Interesting. Perth to Hong Kong is $725. Perth to Beijing is $692, which goes via Hong Kong.

    • Skiplagged ;)…
      maybe..

      • haha would not recommend though, Cathay probably won't let you board the return flight! :P

        • Haha so you know what I'm talking about!
          Agreed.
And if you have check-in luggage it probably wouldn't work either.

        • @illumination: Haha I do! Yes absolutely, your luggage situation will be messed up! You'd have to take carry-on only, and be flying one way only to make it worthwhile. Even then, the airline would probably put a mark against your name.

        • +1

          @justcallmeboss:

Not sure about Cathay, but China southern does put a record against your name and ID if you purchase MEL-CAN-PEK, but only fly MEL-CAN.

If anyone would like to save the $100, just fly to Beijing and fly back on the same day, and make a "stopover" in HK.

        • not sure why the airlines are so fussy about it, if you pay for a flight and choose not to use it, then it is free money for them isn't it?

what is this world coming to when you can't even give money away? :)

        • @FW190:
Because they can sell the routing that you actually want for more and hence earn even more profit.

  • Pretty good price.

  • i thought it would be for the coming chinese new year period :(
i probably have to go with china eastern

  • $730 for Melbourne-HK late July to August

  • I too thought the deal is for the Chinese New Year for folks with Chinese ethnicity here in Australia to visit their families in China.

OP any chance you can help with that?

    • Airlines would never have sales over these periods as the flights will be full anyway. Why would you have a sale when everyone will be purchasing tickets regardless of price?

It's funny that a CNY promotion doesn't allow travel during CNY, not surprised because flights will sell out with family heading home for CNY.

Cathy are a great airline and at this price I'd jump.

  • Hi cxrep, are these upgradable fares with my points? Thanks

  • +1

good prices but no seat allocation / reservation option of economy prices

    • Nope. In my case I stayed up until 23:55pm so that I could choose my seat as soon it reached "48 hour before checkin". I then got a non-descriptive error, which prevented me from doing so. Had to phone their support in the middle of the night (after being on hold for a long time), who could not give me a meaningful resolution. Long story short, I did not get good seats, and Cathey told me "just go to the airport, it should be alright, fingers crossed".
For those who get the same problem: yes, it turned out alright, and during check-in they could not detect anything wrong.

      • glad it worked out ok for you - I don't understand why premium airlines do this. it costs them nothing to allocate seating at the time of booking. it would probably save them money by freeing up call centres. Virgin Australia are doing a similar thing. I flew with some friends that left there allocation too late and the only seats available were exit rows or not sit together. They had to pay and extra $120 (approx) each to sit there (sit together) on a flight from BNE - LAX. Poor form virgin…

        • +1

I know why they do it - they can charge more money that way for the privilege of selecting your seat earlier. It's not uncommon, because this way they can offer different price brackets. I'm actually not too fussed, except I expect online check-in to actually work, especially if I stay up till midnight to select my seats. This experience made it very clear to me that Cathay's online systems are a black box which nobody understands, not even their own staff.

  • Will wait for Qantas because of 30kg luggage.

      Try China Southern. 46kgs.

        China Southern

        No thanks …. :(

        • +5

True, but China Eastern make china southern look like Singapore airlines.

      • ahahah.

That's the weight of a small Chinese person. Child smuggling?

Can't see anything below $850 in Nov for Melb to HK…..

  • Hi Store Rep,

Generally which sale promotion is the cheapest time to purchase tickets?
Earlier to time of travel or closer to time of travel?
I thought the earlier you buy tickets, the cheaper it would be.

I purchased tickets during the last Cathay sale and the air fare for my family was about $3529.
I've put the same dates and the same flights in this sale promotion and it's $3276.

Any tips for us OZ bargainers?

    • Oil price has gone down hard

    • I purchased 2 adults and one infant tix to a Chinese city cost me all together 1,250. I booked last Oct.

      • Is the ticket allow you to stay over in HK for few days? or is it only transit in HK?

It seems if you want to stay over in HK for few days, the ticket price is far different to the promoted fare even on the same travel dates.

        • +1

The ticket does allow stopover in hk in both directions. However, if you stopover, the fare will be higher.

If you have not been to hk before, i highly recommend you to stopover 2 nights. I understand most sales CX airfare permit stopover in hk.

    • Usually six months or more, but then again other factors, ie fuel prices are lower at the moment, so tickets would be cheaper. :)

      • thanks everyone!
        makes more sense now

  • Hi Cathay store rep,

Could you please explain what is "No show charge"?

Is that something I need to pay Cathay if I missed my flight?

  • +2

    Anything to Vietnam? :)

    • looking at Adelaide -> vietnam -> bangkok -> Adelaide, so expensive!

  • Low season to see the cheaper airfare would be
    14JUL16 THROUGH 17SEP16
    07OCT16 THROUGH 13NOV16

  • Hi Store Rep,

Is it possible to take advantage of this deal but from Hong Kong as point of origination?

    • No. CX usually sell ex-HKG fares more expensive than say ex-Asia because they want more customers transiting.

  • -4

Purchase via travel agency is more cheaper mostly as travel agent will give you discount from their commission.

    • +1

A commission which you don't have to pay by going directly with the airline.
I have often found the travel agent to be more expensive by the exact amount of their commission. Also, a travel agent often does not let you pay by creditcard (or charges a surcharge for it), which means you cannot get free travel insurance (if you have a platinum or signature card). Any issues, you cannot deal with the airline directly, but depend on your travel agent's availability to sort it out.

      • Agents can accept cards for the same credit card fee that the airline may charge. It's dependent on their arrangements for paying the airline.

If you wish to pay by credit card, CX are actually undercutting agents with these sale fares. If you're paying by cash then CX aren't undercutting agents so there can be savings to be had by going through an agent.

  • Does anyone know what the general cost of return flights to Hong Kong would be? I have to do a course in November but they want me to hold off and book flights after August.

    • +2

Price has been lowering due to lower oil prices. But these prices are about as good as I have seen during the last year or so. If you know you are flying in November, this is a good deal. But if there is uncertainty, you can probably afford to wait. I expect there may be more specials between now and then.

    • +1

Anything under $700 is a great deal with QF/CX
Cheapest I've seen is the rare Qantas sale for $599 return, though you won't find that for travel in November, so imo this deal is definitely something to consider.
Maybe they said to hold off till August in case your circumstances change? I wouldn't recommend leaving it that late otherwise.

      • It is in case the MBA course dates change. Enrollment is in August. I think I'm going to take a chance and grab this while I can though.

  • Does anyone know whether I can make HK a stop over for a few days on the way to Shanghai? Would there be a surcharge involved?

    • You can always try. We booked return trip ADL-HK-CMB, then added a stop over on the return flight as 12 hours wait was too long. Price dropped $300 per person!

    • no surcharge. u can stay in hk for as long as 7 days with your transiting flight ticket (hk to sh)

      • Thanks for that, to do that do I just buy the ticket shanghai return and then call them up to change it to a stop over in HK?

        • there is NO direct flight between sydney and shanghai. flying with cathay, you have to stop over in hk. what you could do is to change the date/time of the transiting flight to/from shanghai from/to hk. (ps. i assume you dont hold an aussie passport)

  • Cheaper to fly to Beijing than HK from BNE

  • Maybe will visit Hong Kong in March but Gravity Rush Collector Edition has probably sold out by now. :(

  • The 20kg luggage allowance is extremely disappointed though when other airlines like QF, SQ are all giving people 30kg on Economy Class.

Come on Cathay, it's time to lift your game!

  • Cathay uses the luggage capacity for their cargo operations.
It's the only reason why the fares are so low.

They don't make much money on economy class, that's why they have an amazing business class product.
That's the business model and that's why they are profitable.

Whereas Qantas make money on passengers and their fares will likely be higher.

    • I see Singapore airlines and Qantas offerings similar priced discount fares popping up on
ozbargains quite a few times. maybe those who wants a bigger luggage capacity should wait for those discounts.
