Narrated by Laurence Olivier and first broadcast in 1973 when memories of the Second World War were still clear in people's minds and the war's veterans numerous, over 26 episodes this unique series assembled these recollections, together with archive footage, to create one of the most powerful and successful historical documentaries ever seen. The voices of those that fought, worked or watched during the war gave each episode a vivid sense of what it was like to be there and was the hallmark of the series.

@gringo: I'm replying directly to your stupid comment

and hasn't happened to most of the civilized world for a long time.

        • @gringo: Civilised countries like the one where the likely next president wants to bring back "a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding"?
I fear we are much closer to a rerun of history than many realise. Would mandatory watching of this series help to prevent that?

          @Makoto:

Feel free to insert "" around it if you want. Have a nice day.

        • -1

@gringo: why would I insert "" around something when I can just quote it?

          that is "stupid"

        • +1

          @Makoto:

"civilized world" - there really is no such thing anyway.

      • +2

true. But I believe that if more people watched docos like this, and could put it in perspective, it will gradually happen less and less.
Sometimes you have to be optimistic about human nature.

        • -1

Its not like people back then didn't understand the horrors of war. World War 1 was the war to end all wars. People like us don't get a say in it, the decisions are made far from view by those with far more money/power and undiagnosed psychopathy.

          @artfuldodger:

I think the percentage of average people willing to line up to go and fight foreign wars is way less now, thanks to education and the gradual demise of nationalism. Shows like this are educational

        • -1

@effgee: The idea that 'things are different now' is quite brazenly optimistic. It's certainly not borne out by real world experience which suggests our populations are easily led and actively manipulated. Watch for yourself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eB046f998U

I remember watching this on TV as a kid in the 70's. It left a lasting impression. Looking forward to seeing it again. Thanks TA, yet again.

God dammit. I have so much work to do and I watch enough YouTube. More than FTA.

    Thanks, TA

  • Can it be downloaded?

    • There is 3rd party software that has the ability to download off youtube.

      • No worries. YouTube added the feature to make videos downloadable, so I was just wondering if it was available for these videos

        • YouTube has most definitely not added the ability to download videos.

        • @c0balt:

It works on Android. Offline videos.

        • @futaris:

YouTube Offline has been removed from the app for a long time, and even then hardly any videos supported it.

        • @c0balt:

It's still there. You need YouTube Red now though.

        • @futaris:

Which isn't available in this country.

    • Yes

Probably one of the best tv series made about WWII.. Especially the fact that it has senior commanders perspectives.

  • Wow this is amazing. I wonder if it was their attempt at reminding us of the horrors and dehumanisation of war, with the hope we back away from a WW3 that is very close to breaking out.

My other favourite is WW2 From Space. Dumb title, awesome doco. Essentially WW2 with surburb quality infographics and stats to help understand the scope of this dark time in our history. Free on Youtube in HD.

''WW3 that is very close to breaking out.''

Where you getting your sources m8?

      • The kaiser probably emails him on the dark web

      Free on Youtube in HD

Just post it as a deal - i think its the way of the future on ozbargain

      • +3

PC, I think you've made your point. No need to continually plaster your sarcasm all over the post.

        • -1

          PC is far from PC.

        • +1

No sarcasm was in that post TA - there was one suggestion and one prediction

Many on this site look up to you and aspire to emulate your bargain prowess

I fear that this post lowers the bar by allowing freely available youtube content as an acceptable front page deal through your endorsement of it

Surely people dont need to be told that there is stuff to watch at no cost on youtube? I mean whats next - free stuff to read on wikipedia?

I think this is a valid point (not to mention copyright issues) and while most will agree with whatever you say, many will agree with the points i have raised

        • @nocure: what does the second PC stand for please, to avoid any confusion?

        • +2

Waiting for someone to post Taylor Swift vevo youtube channel, coz you can watch her music video fro FREE there…

        • +1

@ahok: im looking forward to some of those rad "toaster unboxing" videos hitting ozbargain front page

  • +2

I was about 7 when this was broadcast on TV. The theme music was chilling then, it was my bedtime, and even now it's somewhat unnerving.

  • Thanks TA, I've just watched another doco, Apocalypse: The Second World War, watching this one now.

  • Thanks TA, keep up the great work!
Remember to use BS and DH filters instead of taking to heart the rare but irritating non-constructive puerile pap. It must make some feel pretty impressive when looking in the mirror.

    • What are BS and DH filters exactly - can they be applied to the said mirror?

  • Does this doco present a childish view of world war where the evil guys are presented as Axis, and the good guys are the Allies, and then they fight? As if the members of the Allied forces were all angels and weren't in it for economical/political gain. or weren't scheming to forcefully reign-in Germany who had become too prosperous.

    • The doco definitely not made by the Nazis or the Japanese people.

    • +2

LOL yeah Germany was SO prosperous after the treaty of Versailles…

      • I do hope that no-one is taking such innacuracies as facts here - remember that ozbargain is not a good place to learn history

    • What kind of disgusting human being would think of what the Germans did to Europe, or what the Japanese did to Asia as not evil?

      • Define evil

        • There's this little thing which you may have heard of called genocide.

  • Already have the BD version of this. Definitely the best series about WW2

  • Anyone else having issues with no sound through sections of it?

    • Which bit? Post a link with time and we can check

      • Happens in various spots on all that I have played or downloaded as if its being censored.
1:20 in on this as the British PM is about to broadcast something https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qr8alkWSDzE

        • They deleted that one would you believe!
"The World At War Episode 2 …" This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by FremantleMedia." Just search for that one…

VIRUS ALERT. If you want a virus follow the advice above from several members on how to download the series from youtube.
I can't believe people still get sucked in.
Inserting 'magic' in between you and tube will even infest a mac.
Wake up, or grow up people.
It really annoys me because its suckers who fall into these scams that encourage hackers to annoy the rest of us.
Down vote me i dont care.
    And yes, a great series.

    • Seek help.

All the videos appear to have been taken down following copyright claim by FremantleMedia.
