MOD (DAVO) - Elite xbox 360 returned to full price, so removed that part from title.. Looks like a few people got the deal.

My first post. take it easy on me.

    Great price… but I'm reluctant to buy one online only because I want to be 100% certain I receive a Jasper unit. The "internal 256mb memory" gives it away as an older Jasper (Falcons had an external memory card)… but still - I'm not sure if I should risk it or not!

        I can't check that link out (everything is blocked at work), but no… I don't find them loud as hell?

        I have one Falcon unit for gaming, and two Jasper units as "media centre extenders". The Jaspers are definitely quieter than the Falcon (to the point where I can't really hear it when I'm laying on the bed).

        All 360's are loud if you play games from DVD (without installing do the HD)… but in terms of running the 360 as an extender, the fans in the Jasper are fairly quiet - on par with the PS3 (and yes, I have one of those too).

        I want another 360 Jasper for the spare bedroom though (I have a TV in there which I want to hook up to my home network via the 360).

          I have a Falcon (60Gb Pro), my best mate has a 512Mb Jasper (250Gb Elite), his is by far louder.. Mine is 15 months old, his is 1 month old.

          I don't think a Jasper is necessarily quieter.

              @Smigit: No, I ran mine in it's little enclosure in my entertainment unit (ie it'll get hotter and sound will be reflected out to me.) at my place with floorboards and a small room.
              Versus his sitting on an open shelf in a carpeted and larger room..
              His had everything going for it and was still louder!
              I realised as soon as I turned it on…

                @kimmik: Oh in that case, yes - I do have a slim PS3 - I got it as part of that Sony TV promotion a few months back (I bought a 46" LCD). All up I have a slim PS3 (for gaming), one Falcon 360 (for gaming), two Jasper 360's (media centre extenders) and a Wii (which I used… once!).

                Peronally I find the slim PS3 to be on par with the Jasper 360, provided you install the games to the hard drive.

                Also, I checked that YouTube link, and I call BS on that. In that video - swap the Falcon and Jasper, and that's how mine sound. I find the Falcon has a higher pitched whine, and the power supply fan in particular I can hear.

                I do know that different 360's have different brands of fans, so I may have gotten lucky with my Jaspers? Either way, my Falcon has that annoying high pitched whine which is why I use it for gaming only, and not as a media centre extender.

            @daydream: If you mean me - then yeah, I should have! I originally bought one to game when the Falcons first came out. I have a full-blown HTPC (4 HDTV tuners, 4Tb of space, Blu-Ray/HD-DVD etc etc), and when I realised I could use the 360 in another room, and use it to watch live TV, my recorded TV, my DivX TV shows etc off my main HTPC…. I bought two more.

            I want to buy one more for my spare bedroom though, which is fully decked out as well - it's just missing the 360.

            (For what it's worth, my house has a gigabit ports in each room!).

            I know some people rave about the PS3's media capabilities, but I find the 360 to be almost perfect.

            (The main problem being it can't natively stream HD divx stuff via the media centre extender inferface, it must be transcoded first - which is the same as the PS3 though in most cases. The other main problem is that it can't easily stream ripped DVD's from the HTPC… but there are workarounds for that).

              @MrGareth: 99% of HD video doesn't need to be re-encoded. Plus, you can get your full HD sound with your BD rips if you have a PS3. On the other hand, 360s are probably better for SD stuff since they're a hell of a lot cheaper.

      Jaspers have been around forever…I don't think its worth worrying about. Even in the unlikely event you don't get one you'll be covered under warranty.

    Just a quick question before I bite the bullet, is there much difference between Arcade and Elite? I will use it on a 42 inch full HD plasma. Will the harddrive allow me to store games on it, so i dont have to swap discs? Thanks!

      The Only difference is the elite has a 120GB hardrive and its black.You still need the discs to play.I'd go the elite for the extra $$.

          No.. Hard drives are bloody expensive for 360.
          You might find a used 60Gb drive for about $80.. No way will you find a new 120Gb for less than $120

      You can install games to the hard drive but unfortunately you'll still have swap discs. Installs are mainly for speeding load times, less noise (dvd drive can be pretty noisy), and preventing wear on the dvd drive.

        Both these guys are correct. You still need to switch disks…
        Definitely get the Elite though.. You'll need the hard drive for any Xbox Live games you may buy and it's a superb bargain. The Arcade is merely a good deal by comparison.

    fish pond needs to be audited by ACCC! they have 2 second deals. i think its illegal now days open a online store and advertise a ps3 or xbox for $100 for 2 minutes and crash their site up so no1 gets nuthing at the price… does any1 actually get one?

    I found out they'll change the price back after they sold out the item, now the shipping status has changed to 'Ships within 6-11 days' instead of 24 hours. Like the PS3 last time…

            @Smigit: I guess they probably need to achieve something like monthly revenue target, reducing price is one of efficient ways to do. Special pricing is a way to build up their brand and open up their market.

            Ps. dont be so aggressive. I'm not their employee, if you want the truth and purpose of how they run their business, why dont you ask them instead?

        I have both and do prefer my PS3 nowadays but it wasn't always that way, until around update 2.80 I thought the PS3 and the PSN were both quite poor. I used to play the 360 instead all the time, the PS3 is still missing use your own in game music on 95% of games and has no cross game chat or private chat channels (for games like MW2 when you only want to talk with your friends and not everyone else) stuff that the 360 has had forever. Like I said, I do prefer the PS3 now, the free PSN is nice (but for how much longer is uncertain) but the 360 in no uncertain terms can be described as lame.

        depends, ps3 is $2-300 more expensive… and atm they are playing the same games. But yes, 360 will probably become redundant first.

        If PS3 slim had linux, then i'd cross for sure.

        Neither console is better than the other. It's all up to personal choice. There's no objective proof that says one is better than the other as there are so many determining factors. It's a subjective matter so saying the 360 is lame just because you like the ps3 is a fail at logic. The only idiots that say one is better than the other are fanboys. I don't have either console. I only have a PC and a Wii, and I'm happy with that as I can play the games I want to play.
