Please Recommend Me a Phone for Missus

Hey,

She is currently using a S3, and her screen is pretty much destroyed. Looking to get her a new phone for her birthday, but not sure what good deals are out there.

She usually just uses the phone for very basic things i.e. calling, facebook, a bit of youtube, music, whatsapp, and general web surfing.

I don't think she needs something incredibly high-end due to her only doing very basic things. I'm not too familiar with the current phone market, so was hoping you guys could recommend me something that's a good upgrade from the S3, but will also not hurt the bank too much.

Thanks!

Get the upcoming Xiaomi Mi5, which is around the same size as the S3. Expect to spend perhaps $450 AUD.

For options under the $300 mark, there are

    $200+ ~ 280 AUD
Xiaomi Note 2 (removable battery, SD card) / Note 3 (non removable battery, no SD card

    $270+
    Mi4

    $300 AUD
    OnePlus X
    OnePlus

    $200
    P8 Lite

The humble Motorola E and Motorola G also deserves a mention.

Moto E is available for $196 from JB Hifi.

Moto G 3rd gen is avaible from Kogan for $250 + postage

Note you can also trade in an old but working phone for $50 at JB HIFI when you buy a Nexus device.

Where would you put an S5 against those? At least it's 'what she knows' (we all know what females are like! … Well I think some of us do lol)

      • The Mi4 uses the same SOC (Snapdragon 801) as the S5. Problem is that it lacks an SD card slot.

I'd probably lean towards the OnePlusX. Again Snapdragon 801 SOC but with a SD slot this time, but smaller battery compared to the Mi4.

      • I would agree with Scrimshaw on his choice. I will personally take (nearly)stock UI over any skinned UI. But if she is used to Samsung UI aka Touchwiz and would not want to switch to anything else, then I think S5 sounds decent upgrade. Sorry, I am one of those who don't know what the females are like in this regard :P

    • I recently bought the Xiaomi Note 3. Really good phone and has great iphone 6 plus type looks if that is important. The Note 2 does everything the 3 does (plus removeable battery and takes an SD card) at around $100 less but does not have the metal casing and fingerprint scanner to give that more premium feel. The 32GB version of the Note 3 also has an extra GB of RAM. I'm really happy with it. Got it for around $280 delivered.

    • Thanks!

      I'll def check those out.

I was looking at the Nexus 5X, and that seems like a good phone for a decent price? I like the colours it comes with, too bad the Google $100 discount deal has expired, and JB only stocks black.

  • Why don't you take her into one of the Telstra or Optus shops and find out what she likes the look of. If you are in Melbourne the Telstra shop on Swanson is probably the best; they also have Wifi so you can look at the reviews for the phones whilst you look at them.

    • The last time I went into a Telstra/Optus shop with my girlfriend, she went straight for the iphone 6 Plus. I said you're not getting an iphone, but she made me buy her a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and a Microsoft Surface Book. I stopped her using Apple products, but my wallet took a hit.

      I think it's worth it.

females like their high end Apple stuff huh…

Even though the most taxing thing they will ever use their phone for is facebooking, whatsapping and snapchatting they still want the latest and greatest Iphone 6+. "you serious girl — do you need a $1000 phone to do that. I bet you didn't even read the reviews, you just want one because everyone in your workplace has one too"

Be careful not to bring your girlfriend to a BMW car dealer :)

        • When it comes to cars, she asks me what to get. I always say Japanese or Korean. I got her a Honda Accord Euro.

        • "females like their high end Apple stuff huh…"

          Only the vacuous ones.
Smart, financially savvy ones like my wife like the ones that do the job well for the least amount of money possible.
Unlocked ZTE Qlux ticked those boxes for her and came with free Monster headphones which she sold = FREE Phone.

Rather than depend on a male, I rather buy my own phone with the money i earn. I used to like the expensive iPhone stuff and expensive french/italian bags, but once I started earning my own money, I realised how expensive it is to buy a new iPhone every 2 years. It's definitely easier to spend someone else's money.

    • Because I kind of want the gift to be a surprise.

      • Girls want good cameras. Get a LG G4.

        • Know any good deals for the G4 atm?

        • @drose01:

The nexus 5x is made by LG and for the first time, the nexus camera doesn't suck. My brother has one and it snaps very good shots.

The downside I suppose is the hefty price tag and lack of sd.
