Shure SE846 Blue Edition - $999 (Was $1,585) @ Addicted to Audio (Online & in-Store)

160

Found this great deal on the Shures Se846 on Addicted to Audio

Went down to Newtown on the weekend and picked up a pair, tried a few other pairs of earphones at the store. The store rep was very friendly and helpful.
The Blue unit is matt finish and looks great in person. It is also way more comfortable than I thought it might be.

Price is for Online and in store ( Sdyney and Melbourne )

They have some great reviews http://www.productreview.com.au/p/addicted-to-audio.html

$1k for some headphones! WOW! Would anyone who looks on Ozbargain have the sort of cash available to throw on a $1000 set of earphones (or want to spend that amount if they have the money)????

    • +4

I've always wanted a pair of custom molded IEMs and last I checked that'd probably be getting close to 1k for the Ultimate Ears I had looked at. Not that I've ever pulled the trigger and I have other priorities, but if I still used public transport daily perhaps it's something I'd consider. Now that I drive each day and don't visit a gym, I wouldn't get enough use out of them to justify it.

    • +10

Is it that different to buying a gtx 980 Ti for around the same price?

      • +2

for that amount of cash these would have to wash my clothes (and iron them) and do my bed daily. Thanks but no thanks haha.

    • +1

Says a community who thinks a bargain "beginner" MTB is $799 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/234758

      • "Beginner" in the same way as Bosch green tools are "beginner".

Your definition of beginner might be a kmart bike, which would be like Ozito or 909.

      • +2

For a beginner dedicated mountain bike? Yes, $799 is a deal.
For a beginner bike that looks like a mountain bike, but would break the minute you took it on an actual mountain? $799 is too much.

        • +1

Cheap MTB-looking bikes often come with a warning sticker saying "not for off-road use". I guess you can ride it on mountains that have paved roads.

    • -2

These should really be custom moulded at this price. Could fit a few more drivers in too. Haven't read reviews yet but thinking you're better off with different products if you're in the $1k to $1.6k price range.

(My reference point is owning $1k canalphones)

    • I hit the link and they're not even headphones, they're ear phones!

      Am I still on OzBargain?

As I learnt a long time ago on OzBargain it's not what you spend but how much you save.

Saving $586 per set. Ordered 10 thanks OP. Saved $5860 today with barely any effort.

      • +6

Yeah you could save $999 by not buying it! 😂

        • +1

I saved a lot on OZB but the amount of cash I spent not needing to spend… hahaha

    • +5

I just got negged for a harmless comment so yes I am on OzBargain. Lol.

  • +3

way more comfortable than I thought it might be.

You didn't think $1,000 in-ear headphones would be comfortable? Wow, your and my expectation differ greatly…

    • +1

Lol, well it tested to be real comfortable in the store, but I thought it might get unconformable if I wore it for extended amount of time. But turns out to be very conformable even after a few hours of use.

  • Shure-ly there is meant to be a decimal point in that price?

  • +5

These earphones are amazing, can highly recommend them if you spend a lot of time plugged in to audio sources. Use mine daily and could never go back to a lesser set of iems.

      • +1

        Kanye West?

    • What is your source for these, i'm currently looking at a headphone amp/dac (maybe the oppo ha-2)?

    1000 bucks for iem's :O

You can get an amp and fantastic over head headphones for that, and still have change!

  • -4

    Thanks OP. Bought 5!

  • twice as good as Bose 15 & sennheiser momentum?
they do have Sennheiser HD800 S High Resolution Open Headphones for $2,599.95 https://www.addictedtoaudio.com.au/product/sennheiser-hd800-…

    • wow, now thats way expensive

  • these vs xiaomi in ear headphones???

    • +1

      Definitely go with Xiaomi

    • +1

these if you were gunna spend the money on drugs & hookers anyways…

      Xiaomi if not.

    Thanks
They're also doing free shipping on USB cables - https://www.addictedtoaudio.com.au/product/wireworld-platinu…

      Monster has competition:

"The Platinum Starlight® USB audio cable is intended for the most discerning listeners and advanced audio systems, where its ability to reveal the natural timbre of acoustic instruments and voices is invaluable. The Platinum Starlight® employs the WireWorld's new, patent-pending DNA HelixTM conductor design, which uses six signal conductors - twice as many as other USB cables, arranged in an innovative symmetrical geometry that provides precisely balanced 90-ohm impedance, for performance that far exceeds the official USB 2.0 High Speed specification. The DNA HelixTM design maximizes transmission speed while minimizing noise, thus reducing digital jitter to provide substantial overall improvements in sound quality. Another special feature of the cable is a power conductor that is fully isolated from the signal conductors to preserve signal purity. Featuring moulded carbon fibre connectors and solid silver conductors for the ultimate level of performance, Platinum Starlight USB provides the most lifelike sound quality available from USB audio technology. "

  • I've used these and ultimate ears, but (profanity) me they're nothing compared to a good set of cans. These are uncomfortable for those who have to press, pull and fiddle with their ears often.

  • +2

"Do you want some Monster HDMI cables with that?"

    • This site makes Harvey Normal and Dick Smiths look cheap!

    • +1

Well you don't want your $1,000 headphones to be bottlenecked in terms of quality by playing out of something that's not made of copper…

We selected copper as the principal raw material for the newest variant of the AK380 to convey the message that this is more than just a medium for transmitting music - it's an “instrument”.

      Haha!

  • Niche market - 'Addicted' alright. I'm sure there's people out there with more money than sense. You gotta have some electronic hearing to tell the difference between this and a $200-300 unit.

  • +2

These are actually pretty good. They come with filters that allow you to change the sound profile, and can be disassembled, modded and put together again.

They also come with various ear adapters, so it shouldn't be too uncomfortable. You can always put your own custom ones on the SE846 if you are going to shell out $1000.

+Other bunch of stuff not worth mentioning.

If your set didn't come with any of the above, likely it's a fake you got off eBay.

    • These came with way too many ear adapters, different adapters do make slight changes to your listening experience.

    • +5

'Actually pretty good'? For $1000 they better be BLOODY LIFECHANGING

  • +5

Completely forgot about the blue edition on SE846, I remember reading about the release once from a forum.

Probably not the kind of deal that many, if not most, Ozbargainers will like, obviously visible from the comments. It's basically a high end product for enthusiasts of a hobby that is highly dependent on personal preferences or for professional performers on stage.

    • +1

Haha that's why I don't post luxury/high-end product deals here.

  • can get better ones for cheaper cant you ?? Like the New Fender ones.

  • How do these compare to the XiaoMi pistons that was posted last week for $6.99?

  • I have the Shure 535.. how does the 846 compare to it?

    • I used to have the Shure 535 as well in the red edition. imo unless you're serious about it, might as well skip it. Diminishing returns from there and you will need to have better sources. Junk in, Junk out.

The Westone W60 might be another thing to consider if you're really interested in IEMs within that price point or go custom.

  • I also like to casually go down to the local store on the weekend & buy $1,000 ear phones :/

  • -6

Something like this makes me hate humanity more and more.

  • Reads like an ad for the shop (perhaps written by the shop?)

    • LoL, Now thats funny

      • +1

Well you did put a link to a review of the store, and not to that of the actual product.

        • Yea, shouldve added both. I just like to check out the store before I buy anything from them, especially for after sales service. Have not heard of this store before this purchase.

  • Nice deal thanks OP.

  • +1

if i am after some serious reviews regarding a pair of $1000 iem, i certainly will not check productreview.com.au.

    • +1

LOL, that was for the store, as in looking at their customer service and after sales reviews.

      • +1

        fair comment.

  • +1

I have these earphones. I know people from ozbargin can't justify paiding $1000 but it well worth. The build quality feels like it could last 1000 years. If you have to really enjoy audio quality and use them a lot. It's well worth in my opinion. I use my earphones for everything and many hours every day. They are the great but I think I paid $950 for the originals. I had them for about a year.

    • Do you happen to know any place that sells cables for the 846?

  • +12

can't understand all the fuss, what's wrong with spending 1k on something you would use daily, as opposed to spending a lot more on lenses and camera that you might use once a week, or a holiday that lasts a few days

  • +2

If Kanye has these then so do I.

    Thanks OP

  • +1

Would these make my mp3s sound better?

    • +4

      Shure!

    • Would actually make them sound worse as they are not forgiving to poor audio sources.

  • If high-end headphones are really that much better, then why the heck is James Packer marrying Maria Carey.

  • +2

1k for headphone it is a bit costly but it's worth it. For those that couldn't afford please shut up.

  • Thats an expensive way to ruin your ear drums, definitely value right there!

    • In-ear monitors were first created to save the hearing of musicians by blocking external noise, which means you can run your audio source at a lower level.

  • I'm guessing you'll need an 30K audio source to make the most of these earphones?

    • Nope, even a $209 FiiO or $149 Schiit will help.

      • There goes the 'portability' aspect.

        • The FiiO hooks up to your phone. It's smaller than most phones and power banks.

        • Yeah that was my point. An additional device in your pocket.

        • @gimme: Just use your Phone

        • +2

@gimme: Your point was needing a $30K audio source to make the most of these earphones. You never mentioned portability.

If you're now changing the subject to portability, well, you can't get something for nothing!

Phones used to be tiny and have super long battery life. Now they're a lot bigger and have poor battery life - there goes the portability aspect.

But in return, you get functionality.

By carrying a portable DAC which isn't even that large, you gain better sound quality. Obviously you would only be carrying it to places where you can actually sit down and properly listen to music like a library or public transport, so you wouldn't be carrying it while jogging or shopping.

If you don't appreciate the better audio quality that's perfectly fine - not everyone can hear the difference, or cares about the difference.

Just don't forget that there are people who do hear the difference and can appreciate it.

These IEMs are for them, just like how some people are perfectly satisfied with the stock lens on their camera while others go for higher-quality lenses.

If you absolutely don't want to carry a second device, the LG V10 is meant to be very good.

        • +1

          @gimme:
I remember always carrying around a phone and an ipod and not having an issue with it.
Heck, I remember carrying around a Nokia 3310 and Sony CD Walkman. The cd skips were annoying, but it was hella portable and I could play snake while listening to music, on a bus… Crazy!
