Nice price, but I'd prefer a Chromecast for ease of use, size, compatibility & versatility.

Although I do use Chromecast for some displays in my house. However Chromecast has a lot of limitations though. e.g. cannot stream anything you want.

This is literally a screen mirroring device so you can stream any program you want.

      • Out of curiosity what doesn't the Chromecast stream well?

        • +2

RMVB and various misc formats on the internet which doesn't seem to be supported. It would be good if VLC got Chromecast support which they have said 2 yrs ago the next version will have, but VLC still doesn't have it.

Quality is better on the Widi device. But careful though as this one is Native Widi, you will need Intel CPU / Wireless and GPU to use it. The newer Widi is backwards compatible with Miracast which is similar but more laggy and works without some of those HW limitations.

        • @lplau:
There are many ways to stream RMVB through the Internet. If you go to the website using Chrome, you can cast the entire tab and play the movie in full screen, it'll appear full screen on TV too. If you've downloaded the RMVB file, use Videostream to cast it to the Chromecast.

I think the Chromecast has made this thing obsolete now.

Anything. Constant buffering, even when the AppleTV sitting 20cm away works flawlessly.

      • +1

There's a google chrome extension you can download that lets you pretty much stream anything you want, forgot the name but its a search away

        • +1

ya its called Videostream which is a plug in for Chrome.
However i find it a little flaky and latest versions crash on some formats.

        • @lplau: Yeah. It's why I was curious I grabbed a Chromecast yesterday and between Videostream and Twitchcast I haven't run into any issues getting reasonable quality playback so far.

        • The other difference is that you can connect directly to Widi and stream where as Chromecast requires the internet / router connectivity.

Maybe limiting for people who want to stream something to a hotel room. or somewhere which doesn't have any other network infrastructure.

        • @lplau:
Fair enough, the uses I have tried have all generally worked well, but I'm sure there are certain case uses where this would work well.

Regarding the Hotel scenario, I just stream directly from my phone to chromecast (both media stored locally & streaming). This is not something I would want to travel with.

        • +1

@ozdavo: Oh didn't think that worked…. i thought it always needed a connection to a router. Tried it once awhile back and couldn't do a direct connection. haha

Never traveled with this though, been using it plugged up to my monitor setup in front of the treadmill.

        • @lplau:
When you're in a hotel, set up your phone to be a wireless hotspot, then you can stream anything you want to the Chromecast.

        • @soupiejr:
Chewing up loads data for transfer to Chromecast or not?
Often wondered how to do that
Tried it on my phone at home when first bought CC and was sure it killed my data

        • @albanyson:
You can turn off your 4G connection once your movie's started streaming to the Chromecast. But by itself, it uses very little data, other than to download the wallpapers. I estimate no more than 2 MB in size, though I've never measured it myself.

      • I can mirror my whole screen to my Chromecast?

  • +1

Ebay selling AUD30 free postage. MSY still beating the price!

  • This 4 years old product. looks like very slow and lagging

    • +1

Its amazing though. Since its proprietary Widi Technology the latest driver actually makes it run so much faster than the alternatives like Miracast.

      • But its also this problem that means incompatibility with Mircast devices. I havent managed to connect any Android to mine as an example.. so I'd rather a straight out Mircast Dongle.

  • Didn't the take this chromecast off the market some time back?

  • Showing as sold out.

    • Click on the Store Availability tab, there is still a few stores which should have it.

Lol testing my luck with the Gerry Harvey online chat service:

Virson6:00 pm Sorry Gerry we don't match with MSY they are grey importers.
gerry6:01 pm Sorry are you sure? I would say Kogan are grey importers but not MSY 100%
Virson6:02 pm Yeah I'm sure. Kogan is considered an online shop only. That's why we don't match with them.
Besides that i think you will have a hard time trying to price match this item as it's a clearance item
gerry6:05 pm no MSY aren't grey importers. If that was the case the multitude of items there would have, for example, international power plugs however they don't
Virson6:07 pm They are grey importers you can't pay $19 for something that's $130RRP even if it was to be a little bit cheaper I don't think you can get that for $19 anywhere. Can you picture how much the actual manufacturer is losing from the sale as well as the retails store. Harvey Norman do not sell Grey Imports so if you buy from us at $130 you will have full local warranty as grey imports don’t

    • Harvey Norman, where the customer is not always right!

      • They should understand that grey importing PC components is actually not that lucrative anymore most you'd ever get is around 10% cheaper nowadays.

The guys at HN would say anything to not price match, i've had a time when they refused to Pricematch OW stating it was Grey Imports, and i was like "ARE YOU SURE?" haha it seems like thats their usual stance when people question HN's expensive prices.

Each Harvey Norman is separately owned franchise costing a grand total of $1. Bunavit is Bundall Audio Visual, Information Technology. Other names they've used would be things like Lectdnub. Bundal Electrical. Head office's company name is Derni PTY LTD. "In red" as in the accounting term, run at a loss or damned close.

Sometimes even within a store there'll be separate franchises. That means they're all small businesses who pay small business taxes and have small business employee obligations….with the buying power of a large company.

They can be forced to sell items below cost, so at a loss for that business, though Gerry still gets his 8%, and if they complain they'll literally be met the next morning by management who gives them a cheque for $1 and tells them to (profanity) off while changing the locks.

Even those who lose a franchise often stay with the company and if they play ball will often get another chance. As they're so profitable franchisees generally only get a few years at one location before they're moved on. Our local one is actually owned by Gerry's stepdaughter, or was, and from what I've heard she's a complete bitch.

Next time you hear Gerry complain about how unfair it is competing against internet traders and such remember all the employee obligations and taxation he avoids.

    • I tried price match at HN a few times for Sandisk Extreme Pro cards with no luck, basically if it's cheap they assume grey import.

The bit that annoys me is their website says it excludes "Offers that require delivery from an overseas based distributor direct to the customer". Am I missing something but even if it is a grey import to MSY it is not being sent from distributor direct to the customer therefore not excluded according to their terms and conditions?

    • I'm pretty sure that I got warranty from MSY for a stuck pixel on the monitor few years ago. I should call his argument is bs

  • businesses are not run for ethics or the public interest. profit is a powerful disincentive for businesses to tell the truth

    • Sell snow to Eskimos. This is a phrase that salesman love and aspire to. Its a mark that as a salesman youve succeeded to the highest echelons of the occupation.

Think of it from the Eskimos point of view, and it tells you all you need know about salesmen morals and values.
