  • I would stay away from IJK the people running the place are a joke especially the owner. I did alot of business with them in the past & I can honestly say there is maybe one decent worker Jon if in fact he is still an employee (have not been back since 2011). I would say the service is even worse then MSY.

To be fair, you havent been there in FIVE YEARS.

That was about 5 prime ministers ago.

      • I think you will find that it is the same people running the place.

        • Are you sure about that? you haven't been here for 5 years

        • So are you saying Simon is not there anymore? & Julie, Cherry are gone too. Is Tony gone? because then I might come back.

        • -2

          @supatight: cry harder m8

a lot of things change in 5 years in a business. I'm sure your business is so missed by all.

        • @Makoto:

especially PC stores. Many have come and gone and 'restructured' in that time.

Also I love the central conceit.

"I havent been there in 5yrs but I think you will find that it is the same people running the place".

So you dont know, but you're sure because you havent looked for half a decade. Right.

        • +3

actually The OP has confirmed (through PM) that all names except Tony are still there thanks

        • @supatight: what has that got to do with this deal? nothing

    • +1

You haven't actually said what went wrong.

      • +4

I would like think I was a regular good customer. I spent $31000 + in about 4.5 years. Basically what happen was one of parts I ordered failed within warranty period. Took it to Support and they sent it back to manufacturer. Finally when I was told to collect the new part Tony said there would be a $10 postage fee which he did not mention when I 1st brought back the defective item. So when I complained he said that I should have known it was standard. When I further questioned it I was told to speak to Jon when he was back from his break. So I went home logged in my account to make a record only to find that my discount rate on my account had been removed. I have not been back since.

  • looking for decent laptop for general crap ~400-500 dollars, anyone got any idea where to grab a cheapy?

so much crap on eBay and elsewhere.

    • just go to dell outlet and get an "As new" or "refurbished" one.

      • Found a decent one Dell website, its AS new.

        its 11" though…

    • Refurbished Thinkpads on eBay. T420/X220. They'll set you back around 300-350, and the build quality and keyboard is much better than the cheapo you can get new. Add in $50 for a new battery and you're set

  • Can you do a special on the E560 (same specs)?

    • Not at the moment. we will be doing some later on.

      • +1

        Any quad core i7 specials?

        • Sorry non at the moment.

  • Does upgrading to the ssd come with it installed?

    • Not installed, you will need to do it your self. I think it might void warranty, I am still checking with Lenovo.

Can someone explain to me what the point of this video card? The HD Graphics 520 integrated graphics in the Intel i7-6500u is better than the dedicated card… Are you worried that it will take too much RAM away from the CPU? I just don't get it… The only thing that dedicated card is good for is sucking juice from the battery.

    • I think m360 would preform better on 1080p? not too sure… more gigs better rendering?

      • It is a bit of speculation because I don't have this laptop. But in my experience the lowest cost/power discrete GPU is not worth it. I'd avoid GTX 920/930 as well. The HD 520 has shared access to the RAM. The R7 M360 uses DDR3 memory, which is the memory bottleneck for this GPU.

There is an advantage for DX12 enabled software (i.e. games), because then both the graphics cards can work at the same time. I'm just not sure how applicable that will be. The ThinkPad has very solid build quality and this price is not bad. But I'm not sure why it's not a 128GB SSD instead of the 1TB HDD.

    • Synthetic scores aren't very useful for comparing between manufacturers as there tends to be a lot of 'optimisation'.
If you compare the actual game benchmarks you'll find the AMD M360 is approx ~30-60% faster than the Intel 520. This is what counts.

      For instance,
      The Witcher 3 2015 1024x768
      Intel 520 12 fps
      AMD M360 20.1 fps

Differences tend to become more significant at higher resolutions

      http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-R7-M360.142637.0.htm…
      http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-520.149940.0.…

      • I wouldn't consider that game playable at 20 fps, we should basically only consider games that one or the other GPU can deliver >30 fps at low (1024x768).

SIMs 4. HD 520 gives around 161 fps, but M360: 85.3 fps. Both are completely usable. But HD520 is clearly the winner
Battlefield 4. M360: 45.7, HD520: 39.8. Basically no difference, given only one sample for each.
Tomb Raider gives a little margin to M360, but both playable. M360: 76 fps, HD520 66 fps.
        CS GO: M360: 88.9 (single sample), HD520: 93 fps.
        Diablo 3: M360: 70 fps (single sample), HD520: 81 fps.
        Anno 2205: M360: 35fps (single sample), HD520: 20 fps.
        COD: Black Ops 3: M360: 33.9 fps, HD520: 20 fps.

On the other hand, the M370 is a somewhat different story. Nearly every game is > 30 fps on low. http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-R7-M370.155656.0.htm…

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is no reason to pay extra to get M360 unless you love the game COD: Black Ops 3 (as they likely optimised for the AMD card). The only reason we need it is because we can't get the i7 without it at this price point. I'd tell everyone to pay the $50 extra and get one with M370, except that Lenovo doesn't seem to have a clean upgrade path for GPUs. M360 will basically just suck your battery (just turn it off unless playing COD).

Whether it's worth $150 extra, I'm not so sure. Lenovo has priced the 14" ThinkPad E460 with M370 and 8GB RAM at $1,056.66 with the Monkey sale. Noting that Lenovo has the sneaky habit of having the same exact spec via different upgrade paths priced differently.

        • I was only using the Witcher to illustrate a point, a synthetic benchmark isn't playable either.

As you've demonstrated, the M360 is slower in some games at low resolution. But, as I noted above, when the resolution goes up (this is a 1080p laptop after all) the M360 becomes substantially faster than the intel 520 in the games you've mentioned (SIMs 4, CS GO, Diablo 3). However not all games will be playable at this point. YMMV

Whether it's worth $150 extra, I'm not so sure.

Yeah tough call. Its not clear cut. The 520 is pretty competitive these days.

Lenovo has priced the 14" ThinkPad E460 with M370 and 8GB RAM at $1,056.66 with the Monkey sale.

There's no M370 in the E460. M360 is the top tier, if you want faster graphics you have to step up to the 15" E560 (or go to a different brand).

        • @megaphat:

the M360 becomes substantially faster than the intel 520 in the games you've mentioned

Would you really recommend to your friend should get an M360? If not, then stop splitting hairs.

        • @twocsies:

Would you really recommend to your friend should get an M360?

As I said above, it's a tough call. I got it because it was a free upgrade. Probs wouldn't pay $150 for it though.
I can confirm that on the games I'm running in my E460, the M360 is ~30-50% faster. Perhaps the difference will increase once DX12 comes in but I doubt those games would be playable.

If not, then stop splitting hairs.

That speed difference isn't splitting hairs. At least not for the games I'm running. YMMV.

        • @megaphat: Did you make the mistake of looking at the page for M370?

          Medium resolution

SIMs 4. HD 520 gives around 44 fps but M360: 36.5 fps. Both are somewhat usable. But HD520 is still the winner
          Battlefield 4. M360: 34.5, HD520: 28.2 fps. Basically no statistical difference.
Tomb Raider gives a little margin to M360, but both playable. M360: 40 fps, HD520 35 fps.
CS GO: M360: 87.3 fps (single sample), HD520: 61 fps. Here M360 does have an advantage. Maybe AMD worked to get it optimised?
Diablo 3: M360: 52.5 fps (single sample), HD520: 53 fps. No statistical difference.
Anno 2205: M360: 19.5 fps (single sample), HD520: 11 fps. Don't play this game on either GPU!
COD: Black Ops 3: M360: 20.6 fps, HD520: 11 fps. Don't play this game on either GPU!

With only one person for most of the tests of the M360, it's not clearly the winner. There was no real difference except for CS GO. Unless you get more test results there, I'd hesitate to make any conclusions.

        • @twocsies:

Did you make the mistake of looking at the page for M370?

No, I was looking at 1080p benchmarks. But yeah, most games won't be playable at that res.

I agree - we need more samples. Furthermore, it's a little difficult to interpret laptop benchmarks as they tend to come in a variety of different configurations.

        • @megaphat:
I mean, you can easily paste scores that you were "looking at". You are using a student laptop, and students should strive to communicate well. Personally, I really don't understand what you were looking at. There's no significant difference. Especially if you notice that the benches for M360 were mostly done on a 17 inch (easy to cool).

          high/ultra
SIMs 4: M360: 21.2/18.4 fps. HD520 21/12 fps on high or ultra. Maybe playable because SIMs is not action oriented.
Battlefield 4. M360 21.9/7.1 fps. Not good at all. Wouldn't advise playing. No benchmarks for HD520.
Tomb Raider might be playable on M360: 28 fps in high. 14 fps in ultra. HD520 21/14 fps. Neither can play it in ultra.
CS GO: M360: 65/43 fps (single sample), HD520: 44/23 fps. Here M360 does have an advantage. Maybe AMD worked to get it optimised? Don't play using HD520 in ultra, you will be rabbit hunted for sure.
Diablo 3: M360: 41.4/29.8 fps (single sample), HD520: 43/26 fps. No statistical difference. Probably playable on high, maybe ultra.
Anno 2205: Don't play this game on high/ultra on either GPU!
COD: Black Ops 3: Don't play this game on high/ultra on either GPU!

As the Thinkpad E460 review on notebookcheck.net predicted, "AMD's small GPU will unlikely calculate much faster than the once again improved processor graphics…" http://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-E460-Core-i5-Ra…

  • Is this laptop new?

    • Yes these are brand new.

  • This is a better deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/234365 and don't have to deal with IJK. Don't forget cash rewards works out to be $844.12.
