From what I can work out, the latest version of SKYPE allows you to access wifi hotspots all over the world and pay with your SKYPE credit. As a promo they are giving free access this weekend.

"Skype Giving Free Wi-Fi Access Worldwide This Weekend

As part of a promotion for their new SkypeAccess service, which lets you buy Wi-Fi access using Skype credit on many Wi-Fi hotspots around the world, Skype is offering free Wi-Fi access at compatible locations everywhere all weekend. For Aussies that means early Saturday until early Monday.

Skype Access is built into the new Skype 4.2 software update for Windows ( http://share.skype.com/sites/en/2010/02/4_2.html ), and also the latest Skype 2.8 for OS X ( http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/macosx/ ).

The global list of compatible hotspot providers is found here ( https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA10372/Which-SSID-should-I… ), but the easiest way to find Australian spots with some confidence is by checking the lists at Boingo Wireless, one of the Skype Access partners. There’s lots of Australian Wi-Fi spots that are part of this umbrella group.

Run a search of Australian locations here ( http://boingo.jiwire.com/hot-spot-directory-browse-by-state.… ).

The time runs 00:00 Saturday to 23:59 Sunday UTC. So do your local timezone maths from there. eg, AEST is 10:00 Saturday to 09:59 Monday. If you can find some local access, enjoy"

  • so free wifi access to make phone calls since skype is just messaging service on a electronic device? yeah?

I already get free skype calls with my phone provider but it seems boingo can be more than just that.

    thanks for the heads up.

  • Actually eventually the point is using Skype credit as a payment mechanism for WiFi access (for data or Skype). Handy if you are a traveller and want to buy some access. Currently the usual hassles are you have to use a credit card, and you have to buy in whatever chunks are sold, e.g. 10 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours and nothing in between. With Skype credit there's a single price and payment mechanism.

I don't use WiFi much while in my home city and when I do my cafe provides it for free anyway, so the offer isn't relevant to me. I guess the freebie is inducement for people to try it before the scheme starts.
