      A Harvey Norman salesman.

      • If everybody like us only search and buy cheap stuff from HN, they will like DSE :-O

In that case I'm in! Gerry, we're a coming, pricing error or no pricing error.

I still remember the epic deal from OW for $24.50
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/203047

        • @lplau:

That's the best but I have already bought two before that deal.

        • @lplau: For good & bad. It's a benchmark, where I don't want to pay more… and the deal hasn't returned :D

          Mad Deal!

    • Are you that UWA lecturer who also posts on Whirlpool?

You might not recognize this. It's called honesty.

  • since someone said HN franchisee has to cope with the sales HQ put to them, I felt guilty to getting deals that out of their pockets rather than Gerry Harvey.

    • Gerry Harvey

That is why he is so rich ….

  • I bought a cheap spare one on one of ozbargains deals but my original one still works well.

I powered up the new chromecast 2 last night and I'm not understanding the benefit of the extra $24

    • NEW cost you $24 …..

      5GHz WiFi.
      New design.
      That is all.

      • +2

Not quite, it's actually faster too. However if all it's doing is streaming video you might not notice - although the navigation parts and startup speed can be noticed.

88DE3005 (CC1) vs 88DE3006 (CC2) for the CPU doesn't sound like much difference, but the 2 is 2.5x faster.

Thing to realise is, it's essentially a browser - with the video decoded offloaded to the GPU side. However the browser still needs CPU horsepower, and that's where the speed difference can be spotted.

  • Post edited as 3 for $9 sandisks is already up

    • Gee they change prices quickly.

They were 3 for $6 on the weekend. There were pricing stickers ranging from $6.95 to even $12.95(!) in store today.

      • That was a pricing error which the honoured but now it's back to the catalogue price 3 for $9

        • Oh, ok! Glad I got my order honoured then.

  • Can I stream my iPhone screen to one of these? New to chromecast.

    • The simple answer is No, you need an Apple TV to stream/mirror your actual iPhone screen via AirPlay.
Chromecast is intended only to stream videos via apps (e.g. YouTube/Netflix) from your iPhone (perhaps this is actually wanted to do?)

The convoluted answer is Yes, with Mirroring360
This needs a PC running alongside a Chromecast, and IMHO defeats the simplicity of using Chromecast!

  • sorry if this is dumb question, but what is the benefit of using the chromecast with a smart TV?

    • +2

I guess it depends on what your smart TV can do. Some Smart TV's only have about 2 apps.
You can mirror anything at all from your Android phone with a chromecast.

    • Smart TV apps are usually not in an open environment, so it's hard for them to find developers to build those apps. That means there are a very limited number of apps available for your specific Smart TV. A chromecast on the other hand, works well with Android, iOS and desktop PC's (including Macs!) so a lot of apps are already available for Chromecasts. Youtube, Netflix are just the tip of the iceberg. You can stream Twitch.tv, play monopoly or just dance, show google maps on TV or a shopping page, or your album of pictures you just took earlier today from your phone, etc. If you have an Android phone, anything you can display on your phone, you can display on your TV with the chromecast. I just used it today to plan our family holiday together, me on my desktop PC clicking on all the links and everyone else watching on the TV making comments.

  • My dumb question (after futile google)…

Can I cast apps (eg BBC Iplayer) from an Ipad to ChromeCast? (double issue of whether it can cast the app from IOS and also whether it will use the Ipad DNS settings as my router cannot be modified).

Thanks to anybody who can offer support :)

    • +1

Not sure about the BBC app however alot of video apps are compatible from iOS.
      From memory youtube, crunchyroll etc.

  • @pash81 - ease of use, see a video on youtube or another app and play it at the touch of a button on ccast. I have three. Rent vids from Google, play them to a tv. Guests can cast as well.Share a screen from Chrome on PC/laptop or Mac.

@ycon. no not your iphone 'screen' but content from pandora, youtube etc etc, and keep doing what youre doing on the iphone/android while content plays on TV. Can stream a screen from Chrome, which is nice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdWJpHt1Xws

  • In store these were showing $48 today.

    • Just ask them to check their site.

  • Just grabbed one, heaps left at Harvey Norman Moorabbin :)

  • Ok. I purchased one and tried to cast 2 videos from my phone. Both had juddering and lip sync issues (as well as poor resolution).

Do you think HN would let me return this? If so, can I take it to a different store to the one that I purchased from? (new to Australia and consumer protection here seem awful)

    Thanks :)

    • +1

Absolutely, my first Chromecast was from HN, and I returned it no problemmo. Perhaps you'd be better off with the new model. If so, I'm sure they'd be happy to upsell you to the new model (but don't forget to price match).

      • Thanks :)
