Looking for a game to "wow" me, any suggestions?

Lately I am struggling to find games that really impress me and have me dropping hours into them at a time and finishing it in a matter of days. Hopefully some of you guys have some suggestions that might be up my alley :). One of my favourite charms in games is when you are rewarded for going off the main path, searching every corner for treasure (if it's usable items and not just 1/1300 hidden tokens)

Some examples of games that have met the criteria in the past decade-ish are:
Far Cry 3
The Walking Dead season 1-5
HALO 3 and CE
New Super Mario Bros Wii
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
Metro 2033 and Last Light
The Elder Scrolls IV: Obvlivion
Golden Sun and The Dark Age
Mortal Kombat: Deception
Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005)
Crysis
The Darkness
Gears of War
GTA: Vice City
Fable 2

The general theme appear to be FPSs, but this is not necessarily my preferred genre. Alas, the golden days of 3d platformers like Croc, Gex and Banjo Kazooie are behind us though, and I am left with less selection.

I am pretty opposed to online multiplayer games and indie titles. Strongly in favour of same screen multiplayer (co-op preferred) and genuine retro titles. The only platform limitation would be PS4/XBONE titles. EDIT: meaning I don't have a PS4 or XBONE. All other major consoles are far game, and PC is my primary platform. I just don't have the really obscure consoles like virtual boys and what not.

Any suggestions and I'm all ears! :D

UPDATE:
Of the suggestions I already own these games that I haven't played (more than 1/2 hour of at least)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series
Tomb Raider (reboot)
Theif (Gold and 2014)
KOTOR 1&2

Ones I intend to get based on the recommendations:
The Last of Us
Dragon Age Origins
Shadow of the Colossus
Maybe The Witcher 3, I have 1&2 so might just check them out more. Seems like I'd have no time to give the game a proper chance though.

Look into:
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Metal Gear Solid

Finish off:
Halo ODST
Zelda Ocarina of Time (yeah… I know… :$ I only had the gameboy ones growing up)

Ones I have, and played a decent amount of, yet legit remember next to nothing about:
Mass effect (was really sick and dosed up on medication, I tried continuing my file the next week but had no idea what was going on)
Uncharted (I think I was just burning the candle at both ends back then)
Might have to revisit these one day, but not really my priority now :p

Some that are suggested which I already have, and played enough to gauge properly. In general they didn't "wow" me, possibly had their moments though:
Fallout 3 and NV
Bioshock and Infinite
Borderlands 1&2
any COD edit: except World at War, I liked that one
Half Life

Thanks again to everyone who has replied :)

    • You've certainly sold me on it with your summary there. Certainly like a good love story tie in to grease the wheels of empathy to the characters.

      • I just finished this one myself and found it quite worthy.
Also notable is that you can choose to play a number of sections using stealth rather than brute force.

    • +1

      You had me at "Ostensibly"..

    • Is the 2009 "Wolfenstein" worth playing? I was given a physical copy of it back when I used to try to game on my cruddy old laptop. Wondering if it would be worth digging up. I didn't play it much as it ran terribly on said cruddy laptop.

      • It is not as good as TNO, however it is not a bad game despite a few rough edges. If you have it lying around, then by all means install it and give it a shot. Has some twists on the standard shooter stuff, but nothing mind blowing. One interesting thing is that you can't purchase it on Steam or other digital storefronts because the game has been in licensing limbo for years following the parent company's acquisition. A year after Wolf 2009 came out, the same developer (Raven Software, of Heretic/Hexen and Star Wars Jedi Outcast / Jedi Acadamy fame) brought out a similarly obscure / forgotten shooter called Singularity. I consider that a better game than Wolf 2009, and one of the better shooters from that year. Unfortunately in Australia you also can't buy it on Steam, although I managed to snag a digital copy through Amazon (I totally live in California guys, don't ask why I want all my packages sent to hobart…).

There is a pretty fun LP series on youtube from YourEvilTwin about Wolf 2009. The first episode is here.

    • Love the new order. Can't wait for its sequel to come out.

I'll try to mention some games others haven't mentioned yet.

You mentioned Super Mario Bros Wii so I assume you have a Wii. Nobody has mentioned the Operation Rainfall games: Xenoblade Chronicles (favors exploration), The Last Story, Pandora's Tower. I just finished Pandora's Tower and had a blast! Also Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 are amazing (since you also like platformers). 2d platformer Donkey Kong Country is also good. Also Little Kings Story. And playing as a scorpion or a spider in Deadly Creatures was a unique take on '3d platforming'.

For PS3: Valkyria Chronicles, Dark Sector (underrated). If you haven't played Okami during Ps2 days you're missing out, but can get it on Wii or on PS3.

For Xbox 360 unmentioned gems: Nier (best music), Deadly Premonition, Darksiders 1 + 2, Rage (FPS), Shadows Of The Damned, Singularity (FPS)

For PC: Undertale (retro style), Hotline Miami 2, Shovel Knight (for amazingly old-school Megaman-type gaming), Dark Void Zero (retro).

Also if you have a ps2, dig it up and play Persona 4.

Some of these games may not strictly fit your criteria but they have all made me say wow at some point.

    • Really digging the diversity in this list, thanks for the reply. Okami and Shovel Knight catch my eye the most there, I've seen bit and bobs of them in watch mojo top tens videos recently. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for a sale on Shovel Knight and perhaps raid my local cash converters in search of Okami me-thinks.

  • Remember to put down your controller once in a while and get some sunshine - some pretty good games are basketball and kicking the footy. You can get both for well under the cost of any new release game.

Also i ordered MKXL today - go get the superceded version, should be pretty cheap on ebay or gumtree

    • +3

Good advice, and rest assured I certainly do. Most of my time is spent chasing after or cleaning up after my son, he definitely keeps me on my toes and away from the computer. When I get some chill time not much beats a couple beers and a good game though.

  • Dragon Age 1,2,3
    Borderlands 2
    Witcher 3

All Games of the year. Mass effect probably not so much as it isn't very friendly in regards to exploration.

  • -2
    • Then make sure you get this year's Forza, and next year's Forza, and the year after that, and the year after, and then the year after…

And so on and so forth until you have 28 identical racing games with different numbers on the end.

  • List of some great Local Co-op (same screen multiplayer) titles on Steam:
    - Assault on Android Cactus
    - Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime
    - Kung Fu Strike
    - Pixel Junk Monsters
    - Jamestown
    - Dead Pixels

There's other great popular ones like Trine (1, 2…. 3 is terrible), etc. but u probably already know them.

    • +1

funny you should say that… Just played Trine last night for the first time. Trine 3. Haha, it didn't seems too bad though, it seemed rather fable-ish. Good to hear 1 & 2 are worth checking out!

  • +5

    Dark Souls 1 and 2

    • Maybe 1 but not 2, play Demon Souls and Dark Souls instead

  • Bioshock, Dark Souls, Fez, Batman Arkham Asylum, Tomb Raider, Sleeping Dogs

  • +1

I would say Witcher 3 would make you accompanied for a while as it has large selection of quests to complete. So far that is one of the best open world games I've played.

  • +5

Shadow of colossus on ps2 was one of the best games on the console if you can get your hands on it I highly recommend it

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_of_the_Colossus

    • You sure seem to be attracting alot of +'s. It looks interesting and the retro collector in me is rather excited by the apparent collectors appeal. But damn, that's a pricey PS2 game! Certainly will have to keep my eye out for that at the markets.

      • I was lucky and scored a copy at the GAME store I was working at that someone traded in, ICO on ps2 made by the same guys was fun too but its just as hard together your hands on.

As a retro game collector and if you have a SNES try and get ahold of Terranigma

        • Was this as Broadway nsw by any chance. A staff member there once told me a similar thing.
Also, shadow of the colossus has to be in my top 3 ps2 games. It doesn't have any side quests and there are about 16 bosses and nothing else but it's very gratifying. No filler just bosses and exploring the world. 5*. Awesome soundtrack too!

      • +2

Don't bother with the PS2 edition, you can get the HD version on PS3 along with ICO for ~$10 when it's on sale.

        • I was wondering what that edition was all about, well for the price difference I'd settle for that for the time being. I do prefer the originals in most circumstances though

      • The PS3 HD remake of Shadow of the Colossus is much cheaper, looks much better, and you can buy it digitally.

Though if you are a collector, as you say, the PS2 version is ideal. And no, you can't have my copy.

        • If I stumble across it for a good price I'd certainly pounce on it, but not about to sink market price into it anytime soon. I prefer hunting rather than collecting i suppose you could say. My best find was CIB Secret of Evermore at my local markets for $8 (also got Lufia, Lost Vikings and some others that escape my recollection). I've built up an extensive collection this way and only for a fraction of the cost of stores/ebay so pretty pleased with it.

  • +2

Where in the world is Carmen San Diego

  • I like the games for the story line cuz I am in performance directing. Therefore the best story lines out there (first person shooters):

    COD (all)
    Prototype (all)
    Crysis (all)
    Lost Planet (all)
    Battlefield 3,4
    Far Cry 3
    Section 8
    Doom 3
    Dead Space 3
    Time Shift
    Mass Effect 3
    Half Life 2

Maybe it's just me but each of the games above are the character / hero driven, caused by event or many events.

    • I notice you singled out Far Cry 3, and no mention of 4, like in my post. Is this from not play 4, or like me did you feel absolutely no connection with Ajay and his motives to randomly take arms and fight along side rebel extremists?

      • +1

yep, that's the reason. You need a strong event to be bad, which should do good :)

  • +2

I've been playing this awesome game for the last few years called "Real life"

currently I've been building up the number of children by creating 1 every couple of years. I've stopped at 3.

in the game you have do stuff like going to work and day to day things such as shopping and driving places.

it's pretty damn good, in fact maybe too good as I play it pretty much 17 hours a day.

and it's really realistic. like the resolution is awesome.

I don't know what I was doing with my self before I started playing it.

oh yeah, there is not as much killing in this game as you'd like :(

    • Thank you for being so considerate of my obviously violent, blood thirsty ways.

    • +3

Overrated. Too much minutiae, and not enough action. The designers were smoking something when they came up with this.

Of course, having said that, the child creation bit can be fun. Not sure it makes up for the resulting grind for what feels like a decade, though.

    • Reality is just a crappy game!

  • +2

Witcher 3 is a must play imho if you're into RPG and variety in your experience, you can jump right in without playing the previous 2 games and still be hooked (If you have time should play Witcher 2 because it is a damn fine game as well). Others worthy of mention include the Mass Effect series which is story and character driven (awesome franchise should definitely play 2 and 3); Metal Gear Solid V with its open-world military setting; Fallout 3 and 4 for the customization and immersive post apocalyptic setting; and the very underrated Deus Ex Human Revolution for the freedom it gives to the players when playing each mission.
    TLDR
Witcher 3 (2 as well if have time)
Mass Effect series (2 and 3 is a must)
    Fallout 4
    Metal Gear Solid V
    Desu Ex Human Revolution

    Have fun!

  • DOTA 2.

    • -1

He is only using crapsoles, not PC.

      • Oh wow, I better go edit the OP. I wrote the limitation would be PS4/XBONE meaning I have neither of those consoles. Any other major console from Atari 2600 to 360/PS3 (excludes fail systems like phillips consoles, virtual boy etc, I don;t have those).

PC is my primary platform and I have a decent rig, so no restraints on demanding games required.

  • I definitely wasn't expecting this many replies! Thank you all for the suggestions, they are much appreciated.
Still this theme appears to be The Last of Us so that is a definite must buy for me.
Probably Witcher 3 as the next most popular
Metal Gear Solid is catching my eye at the very least as the next in line. I'd probably be inclined to start with the first one though. Is the remake worth starting with or would the PSx original be the way to go?

Once again, I really appreciate all the replies. Alot of titles I have tried already and passed on continuing playing. Others I liked but in general didn't think they were worth writing home about. Then there are also the titles that have always tickled my interest but I've never taken the plunge . If not for the volume of replies and lack of time to do so, I'd reply to each of you, so thank you for those that took the time to make some suggestions.

With the average hectic work and family balance I'm sure a lot of you would agree, the measly few hours you can scrounge up for some game time you want spent on nothing but quality titles!

    • If you can wait a week - The Division offers something interesting, an RPG first / shooter second, but set in an environment you'd expect a traditional shooter to be in. I for one loved the Beta, and I'm looking forward to it.

If you can wait a few weeks, Dark Souls 3 will arrive - but that will be PUNISHING - it'll be the hardest game you've ever played.

As for the last 6 months - there's only one title in there for me, and it actually turned out to be one of the best I've played in 25 years of gaming….The Witcher 3.
You talked about being rewarded for walking off the path - the side quests are just as well scripted, acted, planned etc.. and in some cases even better than the main quest. I've never had a game stop me and actually make me seriously consider my decisions. Consequences feel real, entire arcs don't play out depending on your choices.

It's the only game I've ever finished, and then immediately started again.
Be warned - you need a decent chunk of time. I think my first play through was 130 hours. The first DLC was 30 hours alone, and that was the "small one".

      • oh… damn that kind of derailed my interest in The Witcher 3. I mean if I was 20 again, hell yeah. Apparently I had enough free time to drop well over 200 hours into Oblivion. The only time I sunk serious time into Skyrim was when I broke my foot at work, and since then have added a dreadpiratedan Jr. to the mix. I can't imagine I'd be able to devote enough time to it to really enjoy the game by the sounds of if. I think my expectations of it must have been rather naive :(

        • The positive thing about Witcher 3 is that you can pick and choose what you wanna do in your play session. If you have a short-ish session, maybe you focus on a Scavenger hunt/a few horse races/go sort out a contract. :D

If you miss out on Witcher 3, you won't realise it, but you would have passed by one of the most engaging games this decade.

    • Metal Gear Solid is catching my eye at the very least as the next in line. I'd probably be inclined to start with the first one though. Is the remake worth starting with or would the PSx original be the way to go?

I didn't really know exactly what the game was about and purchased MGS:phantom pain on the PC. Was so confused (naturally) about the story. However, it has a weird Japanese influence, which is why the story preceding the game is bugfu<k insane (not in a fun Saints row kinda way). Took me atleast an hour of reading around the Interwebz to get my head around the backdrop. Didn't really help much, as the storyline seems to be inscrutable (masquerading as actual depth). Thus, 2 hrs in I just gave up as I didn't really have any engagement (and the JRPGesque character models was irritating).

Ofcourse YMMV, since there are die-hard fans of the series.

      • As an actual Die-hard fan of metal gear, I have to say that 5 is the worst of the franchise, and most insulting. I'd go into detail, but people have already decided they're going to neg me through the floor.

    • I would suggest playing the Metal Gear series in its release order, starting with MGS1 on the PS1, and skipping the gamecube remake of MGS1. It has some bad rep because of the updated voice acting and gameplay which was changed to match that of MGS2's gameplay.

Unless you're a fan of playing games on their original consoles, there's nothing wrong with playing the HD remaster of MGS2 and MGS3 since nothing was changed, just updated textures I think. You could even get the Legacy collection on PS3, which includes all games in the series except for Ground Zeroes and MGS5 which are the 2 latest releases.

  • I would have suggested FREEDOM PLANET for WiiU, but I guess you don't have WiiU?

Cannot go wrong with RESOGUN on PS4!!!! The music! The visuals! The gameplay!!!!! WOW (bought a ps4 on launch just for it!!)

SUPER HOT on Xbox one is great too!!!

And if you have steam/PC - try DOMINIQUE PAMPLEMOUSSE - very original detective/ drama/ claymation/ musical game -er thingy!

    • Wow and a bizzare factor all way to the bgm?

      BAYONETTA 1 & 2!!

  • Super Mario 3d world Wii u

  • Rocket League. but you need some friends to play with..

  • +1

    Skyrim

  • Dying light is fun and even more fun co-op with a friend(s)

  • You should definitely check out "Kingdom Of Amalur: Reckoning"

It is the best RPG I've played. Great main story and SO MUCH free world exploring and side quests you can do - absolutely amazing! I've started it again from scratch, this time on PS3, played on PC first time.

Also good are Witcher 3 and Dragon Age as others have already mentioned, but I've played both of them and still think Kingdom of Amalur is better! ;)

  • +2

First symptoms you are getting old ;-)

  • Bastion.

  • Fire Emblem on 3DS is all you need. You will get addicted drop everything including work/school/study what not, and drop all other games

    • still prefer the original where you can married two classes that impacts future generation

Valkyrie chronicles if u like fire emblem

      • Jeanne De Arc on psp, and Valkyria Chronicles PS3 or PSP for number two. They are all very good. I'm enjoying fire emblem awakening.

  • I would say to buy a gaming PC and open up a whole other world of gaming, but if you don't like online multiplayer games then there isn't much point.

    • PC gaming is the only reason I can afford to game nowadays haha. But really, just about every title on console is on PC too so the multiplayer part isn't much of a factor for me. The only true "exclusive" I have any interest in is Halo so it's doing me just fine this generation.

  • This April Dark Souls 3

    • Still trying to finish Demon Souls!

  • OP get a girlfriend/boyfriend and then no more time for games.

    • What if your gf/bf is a gamer?

      • 1st world problems, good luck.

  • +1

    Zelda

  • Just stretching the parameters a little, have you given any thought to board games instead of same screen multiplayer?

Some easy games to start with are Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan and Dominion.

    • I don't mind them but it's sometimes challenging to get a group of people to all commit to seeing a game through. Usually the crowd will cap out at pictionary or trivial pursuit. Both good games in their own right but dammit it gets tiring only playing them.

  • XCOM
    EVE Online

  • +1

    What, no Zelda titles?

    • Oh snap! I totally forgot about Zelda. Well, Links Awakening would be my go to then. I've always preferred the gameboy/ds Zelda's than the console ones though. I didn't even realise Skyward Sword was released till months after thanks to Skyrim :p.

There would actually be a few more titles if I were to list all the portable titles I really liked. I just kind of categorize them as portables though so didn't even think of them. (with the exception of golden sun)

      • I loved Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages from back in the day. I'm going to try some of the DS titles now because I haven't played in years. Ocarina of Time is my favourite though - played it through so many times.

After being introduced to DotA when Warcraft 3 was big, I've found MOBAs far more interesting than RPGs. Pro-gaming is really taking off - I believe that streaming may be the future of gaming. If you've already played all the excellent, well-known games that you find interesting, streams may be worth a look. Of course, I still play, as well as watch the occasional game.

        • Yeah I had seasons and it was pretty mint. Only got a brief play of ages when I borrowed my mates copy. I may just have to buy it on the eshop :p.

I don't get MOBAs in any way, shape or form. I guess gaming has started to leave me behind.

        • @dreadpiratedan: never too late to start, mate! It all seemed strange to me at first too

  • Little Big Adventure (Relentless) and LBA2 - available on gog.com (i.e. retro)

LBA2 is a better experience overall but playing Relentless first means you appreciate LBA2 more.

  • +1

Dark Souls. I think its one of the best games of the last 5-10 years

    • Also recommend Dark Souls, and Demon Souls crazy hard but fun. Online multiplayer is awesome sauce. Agree one of the best.

  • +1

After playing Deus Ex Human Revolution, the next 3 games I played felt really stale due to the lack of choices. For example, I played Bioshock Infinity afterwards and it just felt like it was missing some non-violent options.

Then you have dishonored (NSFW) gameplay like this:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WuQvl2qp80
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DytAjtKOVSk

    wow.

  • Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition.

  • Uncharted and last of us.. Awesome!

  • FABLE I, most calssic. They kind of ruined it after that.

    Bully. R* game.

  • +1

Im suprised the Bioshock series inst really mentioned here.. bioshock 1, and bioshock infinite (number 3) are awesome. Bioshock 2 is skippable and is not required for the story. Fps with some slight rpg vibes.

  • I know the WiiU is almost dead, but its been one of the best consoles ive played lately mostly due to Nintendo franchises.

    Zelda HD remakes
    Mario Brothers series
    Xenoblade Chronicles
    Yoshi
    Mario Kart
    Pikmen
    Wonderful 101
    Bayonetta series
    Smash brothers series

Granted the graphics arent in the PS4 or Xbox1 realm, bust as for the gameplay, they are really good.

Metroid for wii was awesome to play with the remote controls. And can be played on Wii U.

    • Thankyou for actually mentioning Wonderful 101 in a Wii-U list. People omit it very frequently for some reason, but so far, to me, it's the best game of the entire console generation so far.

  • The most "fun" game I played that I finished a bit too quickly, but still really enjoyed…. Far Cry: Blood Dragon.

Probably helps if you grew up on 80's and 90's action movies though to enjoy that one, but not many games let you ride a dinosaur with a freakin' laser beam attached to it!

EDIT - Since Far Cry 3 is already on your list, this one may be too similar. I played Blood Dragon before playing any of the rest of the Far Cry series, which is probably why I liked it so much.

  • Max Payne would fit your current list - check it out.

  • +1

I highly recommend Life Is Strange (the feels…) and as others have said, The Witcher 3 and Tomb Raider reboot

    • +1

Life is strange great great. Such powerful story. The writing is the best I've experienced like a novel almost

  • Last of Us is must!!!

  • Old, but….

Descent Freespace 2- Best space shooter ever. People are still modding the game to this day

  • The Last of Us!
Brilliant story, immersive gameplay, and not overly long to finish.

  • +1

Dead Space series, awesome horror fps. I play fps almost exclusively and thought DS 2 was excellent.

Online game, counter strike global offensive (CSGO) is a great game.

Wolfenstein was ok, bit monotonous I thought, though a fun game to play.

  • Nothing will top the The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion imo.

Witcher 3 is the best game your considering. Just picked it up and have played 5 days worth spread over the last few weeks - brilliant rpg.

  • if you're looking for WOW! what about an HTC Vive and something like Hover Junkers. I've got a small pile of games that i bought and couldn't get into. Suspect that when the Vive is released there will be some serious games .. at the moment big developers are quiet but this is Steam backing VR. I ain't buying any more of them 2D games.

  • If you jump straight into Dragon Age Inquisition and Witcher 2 & 3 you'll enjoy yourself. Earlier games of those series haven't aged particularly well, and you won't miss out on much story wise.

  • My list is pretty thin:
    - God of War series for Playstation
    - Kingdom Under Fire series for original Xbox
    - Total War Medieval 2 and Rome for PC

I too love Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005) but it's more cool than 'wow'.
