$77 per month with half price access fee for your first month (-$35) = $1813. Handset RRP is $1149, so you're paying $664 = $28/m for 6GB of data and unlimited calls and texts, with the bonus of being able to pay your phone off across two years. Plus, you get bonus unlimited data for your first two months.

An equivalent plan on Telstra, Optus and Virgin comes out to $2376, $2040 and $2184 respectively, though you do get 8GB of data on the Optus/Virgin plans.

For the heavyish data user this is probably the cheapest way to get the GS7 on release short of buying outright, grabbing a Telstra Freedom Plus SIM and writing off your prepaid costs on a Dropbox subscription and Hearthstone packs. (which is what I'll be doing).

Alternatively, if you'd prefer the Optus network and are happy to lose 2GB of data, you can pay $13 less over 2 years ($75/m*24=$1800) and go with Virgin Mobile.

    Any similar deals for edge?

    • +2

Your best bet for the Edge is $80/m with 4GB of data on Virgin. Total of $1920 - $1250 handset RRP = $670 = $28/m access fees but less data than the VF plan. Vodafone doesn't have a similarly good value plan for the S7E unfortunately - the 6GB plan is $97/m, a whopping $480 premium for the Edge.

Either way if you can afford to buy up front I would recommend the Freedom Plus prepaid SIM I mentioned as you can spend what you pay on prepaid on the Google Play store for in app purchases/movies/books/music. Plus that way you can grey import to save a little extra if you are so inclined, and you're on the Telstra network.

Good post. Good research and info to help make decisions on possibilities

      • Negotiated with them and got Edge for $85/m with all the offers above.

      • Hey, can you please explain like I'm five how this Freedom Plus prepaid SIM option works out? What SIM do I buy, how much am I paying per month, and how does this magical Google Play Store credit work out?

        • +1

So something Telstra doesn't really mention is that when you get your Freedom Plus recharge, you get all the inclusions they mention plus the value of your recharge in credit too. You can spend this credit on a bunch of things, including extra data packs for your phone, but also you can choose "bill my Telstra account" in Google Play, which means you can spend this credit any way you like.. If you're already paying any monthly subscriptions there's a good chance you can set them up on Google Play instead and get them for "free".

The other good thing about prepaid is your data rolls over to the next month so long as you recharge on the lsat day before expiry. The downside is your call credit only lasts 28 days so you need to recharge 13 times a year instead of 12. You can frequently get SIM packs for $10-$15 with $30 included credit too.

        • @get-innocuous: That's awesome! Thanks, mate. Might have to switch.

Finally a New release phone at a good price point.. Don't see that much any more.. Good move by Samsung.. Theyve had it good for to long with the 3 differant gb mode tactic.. Can't believe Apple still gets away with selling 16gb models smh

    • Good price? The Xiaomi Mi5 is a good price. Apple and Samsung flagships are rip offs.

      • I mean the plan is at a good price point with a new model phone.. As for the cost of phones these days there ridiculous but aus$ is much to blame

      • Buy Xiaomi then :D

    • -3

Please go ahead and use cheap China phones that reduce RRP prices by ignoring all the legal patents.

      • +4

legal patents… like the things samsung and apple sue each other over?

      • Lol. Cold War type of prejudice.

Thanks for your excellent research. I dont have to spend tomorrow morning comparing all the deals now!

OK, if you are on the optus $40, unlimited calls and 10GB data deals, or the new telstra 7GB plans for $40 …… doesn't it make more sense to just buy the phone and not be locked in. If you break up the plan (call and data value) , and what they add for the phone there doesn't seem to be compelling savings unless you can't afford the phone outright and need to pay it off.
Seems the days when they added the phone for free to induce the lockin (sign up for 24 months)are over ….. now it's lockin and they charge a lot for the phone …… and just like the s5, the price will drop before the 24 months is up, so over the life of the contract not cheap. I got my S5 12 months after it was released for 50% off the release price as grey …… saved $400.

    • $37 x 24 in handset repayments (after taking off $40 for plan) = $888 for phone versus $1149 RRP. $261 + further $35 discount, almost $300 saving.

IMO worth it if you want to be an earlier adopter and don't mind the 24 months locked in with Vodafone. I'm just coming off 24 months with them having had a Galaxy S5 and will probably lock in again with this phone.

    • Just signed up to the Telstra Mx plan coming from Voda, had no issues with Voda and would have stayed but wasn't interested in 24mth contract again.

Bought the S7e in Silver outright, bring on the 11th!

    • Is there a link to this deal?

  • What the the diff between the s6 and s7? Don't really see much besides some minor upgrades and waterproofing

    • +1

SD card slot is the big one for me!

  • +1

Everything will become cheaper or better so no point for locking especially two years. Unless you don't have a thousand bucks free to spend right away.

    • +1

"Everything will become cheaper or better"

You could say that of any technology purchase.

For those who want the latest tech now and don't mind locking in this seems like a good deal.

Why would you buy outright if the phone will be adequate for the contract period and you effectively pay less for it?

      • "You could say that of any technology purchase."
exactly my point. never go into contract. for any tech. including fridges, cars.., can openers, etc

        • Why wouldn't you if it's cheaper to purchase in contract?

Most cars/fridges etc would be purchased in contract using finance which often means you pay more for the item through interest or fees, but if you are paying less such is the case here, then it makes sense to do so.

        • @Bullion Baron:
It's cheaper for some people. In my case, I used $15 for mobile calling and data each month so it's better to buy outright phone.

  • Locking into contract for two years for a new phone whose worth will be around $800 in few months is not always a good choice.i prefer to buy phone outright.VF plan mentioned by OP would be more attractive if 300 mins of international call to any country would be included in the VF plan which they dont offer now.Good post anyway.

Honestly, that's a blanket statement that doesn't always apply to everyone's circumstances. Firstly, the phone is subsidised by the carrier so it's cheaper than buying outright. You're paying for the plan and the network. The better they are the higher the premium. Secondly, time value of money. That $1.1k you're planning to spend day 0 can earn interest or sit in your offset account.

  • just remember as soon as the sim is inserted to a S7 the phone is Locked to that carrier… http://m.gsmarena.com/galaxy_s7_and_s7_edge_will_get_carrier…

    • As with all contract phones in Australia though, if this is the case it will be free to unlock immediately.

      • no, not true. All Telstra (and I thought other carriers) the post paid phones are Unlocked, only Prepaid phones are locked.
Where does it say you can unlock the S7 immediately?

        • Postpaid handsets have always been free to unlock, though you're right that most handsets come unlocked anyway.

This is an internal slide from an unknown carrier and is just what the article says - it's for simplicity, rather than creating a custom ROM for each carrier you can just create a handset which locks to the first sim (though the "you will have to set up the device again" is a bit strange, as that sounds like a factory reset would unlock it).

There's no indication that this will result in a change of policy for any carrier, and I have no reason to think that it would as the only reason for locked handsets is when the carrier subsidises a prepaid handset under the assumption of a certain prepaid spend.

I negotiated a better plan while upgrading to an S7edge with Vodafone, $100 a month with 20GB data.

"No problems. If you upgrade online with me today, I can match the Optus price of $100 per month and I'll give you the S7 Edge 32GB with unlimited calls within Australia, unlimited texts worldwide, 20GB of data, 120 minutes of international calls to select countries and unlimited international calls to 10 select countries. What do you think?"

I took the deal, I used the optus deal as leverage, the original upgrade plan was $98 with only 8GB data.

    • Did you have haggle hard….. They said no to price matching special deals for me…..

      • my contract is about to end and I was upgrading

      • As it was an upgrade the offer available to you will depend on your "value bracket" - an internal metric based on how valuable you are as a customer. If you're already with Vodafone your best bet would be to call retentions and ask to cancel your plan to see what offer they make you.

      • I called them on the day the preorders came out, they where happy to match the optus offer, $100 for 20gb. I called later on in the day to confirm as i didnt get an email and they said that they weren't price matching anymore.

        I guess i got lucky.

    • I also told Vodafone that I was switching to optus $130 plan ($80/month after student discount and home broadband bundle discount), so they offered me the GS7 edge on $130 plan for $90/month with the first two months free.

Also mentioned that my parents frequently call certain countries that aren't covered by the unlimited international minutes, so they gave me 240 mins instead of 120.

  • While I think the whole idea of forking out for new release "flagships" is foolish for the majority who do little more than facebook and selfies, this does seem a decent deal if you really must have one - and have decent Vodafone coverage.

  • best deal i think (for me anyway) is with Optus $130 + $30 credit so im paying $100 per month over 24 months and i get unlimited talk and text and unlimited international calls and 18GB of data.

transferring away my current contract with vodafone immediately i'll pay the ETF considering im paying $160 per month for only 10gb with an iphone 6s plus 64gb

  • No international minutes. Dang it!!

I just ordered an S7 from Virgin for $60/mo. Only $300 and 300MB per month but that's enough for me and works out to $12.12/mo considering $1149 RRP. I don't really feel locked in at that price and it saves me a big up-front outlay. Hope then phone and Gear VR don't suck.

  • +5

When figuring out how much the contract ends up costing, don't use the RRP. Who buys at RRP, anyway? This is OzBargain; we always see deals on phones. Looking at price history for S6 around launch period, which was about this time last year, the price outright was available at $900. So for those who are factoring in phone cost plus plan price, use $900 as the phone price rather than $1200 or whatever. You're only fooling yourself otherwise.

  • i thought doing oz-bargain way…port in and port out not lock in contract.

  • Student only offer - Get $5 off access fees for 24 months when you sign up to this plan online. In checkout, select student under occupation and add your student ID. Offer ends 22/3/2016. T&C apply.
