you dropped your OzB mithril card, sir

    ARM blunder

    • +1

Are the ARM Surfaces really that bad?

      • No

      • Not for normal folks, no

      • No but I've heard of quirks with not having native Google drive app support (big red flag IMO, imagine your 3rd party Gdrive app breaking down on presentation day) and having issues with some external hardware drivers

Overall most people who use this have pretty positive reviews so yea

        • +2

That was fixed quite a while ago

      • They work fine for non gaming machines. I look after hundreds of them for work.

        • Corporate environment?
I’m waiting for them to hit the second hand market and hopefully pickup one just to try Ubuntu.

      • -1

I have the lower spec version of the 11 and it's great. I've faced some compatibility issues, but the majority of stuff I need for day-to-day work runs fine.

        • What's the top 3 apps that have ARM issues for you?

Someone up there told me g drive was fixed

          • +1

@Pusheencat: Have a look over my comments elsewhere I reposted my recent experiences.
To add to that - latest native ARM Brave Browser and Libreoffice are not useable. I’m using an older version of libre and Firefox emulated.

            • @Low Punt: tbh, paying this much for a device and not giving us MS office is crook behaviour

              • @Pusheencat: Actually, never thought of that but they should bundle it with their hardware. I get it for free but it has become troublesome . It runs great and I love using it but data collection is pretty bad and as we can’t tell what data they scrape I don’t use it.

                • @Low Punt: yea, precisely because they already scrape so much data i'm balse about them scraping more from MS office

it's all about our risk tolerance. i can respect your POV 100% and it's a legit choice

take my data MS! but just give me MS office 365 while you're at it. i'm buying your in-house device fer chrissakes

          • +1

@Pusheencat: I've had issues with niche apps like Positron and R. Google Drive was an issue, but there's now an ARM version. Some games don't run on steam, but nobody should buy this for gaming.

Overall, I've found it to be a great device.

            • @G-Dawg: I bought it for battery life and it’s lived up to the promise. Really impressed from that perspective! Also, hasn’t burnt my testicles.

              • @Low Punt: coulda saved you millions in daycare and school fees bruh

              • @Low Punt: Yeah, I've loved the battery life too.

It has been a great device when I travel for work.

      • dont listen to the people saying no, they are salty for whatever reason

Intel AMD's new chips are just as efficient and will give you far better compatibility, there is literally no reason to buy snapdragon other than maybe the Price and the Price of this Surface isnt even cheap

you can find a Intel Lunar Lake or AMD's new gen laptops for around $1500

        • +1

I was mostly just curious. The bit about games & other programs not working on ARM PCs was enough for me to disregard them from my search results.

          • @BinaryPirate: Its not just games, Qualcomm promised a lot of support post release and barely did anything, even the programmers and creators didnt get much support I am very confused why there’s so many fanboys of it here lol

If you are after power efficient laptop look up Lunar Lake Intel ones, they last as much as Macbooks on standard tasks and the iGPU is enough to play certain games. If you are after more power then either Ryzen AI or Intel Arrow Lake H ones

            These arent gaming laptops tho

        • any of them with this quick-detachable keyboard at ~$1500 though?

  • +1

So snapdragons type processor for $1500 and keyboard extra $300. I say deal of a lifetime….not.

    • +1

the snap has a real power/heat advantage over intel, even if it's not that big a deal for most people

don't sleep on ARM being more mainstream in the next few years

      • -1

        no it doesnt stop lying

Lunar Lake Laptops are far better

        • If they are better, why did Intel kill off Lunar Lake and chips of a similar design then? Where are the Lunar Lake laptops?

        • -1

Lunar Lake Laptops are far better
          HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

          • -1

@mickeyjuiceman: so many dumb redditors here nowadays who just read headlines and know jack sh*t about actual tech, it sad

  • but the seller is Dick Smith/Kogan and all warranties go through them. Buyer beware.

Microsoft’s warranty support is generally super easy and makes it worthwhile cutting out the retailer if you have a problem. Lodge the repair through MS Device page, they give you a shipping label and TNT picks up the device on your preferred date to overnight it back to Sydney and then they send you a replacement the day after it arrives more often than not. Unsure if applicable if this is a grey import from Kogan however.

    • i haven't tried MS repairs on kogan/dicksmith devices, but reddit suggests a huge hassle with Samsung:

https://www.reddit.com/r/australia/comments/18nvufg/be_wary_… (mods tell me if external links are haram)

      so truly, BUYER BEWARE

      • Yeh definitely would always exercise caution with any Kogan purchase including this one. I’d also never buy anything of value from one of their marketplace sellers. But with this one it seems like Australian stock directly through Kogan/Dick Smith so the ability to bypass them for warranty should be pretty simple

        • -1

How do you know it's oz stock instead of a grey market from Turkey or hk

        • Any way to confirm local vs. grey import stock? I'm looking at a Forerunner from them too..

            @muwu: for potential buyers:

In the unlikely event that you require a warranty repair, we will collect your item, repair or replace it, then return it to you at no charge. We recommend that you keep your original product packaging if possible. In the unlikely event that you require a warranty repair and you do not have the original packaging, you will bear the responsibility for safely packaging your Product for transport and Dicksmith accepts no liability for any damage that may occur in transit. If your product was exclusively available for shipping to Sydney and Melbourne metro areas, return pick-up would occur from these areas only."

            Microsoft Store

"Your new Surface or Surface-branded accessory comes with:

            A one-year limited hardware warranty

            90 days of technical support

In addition to the standard limited warranty, you may have the option to purchase extended protection for your Surface (not available in all markets)."

TLDR It looks different enough so that I am very sus of DS/kogan devices through official MS channels

  • Surface hmmm… Not durable I must say.

My company used to give us Surface. Now it becomes XPS.

  • -1

New Surface missing the newer Intel and AMD Chips which have close to the same efficiency as ARM and also for a while missing that SD card slot and it seems like the keyboard costs more if you want touch…not worth

was looking at getting Lenovo Yoga 2 in 1 instead

An upvote because "someone" is out looking for a deal right now.

But for that inflated $, I'd rather hit a good refurb place on biz grade hardware and then upgrade what I can for peanuts. Get huge upgrade for less than half-price.

Also, get something ready for Linux Mint, and you're golden. M$haft is malware.

as a guy searching for such a device, have you considered the previous surface pro business models that have been out long enough to be refurbed?

i might be interested in such a solution
