Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Credit Card. Bonus 20,000 Points + $0 Annual Fee for First Year

90

Just came across this Virgin Velocity frequent flyer card when looking for credit card deals.
Offer 3 looks quite good:
* Bonus 20,000 frequent flyer points (10,000 at first spend and 10,000 for spending $5000 within the first 3 months)
* $0 Annual Fee for first year
* $129 Virgin voucher (covers annual fee) every year (this feature begins mid 2016)
* International travel insurance included.

Its a fairly low earning card from a points perspective, but as long as you make one virgin flight a year worth $129 or more its essentially free for life (via gift card worth same as annual fee). Worth it even if just for the insurance.

Bonus points terms:
10,000 bonus Velocity Points offer is provided to new approved Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Card account holders who apply by 29 February 2016 and make an Eligible Transaction with the card within 3 months of card approval. You will earn an additional 10,000 bonus Velocity Points under this offer if you also spend $5,000 on Eligible Transactions within 3 months of card approval. (Continues - see website)

A bit misleading to say it's $0 annual fee when it's $129 minus $129 voucher.

Also, $5k is a big spend for 3 months for a low earning card…

    • +6

It is $0 annual fee for the first year (having nothing to do with the voucher).

      • Ah, sorry, should have read properly.

  • The reduced on-going points earning rate is disappointing…

  • Yeah this wasn't a bad card, but they've cut back on the points earning, they've cut the 50% off base fare 4 times a year. But still kept the $129 annual fee. Although you can ask them to waive it.

    • Yes, but instead they are giving you a $129 gift voucher (instead of the reduced rate 4 times per year). So its not all bad.

      • Yeah but we used to get about $240 off as it includes 50% off for you & companion.

Anyone have a recommendation on a card to switch to after the point earn gets cut?

  • What is 20,000 points worth in terms of gift cards ?

    • +1

About $130. Worth more in flights.

TBH this offer is pretty crap - far better to get the Amex Velocity - 80,000 points for $500 spend with $349 fee including free domestic flight and two lounge passes.

      • Almost worth it just to sign up for the 80k points + flight + passes.

I got the Citibank Platinum card last year (fee free for life, travel insurance, concierge, lounge passes etc) but they have since devalued their points pretty heavily, so I'm looking for an alternative to earn Velocity points, preferably fee free…thoughts?

Same with my Citibank - I've now stopped using it, but will keep it for the lounge passes (fee free for life makes it worth retaining).

I earn most of my Velocity points through my Westpac Black, which I got fee free with 60k Qantas points last year (switched to normal rewards). That gets me 1.5 Velocity ppd (with 15% bonus often available). If you're a Westpac customer, they'll waive the fee for the first year right now, but no bonus points. Highly recommended, comes with Priority Pass (same as Citi).

The ANZ Black (non-Qantas) promo at the moment would give you nearly 40k Velocity points, and is more or less the same as Wesptac.

The Velocity Amex is by far the easiest points I've earned, mind you.
Outside the Amex issued cards and the prestige bank issued Amex cards, there really aren't many great deals for earning Velocity.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows:

Yeap i'm also waiting for the citibank platinum fee free for life just for the two priority pass you get each year.

So what is currently the best NON-AMEX Velocity points earning card out there? Does anyone know?
I already have the Amex but want something for the places that don't accept amex.

  • This card used to be great but they've reduced the benefits every single year.

    • Probably the Virgin Money Velocity High Flyer (i.e. step up from this one). The annual fee is prohibitive ($290), but you can get a half annual fee in first year, and probably waived each year thereafter (this is Citibank after all). The points earn is also being slashed from 1.25 ppd to 1 ppd, but still a good card to have.

      • Thanks, I'm also looking at the ANZ Rewards Black you mention above. The visa earns 2 ANZ rewards points per $1AUD. With a 2:1 conversion from ANZ to Velocity it ends up as 1 velocity per $1AUD.

        • Annual fee is $375. I'm considering this card as well (changing from velocity flyer)

        • Changes to 1.25 points to 1AUD. Converting to Velocity will be 0.5 velocity points to $1

  • I wonder if you would still get the $129 voucher in the first year (as you wouldn't have paid an annual fee)?

  • I have just applied and been accepted. Rep said that you will get both the 50% off flight deal they currently run ( up till 31 March ) as well as the $129 voucher when their rewards program changes. Also, they wipe the additional cardholders fee for the first year. Not the best, but not a bad deal in the end.
