsistent.

The other way is in upgrades. I do this once a week but that is because my client pays for all my flights so I only need to pay a little more for business. When I go on holiday I am going as cheap as I can and more often than not my flights are not upgradable.

Don't get me started trying to find business class award seats on dates I actually want.

With all that I mind, those gift cards are actually starting to look good to me.

      • It really boils down to what you could redeem these points that suits you best. It would be rather ignorant for someone to assume everyone could benefit from something that can't be exchanged for a cash equivalent like gift cards. I would like to convert points for travelling too but timing, availability, and whether I'm even travelling at all would limit that option. No doubt some lucky souls will benefit way more than average, and good luck to them. I hope these offers come around again when Apple releases the new iPhones and Watches.

Just remember when comparing Apple prices with these offers, skip the Macs and the occasional iPads. Focus on items that usually don't get discounted much if at all.

  • Has anyone got the Qantas Store January Birthday code (BDAYJAN16) to work?
