  • paging Frequent flyer, is this any good ? !

  • +1

Not as good as the ANZ $70,000 QFF with no annual fee

    • +1

Agree. ANZ's offer is better.. ANZ's offer is 75k Bonus QFF with no Annual Fee and $2.5k spend

      • Agree. however if you have held a card and cancelled in last 12 months with ANZ cannot get the offer.

      • Yeah, but then you have to bank with ANZ and use their systems including internet banking. F… that. Never again.

        • What's wrong with their mobile app? Only gripe for me is that it doesn't show pending transactions.

        • +1

Ha! Have you used NAB's internet banking system/Mobile App? It's worse!

    • +3

I don't mind 70,000 dollar worth of QFF.

  • ANZ's offer has a higher hurdle for applicatoin ($75k minimum income, minimum credit limit $15k), and a higher minimum spend of $2.5k, but is obviously better in every other regard. I've found NAB to be very tight with premium cards, but very easy to get standard cards off.

Still a pretty good deal, $250 for 70k points, but not nearly as good as Amex's 80k (with lounge passes available) or ANZ's.

If you could get all three, you'd be laughing… enough to get to Europe in first class, and then some.

    • John your take on the Amex Business Platinum card that's give 150k rewards points. Heard some people got approved for two Amex issued cards so I might just test the water.

      • +1

Wasn't aware of it…just had a look. It's good, though still 1c per point, the same as the personal Platinum Charge Card ($1200 with 120k points if using referral).

The benefits of the Platinum Charge Cards are brilliant, though the points are not a steal, as they are with the Qantas and Velocity deals currently going on. If my card application history were different, I'd also go for the Platinum Charge (120k Krisflyer points will get you one way first class to Europe in the suites - then you get the free lounge access, flight, hotel stay etc.

        • What's this free hotel you talk about John?

        • Don't qualify for the Platinum charge card. Is the Platinum Edge any good?

        • @nightelves: If you get platinum charge, you get free Platinum Reserve. Platinum Reserve comes with free flight (all Australia and to NZ, not just within two hours or so), or a night's stay in a 4.5/5 star hotel.

There's another type of hotel elite membership the Plat Charge card comes with/used to come with that includes a free night each year (might be Accor?).

        • +1

@ltwo: Platinum Edge is outstanding value. $195 p.a. with free domestic flight and 3 points per $ at supermarkets. If you can get it through CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants (they don't seem to check - just search for them) you'll get it for $149 p.a., and currently they'll waive the annual fee.

Not as good as a pile of free points, but still pretty damn good.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: $149 annual fee through cpa aus seems to be better in the long run as opposed to the 10000 amex points if getting directly from amex.

        • @ltwo: I agree. You can get it and pay the fees each year, $149 for a return flight on Virgin is great value.

        • +1

+1 on the charge card. I used the points to fly the mrs and i to europe business class one way (using Aadvantge+qatar). Plus we've had 2 free nights at hotels in syd, with upgraded rooms/late checkout etc and even staying at sofitel you have entry to the lounge so free food + drinks, i rekon i got around 6 beers out of it. bonza! i hav lounge access in aus (virgin) and my priority pass expires in 2018. the list goes on, well worth the 1200.

        • @crowsnest bomber: If you could indulge me, when did you apply for the card? Did you have any existing cardS? Did they ask for payslips? Was the approval fast?

I'm seriously thinking about applying for this one, but don't want to burn an application on my credit file if this card is harder to get than the other Amex cards I've opened.

        • +1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: hey john, i actually has no amex card at the time so i can`t help you with that one sry. The approval process was ridiculously easy..online form, approved within minutes, no payslips or anything which i thought was surprising considering its a high end card.
The key to getting the most out of the card is to go thru all the memberships u receive.
Also note aadvantage are changing their award chart end of march so u gotta be quick to take advantage. To give u an idea, currently syd to lon business class on qantas/qatar is 60k points with zero taxes.
First class only 80k points..def the best value at the moment when u transfe thru spg. Also note if u wanna bring a friend, i bought a first class ticket for my wife for only $2.5k buy buying the entire 80k points outright. Anyway, hope that helps, my username is on the wiki too 😉

        • @crowsnest bomber: Thank you cnb. I have applied using your link… we'll see if I get approved (may cause some problems, as I've had a lot of recent applications, and have two Amex cards right now, and they ask you if you have any).

        • @crowsnest bomber: BTW - to confirm, you redeem the 120k points for spg points (1:1?), which you can then transfer to AAdvantage?

        • +1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: no probs..and na its actually 2 to 1 for spg (all others are 1 to 1)…then u transfer from spg to aa and get 5k bonus every 20k
..so essentially 120k amex = 75k aa..may not seem the best deal but u can usually purchase aa for 2 US cents and as mentioned, no taxes on qantas..i also got the dj amex to top up the balance as u can tranfer those to spg as well.. But it all changes end march for aa..also found enrich and krisflyer to be pretty good for business class flights to uk if u dont mind the taxes…hope that helps and goodluck

        • @crowsnest bomber: Yeah, was eying this deal off for Krisflyer (think it's maybe 120k points will get you oneway to Europe first class in suites where available), but yes the taxes are huge. Given the remaining 5k points only costs 100 USD, would be better off topping up and flying Qantas.

        • +1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: supposedly those first class suites are insane.
Another trick worth noting, because you used an award flight to/from UK, you need to buy a one-way flight as well to get there or back. These can be stupid expensive. I got around this by signing up to enrich, getting the 1000 sign up points, then using cash + miles option to redeem an economy flight. Mid last year the flight costs me 750.. I've just had a look now and syd-lon is $800 total…considering the exact same flight when searching malaysian airlines is $1200, its not a bad deal

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: How did you go Johnny, did you still get approved after all your recent apps?

        • +1

@dazzywazzy: Nothing so far…am expecting the letter to come in a fortnight's time that I was declined. Probably a bridge too far, but the offer is just so damn good (points well worth buying at 1c each, everything else effectively thrown in for free (hotel stay, free medium haul flight, lounge access etc).

Crowsnest Bomber - I take it you're not seeing any bonus points in your account?

        • @crowsnest bomber: Update - they called me for more information on the supp holder, so maybe still in it.

Can you tell me - once the points have been earned, can you transfer them immediately, or do you have to wait for a monthly points transfer? I'm just thinking it might be a bit tight on spending $1k, getting the points, transferring to SPG, then on to AA by end of March.

        • +1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: hey mate…glad to see your still in it with a shot..the points transfer is pretty quick, couple days max i rekon for it to reach ur spg and then a couple days to reach aa.
Dont wait for the gold spg account to be set up as that can take a couple months..just set up a normal acc online and u can merge later.
Also note if u want to redeem a qatar airline flight u have to call them, all other middle east airlines charge two award flights to uk but qatar is an exception so similar to qantas but much more availiability…note i had to call in the middle of the night cos the asia/aus call centre didn't know that qatar is only 60k business to Uk. But trust me it is..
          Good luck mate

        • @crowsnest bomber: Thank you so much. So you think any Qatar airways route (even South America) will be available with AA?

        • +1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: i just remembered you have to have an aadvantage account for a month before you can buy their miles. Dam should have mentioned that earlier. A way around it is to buy spg points instead which aren't too expensive.

Qatar only just started flying out of Syd and as a result, their seats aren't as popular as established airlines. There's no guarantees but id be relatively confident you'd find availability. If not, there's always other one-world airlines so you have options. flying mid week helps.

I'm not sure about south america as i did all my research for the UK/Europe. You might need to look at other airlines for that route

        • @crowsnest bomber: Thanks mate. I set up an account yesterday for AA, so that would give me just enough time to top up the remaining 5k points, should I be approved. Still tossing up if that's better value, or just transfer to Krisflyer for a 110k First Class redemption in suites (though this carries $500 in surcharges - it's easy enough to find availability, and is probably the best first product in the sky).

          Decisions, decisions. :)

        • +1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: yeah if i was travelling by myself i prob would have gone with singapore airlines first class. Its easy to book online and ya don't have to stuff around to purchase and transfer points. I had to worry about my wife so had to get a little creative :)

        • @crowsnest bomber: Appoved. Another 20k points for you. :)

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: nice one john! Good luck with it all :)

        • @crowsnest bomber: BTW - which Sofitel did you have lounge access? I can see at the Wentworth in Sydney, you don't get access…

        • +1

          @JohnHowardsEyebrows:

Woah, Reading all this was interesting.

So, You applied for a charge card which has a 1.2k annual fee?
How many points did you get with it? and was there a minimum spend / income requirement ?

The points this card has given you allows a return flight to europe?

Pretty confused, if you don't mind clarifying with me.

        • +1

          @Catalystic:

          No problem:

          • Spend $1k in 2 months, get 120,000 points, which can be redeemed for the same number of points with Qantas, Velocity (Virgin), Singapore, or a whole host of other airlines.

          • 125,000 Velocity points will get you return to Europe with Etihad (economy), but also one way in business class. Unlike Qantas, Velocity only charge you for actual taxes, so it's $80 for example from Melbourne to London (quite a bit more coming back home, bloodsucking British government duty).

          • 110k will get you one way to Europe with Singapore first class, but the availability is sketchy (they have this 'waitlist' thing, so it's not really worth the risk of converting to Krisflyer unless you know it's avaiable.

The stuff you get for free:

          • Access to Virgin's lounge, and can bring a guest as well, so long as you're both flying VA.

          • AccorPlus (though gotta sign up by Mar 31 to be sure), which entitles you to one free night at a Sofitel, Pullman, Novotel hotel in Asia Pacific.

          • Unlimited Priority Pass (as does one supplementary holder), also able to bring a guest each time.

          • Unlimited access to Amex airport lounges, one of which is in Sydney, but mostly are in US airports (and are first class lounge standard over there).

          • A $200 travel credit to spend on Amex travel, which is basically like an inhouse version of Expedia. It seems like its best use is to book a hotel around the $200 mark.

          • A free Platinum Reserve Card. Completely useless, except that it allows you to claim either a free domestic flight to basically anywhere in Aus (or to NZ), or a night in a luxury Australian hotel (e.g. Langham Melbourne, Radisson Blu Sydney).

          • Elite status with Accor, Hilton, Shangri-La, Club Carlson, and a few rental car agencies.

In a nutshell - if you're planning on doing a bit of travelling in the next year, and aren't on a shoestring budget, this is a bloody brilliant card to have.

        • @crowsnest bomber: I can't PM you…are you interested in selling me some AAdvantage points? I need to top up the last 5k, but they're very expensive to buy direct atm…thought you might be able to help.

        • +1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: hi John. It was wentworth Sydney where i got lounge access, i certainly wasn't expecting it. Also got a tub of ice cold beers sent to room and chocolate coated strawberries :) note this was in December so im not sure if the policy has changed. Also note i used the $200 credit for a night at radison blu in syd, and got upgraded to a spa room as im a club carlson member, room was bigger than my apt. Good luck!

        • @crowsnest bomber: Cheers again - any interest in selling me the 5k Advtange points? You're allowed to transfer to anyone right? :)

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Hey John, i would have been interested until i found out it cost 62.50 USD to share 5,000 points, while it costs 147 USD to buy outright. Looks like only really worth it if you have a lot of points to share, which i don't have unfortunately.

        • +1

@crowsnest bomber: All worked out in the end mate, as I had referral bonuses helping me past the required points. ;) Thanks for everything with this card mate - I just booked a first class flight from Melbourne to London on Qantas A380 for later in the year, 80k points (130k Amex points), 70USD taxes.

So $1200 annual fee has netted me a seat that would ordinarily cost $10k - and the rest is gravy. :D

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: well done mate, that sounds awesome! Glad i could be of help :)

The NAB 60,000 Velocity points for $150 beter than this as well

    • +1

I tried to take advantage of the 60k Velocity promotion but have yet to see my 60k points. I applied/received my NAB Premium Velocity card in October 2015 and I made my spend criteria ($1500) within the first month, but yet I still havent received my bonus points.

Numerous calls to NAB have yield answers such as "As per the terms and conditions, it will take up to 4 months for the points to be allocated", or "You will receive your points at your next statement cycle". I still haven't received the bonus points, but on good faith I am giving them until March to post the points, otherwise it will be a letter to ACCC and/or FOS.

      • Takes up to 4 months to get them but that means at least that time. Usually by the end of the statement period. If u don't get them try and speak to ppl up the chain at NAB.

I had the same thing happen to me with ANZ points that never got credited. Turns out the idiot who processed my application "by accident" clicked check box that I was doing a balance transfer from another card that would make me ineligible for the bonus points.

end of it was I spoke to manager and they assigned a customer care case member to track it down and I got my points 2 weeks later.

Good luck with it. Nb I also waiting for my nab points but I signed up in December so hopeful it works out better this time

      • I'm in the same spot, still yet to receive my bonus 60,000 points. Hit the $1,500 spend within the first week.

  • If anyone is thinking about having the annual fee waived in the subsequent years, don't bother. I've already tried. They wouldn't budge.

Cancelled the card in the end. Is there any other AMEX QFF cards that earn 1.5x points per dollar?

    • ANZ Qantas Frequent Flyer Black

    • Also Westpac Black and CBA Diamond.

      • link?

        • No deals with either of them at the moment (I got the Westpac Black on the 60k points + no annual fee first year promo). ANZ is definitely the 1.5 ppd card to get atm.

    • +1

I just had my annual fee of $250 reversed on my NAB Premium card. I wait for the fee to appear on my statement, then ring up requesting payout figures to close the account stating that the fees are excessive and they will come the the party to make you happy. I have tried this method on 3 different credit cards and it has worked on all three. Worth a try!

      • That work even though you've only just started using the card.

        • Normally the fee is charged on the 1 year anniversary, so use the card for the year and when it appears on your statement, complain about high fees and it should be reversed, although not yet tried on 2nd year, wait and see

      • Is that on a new card you just got @LittleDon or an old card you had for over a year?

      • Maybe there's a trick to this. I called before the annual fee is due, and all they did was try to get me on a card with a lower fee. I told them no thanks.

    • When do they charge the annual fee , at the end of the first year or when the account is opened/approved ?

  • I have already got one of this card, can I apply another new one and get this offer? Do we get annual fee waived if we have home loan package with NAB?

  • Same as Loku123, tried to get the annual fee waived and they couldn't do anything since I don't have any other account with them even I spent more than $100k a year…cancelled the card straight away

    • removed

    • +2

$100k spend?!! And they won't waive?? They have no business sense at all. Then again, they had no problem issuing me four cards in the past 18 months, despite me having closed the last 3 without spending much, and just taking advantage of bonus points.

      • Hahaha you're the points king Mr Johnny

      • Yeah, I even mentioned that ANZ was running a similar promotion at the time and they just replied "We are aware of that and it is similar as us, it's only free annual fee the first year, you will still have to pay in the end………"
Hopefully ANZ treats me better than NAB as mine is due in April lol.

  • What's the minimum income requirement?

  • Good for stacking points but you may be better off with 80k from Qantas with Amex
    https://www.americanexpress.com/au/qantas-premium-card

  • wasnt there one with 70 or 80k points for $350 annual fee but free flights per year?

    • +1

For Virgin, yes. $349 with 80k points and free return flight, as well as two lounge passes.

For Qantas, you can either get 80k points with two lounge passes for $249, or you can get 80k points with a free flight for $450 with their Ultimate card.

All the deals are available at the below referral wiki.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals…

Amex are a lot easier to deal with than the banks.

      • Think the Virgin one is only 50k now

        • +1

Still 80k if you go through the referral link. 50k if you don't take a referral link.

  • I'm tempted to apply for the Virgin CC even though I already have a Qantas Amex but might just wait till May before attempting it.

    • FWIW, I applied for the Velocity Amex in November, and the Qantas Amex a month ago. Got both sets of bonus points.

      • So when you apply do you state in the application form that you already have an existing Amex card or you disclosed that? Will definitely use your referral link when I get the chance Johnny.

        • +1

Ummm from memory if you go through the links they don't ask…?

And cheers for the referral. :)

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows:
No but surely they do some checking as the offers state you must not hold another amex card?

        • @HitlersDad:
I had a boring Gold Amex until mid last year. I applied for the Velocity late last year, got the full 80k bonus. I applied for the Qantas Premium in January (still holding the Velocity), also got the bonus points (my partner the same).

So there are rules, and there are 'rules'.

  • Compare Frequent Flyer credit cards and offers:
    http://www.creditcardfinder.com.au/using-qantas-frequent-fly…

    • +1

too much read and not helpful. this is a credit cards selection page on qantas website

  • Does anyone know what qualifies as "new"? (i.e. I cancelled my Nab QFF card last October for the 40,000 points - will I still be considered 'new' or is there some cooling off period like ANZ?

Offer commences 12 October 2015. Offer only available to new approved NAB credit card customers who apply by 30 April 2016. Offer is not available when closing/transferring from another NAB credit card account or in conjunction with any other NAB offer. Terms, conditions, fees, charges and lending criteria apply.

    • +1

Nah, they'll keep giving you points. I've had three NAB cards for points in the past year…all good.

      • Awesome thanks

  • do they charge QFF account "joint fees" if i am a new NAB client?
