Vietnam Airlines will get you to London, Paris or Frankfurt for a smidge over $4k in J (with a 787 or A350 from Ho Chi Minh City). Fully $2.5k less than Thai…

    • yep a good price… though be aware from SGN to Australia business doesn't have lie flat seats. Not a big problem for a day flight, but for an overnight flight it's definitely a consideration. If I'm actually flying for business the lie flat is a must for overnight flights.
If it's a privately funded holiday in business then it's a great price!

      • The seats on the A330s SGN-MEL are angled lie flats. The 773 SGN-SYD is more of a recliner.

Last year I had an economy ticket to BKK on Thai and I was able to upgrade to business when I checked in for $495. Your mileage may vary on this but Thai seem to be pretty good with cheap upgrades on check-in.

I'd like to know how you managed that, the published rate is AUD$800. I can't see $495 for any Aus city. Every time I asked at check in, they always quote the published rate. It was around $500 about 10+ years ago.

Not much of a deal in my books, for a start buying points with Avianca will get you onboard most flights for $1000 each way(currently $630USD when they have the 2 for 1 promo). If you really want a saving, grab a cheap economy flight with Jetstar or Qantas for $500 up, then nest an Etihad return business class flight from Bangkok to Australia for $2500USD round trip, including limos and 2 stopovers, not to mention 30000 Velocity points and enough status credits to get you Gold status. Yes its the long way home, but in business with the A380 bar to Sydney, and bonus points etc, nice.

I recently returned from a 10 day holiday in Hawaii. The return tickets (4 people), accommodation and car rental were less than this.

As a regular flyer to Asia, I can say fairly confidently that this is a poor deal — even for Thai Airways. I have often seen their non-sale business class fare for around $3,600 (although I admit that haven't checked in the last couple of months). If you're able to be flexible with your travel dates and particularly want to fly TG, find dates where business class has plenty of availability then book the second-lowest economy fare (i.e. not W or V class) and upgrade on departure at the airport (it is dearer to upgrade from W or V fares). This will give you business class seats for around $2,800 return (obviously with some risk that you won't actually get a business class seat if it is subsequently sold out).

I've started flying with Royal Brunei. Even though they fly from Melbourne, I can get SYD-MEL-BWN-BKK return for around $1,800 in business class (economy using a low-cost carrier between SYD-MEL). The connection time in Brunei is 1-3 hours, or you can elect to take the flight on certain days which has roughly 20hr transit which gives you a free day in Brunei as the airline pays for your hotel room and transfers.

Also, TG's safety rating has slipped to 4/7 at airlineratings.com in recent months because of operational concerns. Royal Brunei scores 6/7 (Qantas is 7/7, for reference).

    • I started using Royal Brunei and disappointed when they ceased flying out of Brisbane. The airport was boring, but I enjoyed the rooms at the airport to grab a shower and catch a couple of hours sleep before the next leg.
