  • Thanks OP :D

  • Absolute ripper! Thanks OP :) perfect timing!

    • No worries at all!

  • Finally a bargain that does not expire before I visit Japan, also I think this is alittle expensive with the discount still
DoCoMo 30 Day Unlimited Data Card: Normally $95, Now $76

    • Thanks for the feedback. We are always trying to get better prices we focus on value without compromising convenience and quality of network service etc.
We think it is beating competitiveness with all factors considered but we will try harder for you :) it is a notoriously low margin industry!

    • much cheaper than if you were with Vodafone for example and paid their $5/day int roaming costs :)

      • +2

Roaming has always been a rip off.

  • Bummer. I just ordered a 14 day sim from them on Sunday. :(

But still give them a vote as this is a good deal.

  • Definitely interested - given the problem we had last time in the US. Just hope that if we buy SIMS that they will be activated when we get there.

Looking for a Japanese SIM that will be able to be used around this sort of time next year.

    • These are great in that regard as they are self activating. APN settings might need adjusting but that's easy!

  • +1

What are the speeds of the 4G and when you are on 3G are you throttled to 128kbps?

Also B-mobile sells 14 day visitor sims for 2400 odd yen (~$30) at Yodobashi electronic stores or you can pick up the airport post office. What's so good about this to charge ~$22 more?

    • +1

I'm not the best authority on this, but yeah I think the prices are a slight premium compared to searching for a prepaid in Japan. I bought through them last time they had a 30% off + free express shipping.

That said, I'd prefer to have the sim with me when I land. Probably wouldn't pay the ~$22 premium, but I'd easily pay $15 for that luxury.

      • +2

Good point, but I think I'll save money and go with B-mobile. There's a Yodobashi electronic store straight outside Ueno station that likely anyone taking the Skyliner or JR N'EX from Narita airport can't miss.

        • +1

I used B-mobile for my trip last week. 2 week DoCoMo SIM, unlimited data for 2200 yen like you said. Got it delivered to my hotel, so was convenient. They also deliver to post offices at the airport. Would highly recommend to anyone going to Japan

Alternatively you can pick up a 30 day pre-paid sim at a Lawsons store for 2400 yen, but there may be a 1-2GB limit.

        • @mushroom33:

Thanks for the info, what speeds were you getting? Because the B-mobile deal seems exactly the same arrangement on the same network.

        • @plmko:
Sorry I didn't check, but I was able to stream YouTube videos and FaceTime my contacts with no issues.

I did not get reception in some of the more remote places I travelled in Hokkaidō, but I guess that's normal.

        • @mushroom33:

Is the Docomo network the recommended network to go with? I'm a first time grabbing a sim in Tokyo this trip… looking to travel from Tokyo up to Hakuba (not Hokkaido but i guess it'll be mountain alps too), onwards to Takayama, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Osaka etc. So looking for a network reception that covers the majority of Japan.

Are the MVNO's over there just as good as the ones here i.e. amaysim giving off good reception having used optus network?

And more importantly - for those that can't read or speak any Japanese how hard is it to activate these B-mobile sims that you guys bought previously? Are there english intsruction booklets, with settings/APN settings and the like given we will be all alone?

        • @mushroom33:

I arrive into Haneda airport - will there be a post office at that airport I can pickup from 3:30pm onwards? Is there a charge to use this service? Or do post offices ther ehave a system to 'collect' items? Just wondering how it all works given we're tourists, how do we go and collect our stuff? Is it very hard or inconvenient?

        • @SaberX:
I'm not too sure about the post office option because mine was delivered to my hotel. You can request for the item to be delivered on the day before 2:30pm, so you should receive it by 3:30.

        • @SaberX:
I was in Hokkaidō to ski, so was not expecting the card to work when I was in the mountains, but it did. sometimes I lose connection, but this was in the middle of nowhere (which I got accustomed to with Australian networks)

Good point on the settings though. you will need to download a network profile from a site provided in the instructions, otherwise it won't work (for iOS anyway). You will need wifi for this.

        • @SaberX:

Docomo is the largest in Japan, equivalent to Telsra. Not sure if B-mobile would have access to the 98% country coverage of Docomo as they are resellers. B-mobile does have an English phone hotline, there's a bit of a cost to call them but it's there for what it's worth.

        • @mushroom33:

my worry was not that it wouldn't arrive on the day, but that my 3:30pm flight if delayed could mean i miss the 5pm close of the post office to collect the sim :(

i've got a sony xperia z3, so looks like i won't have a problem downloading settings. So with android it's just adding an 'apn' which is pretty straightforward? Plus i think you can click the button to 'download settings' automatically from network provider, which seems to be what has worked for me in thailand, kl etc to get internet to boot up?

my only thing i can't work out is if our australia gsm bands for 4g/3g are compatible with the ones in japan.. cross checking to gsm arena for my d6653 model (xperia z3) but not my strongest point…haha

        • @plmko:

thanks for letting me know. Is softbank the 'optus' equivalent in that case?

So any reference to NTT docomo or 'xxxx' Docomo network, will mean one and the same? If anyone else knows for sure whether mvno/resellers of docomo networks get the full access to the network and the same download speed/quality - that would be much appreciated.

In aus at least from what i am aware of - resellers of optus like amaysim and vaya have always had the same speed as optus? Just the pricing and 'inclusions/allowances' that can vary?

        • @SaberX:

Not sure where Softbank falls in Japan, but they are also a big player in telecommunications. NTT and Docomo are one and the same company, with NTT being the parent.

As I was saying, even in Australia any resellers like Amaysim will never get the full access of the network, I'd assume Docomo will be the same.

        • @SaberX:

Softbank is the Vodafone equivalent (in fact they bought out Vodafone JP in the past from memory). AU is their 2nd biggest network but Softbank rose a lot in popularity in the recent years as they were the first to bring iPhones into Japan.

I've used B-mobile for years now when I travel to Japan and speeds are perfectly fine. While I'm not sure if they have full access to the speeds of the network, if you want to do any serious downloading/uploading I would recommend using hotel internet as many have gigabit fiber connections. Just have to hope that people are not all leeching it at the same time.

Regarding pick up, if you're worried you won't make it there in time, you can arrange for it to be sent to your hotel.

Edit: Also just a note, its also not about which network you want to go with - its whats available. Japan does not use SIM cards widely outside of iPhones due to their past and so finding affordable Data SIM is not easy. There's not a lot of options really.

    • I always use B-mobile when I'm in Japan. My partner lives there so she purchases the non-visitor sim for me which I think is better bang for buck.

  • +1

Went travelling in January, using a 14 day DOCOMO sim from last TSD deal.

10/10, awesome product, instructions were clear, delivery was fast and product was of a good quality.

Cheers Rep. Best of luck for your business, I hope to buy again.

    • Thanks heaps for the kind words and feedback :) Means a lot!

  • +2

DoCoMo is such a kawaii name

  • Oh no … my flight lands on the 1st June :-(. Ah well … lets hope there is another deal.
I checked the prices in Japan and it is a bit more expensive … but it's nice to have the SIM card in the phone straight away and it's worth a little premium.

    • +2

Will definitely hook you up closer to your travel dates! :)

  • Any deals/suggestions for a Hong Kong SIM?

  • Perfect timing! 3 weeks in Japan early May!

edit: OP - do you not deliver to PO Boxes?!

You let me select it on your site then PayPal won't accept it.

    • Hi mate! We definitely do. It must be another kind of error. Please retry and if it doesn't work email us a screenshot of what's happening please. have had a few PO Box orders tonight already!

  • Just gonna upvote cause I got a LG G2 Docomo phone as well haha.

    • Hahahaha you're too kind!

  • Newbie question, does the simcard compatible with Iphone 6?
If not, can we buy phone in australia?
Can we use the docomo sim card in japan to make phone call? or is it data only?
I plan to go to japan in a few months, but not sure if we can use sim card in there?
    thanks in advance.

    • +2

Yes, it is compatible with the iPhone 6. You need to request a nano SIM.

This is a data only SIM. It should work fine in your iPhone.

Not sure if there are many (or any) ways to get a SIM you can make calls with in Japan for a tourist easily.

    • cyssero pretty much summed it up! Thanks cyssero. Unfortunately Japan only allows data sims for non-Japan permanent residents :/

  • Hey rep any deal for NZ?

  • Thanks for the update, we'll be buying two for 7 days before we go in July

    • You're very welcome!

  • Damn it! I need one for the second half of June! Great deal though!

    • +1

I'm sure closer to departure we can do the same then :)

  • Just ordered. Thanks for the deal. Hopefully better than the woeful WiMAX I used last time

    • We will make sure it is :)

  • YESSS! THANKS! Ordering a couple now!

  • +1

If you don't need unlimited data you can get the same thing (I think) from http://www.yokososim.com/ and for example, pick up a 4GB SIM with a 31 day expiry for $45 delivered to AUS free before you go.
Outgoing: Maximum 150Mbps, Incoming: Maximum 50Mbps (only throttled when you exceed your 4GB)
15 day expiry with 3.5GB data is $40

    • Hi - i like the look of the pricing. Is the network coverage, speeds and compatability of yokoso identical to any other MVNO like so-net, b mobile etc. since technically they all use NTT docomo's network? SO they should all be identical apart from pricing and their allowance inclusions and customer service???

Can you top up your data if you use the 4gb up before 30 days are up?

I am thinking of ordering the 30 day one, regular post states 10-11 march arrival per ebay - which cuts it close for me departure wise. Can you comment on how long delivery by standard post took you?

Assuming per their website you need to setup APN on your phone before departing, but otherwise pop in the sim once arriving in japan and you're good to go??

      • Yeah i'm not sure about topping up. I looked and couldn't see any reference. However they do say that if you exceed the limit it then gets throttled so I guess it means you will still have internet access but just slooooow access. Once there, you can always go to a convenience store, BIC Camera or the like and just get another prepaid data sim. Alternatively, Yokoso has a 5GB version for $55 if that helps?
I purchased mine on the 23rd Feb and it arrived lunchtime on the afternoon of the 29th.
I would just do it on arrival as it's pretty quick and easy to do. Maybe while you're sitting on the plane waiting to disembark?

        • Foreigners don't need a passport carried around to pop into a convenience store and pickup a prepaid sim? so any bic camera, yobodashi or convenience store you could pickup a prepaid sim essentially? Or must you look for a data only, tourist sim (as we're not allowed for voice calls etc?)

You bought yours through the ebay site - only method for australians correct? What city are you though for it to take that long? As i'm on the west coast.. i believe they ship from syd?

        • @SaberX: Yes i don't believe you need ID to pick up a data sim. However, it is a legal requirement to carry your passport with you at all times in Japan. If the Police stop you for whatever reason and ask to see it (incredibly rare) and you don't have it, you'll be escorted back to the station.
It's really no different to using WiFi so makes sense you don't need an ID to get one. Any of those stores or convenience stores will have them. It'll come down to preference of SIM for you.
You can get a data and voice SIM (this is an option http://www.bmobile.ne.jp/payg_sim/) but you have to rent them which means you have to return the sim (or phone if you rent an entire phone). For that I believe you will need ID and there are not many options available to you and it adds to your cost. Just use a payphone if you need to make a local call. Or use Viber, Talk, Messenger, Skype or the like to make calls.
Yes, i bought mine through the eBay site. I'm in Melbourne. Luckily, it's 2016 so unless you're out in the desert i can't see that it will take any longer for you to receive it.

  • +3

YOKOSO (http://www.ebay.com.au/usr/yokososim-au), also on the DoCoMo network, offer:

    • 15 days 3.5 GB for $40
    • 31 days 4.0 GB for $41.50
    • 91 days 5.0 GB for $55

Free shipping within Australia. I received mine in 2 days.

If unlimited data isn't a priority, these are probably a better option since they last longer and are cheaper.

    • +3

If you don't need much data, JAPAN TRAVEL SIM is better rate.

      • 2790yen 1GB 30days
      • 4082yen 2GB 3month

      http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/switch-language/product/B00SMTG9G…

I always use so-net prepaid on amazon and send it to accommodation in Japan to receive it on the first night. The same so-net SIM is sold at airport but that gives lesser data. So better buy it from amazon.

      http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00LL3QBI0/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1…

      2GB/30days 2832yen is good price.

      • I bought that one last two times I was in Japan (going again mid-May). I get them at Yodobashi Camera, what do you mean 'gives lesser data'? Yodobashi sells 2.2GB so actually slightly more…

        • Yodobashi sells so-net prepaid 2.2GB for 4000yen or 1.0GB for 3000yen. So, you get best value buying from amazon.

        • @yasui:

any reason to go so-net over say yokoso sim? That's around 3,350 yen for 4gb for 30 days? So why would one pay 4000 yen for 2.2GB only - i assume that lasts only 14 days or at most 30 days??? both use NTT docomo network so coverage, download/speed should all be the same corrrect? And they should both work in same mobile phones?

        • @SaberX:

so-net offers better value when purchased from amazon. It's 2832yen for 2.0GB if you buy it from amazon. If you buy it from airport or shops such as yodobashi, 2.2GB for 4000yen.

    • +1

Came here to say exactly this, doesn't seem like much of a deal to me.

Also many places you stay, especially AirBNB will have pocket Wi-Fi which works just as well.

      • isn't Airbnb a accommodation site? it sells wifi?

        • Almost every place you stay will have like a tiny router with what I assume is a SIM in it which you use for WiFi both in the place and out and about, it is free and works great.

        • @mezje:
But that sim needs to be in the machine so the other people in the house can use the wifi….. so every time u leave your room u take the sim and don't care about everyone else in the house?

        • @suicine94:

i see it advertised in accomodations alot - free pocket wifi. They must get some sort of decent price to be able to store afew devices and provide for free to guests that are staying??

So yes, people would take the device and sim with them, other guests would use their own pocket wifis or internet that they've organised?

        • @suicine94: Yep it's a pocket wifi that you are meant to take with you. Typically in the Japanese Airbnbs you aren't staying with anyone else so it's yours to do with what you please. I'm guessing shared places may offer multiples for all guests?

    • Did you ask for express shipping? Standard shipping says it'll arrive by 10-11 march if i order today? i'm abit scared as i leave on the 15th the following week, doesn't leave much time…. can you please advise?

      • I chose regular shipping and it arrived in two days. I am in Sydney and the return address was also in Sydney.

        • DId you find the yokoso sims easy to activate? i'm on android. They're on ntt docomo network so i assume the network coverage is just as good as any other docomo network mvno - i.e. bmobile, so-net, and any others mentioned on this page?

abit confused as people seem to mention a 4g Data limit before it converts to 3g? or is the full 4gb for 30 days for example unlimited at 4g speeds?

        • sorry - one question: can you recharge if you use up your data with yokoso sim easily? or once you run out that's it, you need to have ordered a second/new sim?

        • I have no experience with other MVNOs.

4 GB at 4G/LTE speeds (50 Mbps) to be used over 31 days. If you go over that quota, your speed is capped at 256 kbps.

I don't know if you can recharge (I never have), but their website (http://www.yokososim.com/) seems to suggest that you can.

    • drats the $41.50 don't show on the ebay website anymore? Is that because special isn't available or do they only have one or two sims so the listing disappears once it's bought?

  • +8

Guys, this is rip off! You can get unlimited 14 days NTT docomo at 2380yen ($30) only.
    http://www.bmobile.ne.jp/english/index.html

    • Yeah, I was actually just looking at these before I even saw this.

      • Realising that this sim card is only very new on the market.

I suppose it really comes down to if you want the sim before you land or if you are happy to wait until you get there to pick one up.

I used Travelsimdirect and was ready to go as the plane doors were opening, couldn't fault them.

However next trip I will use the bmobile one likely as that is a winning price. Also as a note if you read the T&C about that sim if you use in excess of 1gb in 3 days they may limit your speeds.

        • New on the market?

          Are you kidding?

          I've been using B mobile's visitor sim since 2011.

        • @nismo:

So B mobile have always offered UNLIMITED data for 14 days? I think not. I was talking this sim card (product).

          Old visitors sim:
          - 3g speeds (?)
          - 1Gb Data for 14 days
          - 3980 yen

          New visitors sim;
          - 3/4g speeds
          - Unlimited data (possible data limiting if using more than 1gb over 3 days)
          - 2300ish Yen

The last time I looked (September) the old visitors sim was still the only option, forcing me to make the deduction that the change was recent (and too lazy to find exact dates).

        • @Baa:
          Fair enough.

It was difficult to tell from your wording of "sim" what you meant exactly.

There were 2 options though, unlimited data at throttled speeds or full speed 4g at 1gb or whatever it was, both for 14 days (with the option to recharge).

I do think their current offering is much better value than before. I guess market competition has caused this :)

  • +1

Does anyone know much about these Docomo MNVOs? They are half the price.

    http://www.bmobile.ne.jp/english/
    http://umobile.jp/d/lp/prepaid/eng.html

… And there are others too.
    https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/japantravelfaq#japantravelinte…

    • I know people who used bmobile without issue.

      • How about this Yokoso sim that someone posted above - it's also docomo network???

If it's a MVNO it should be the same quality reception as any other like bmobile right? Minus their inclusions set by themselves may be different?

  • +2

Bmobile visitor sim that you can buy in Japan is better value.

  • Going for a 3 week holiday to Japan - is this the best deal?

    • +7

No. This is a better deal: http://www.bmobile.ne.jp/english/index.html order it to be delivered to the airport post office for pickup on arrival or delivered to your hotel. Or head to a number of the big electronics store to buy it once you are there. It is for 14 days and then you can recharge it again for another 14 days. Will work out at about $53 total for 4 weeks access. Obviously more than you need but can't recharge for less than 2 weeks. Still works out $23 better than the 30 day sim offer here.

Good info and links, thanks! We do pride ourselves on providing the most convenient and reliable products and support. For a bit more our customers get piece of mind, convenience and extra support. We deliberately create some overheads that add to the convenience and experience of our customers. Rentals etc arent for everyone (neither is ours but we try our best).
        Thanks again for the feedback.

        • -4

Paying more for convenience is very un-Ozbargain.

        • +6

@yasui: A long relationship with OzB'ers and pretty damn good feedback for a long time would disagree with you there my friend.

        • I see it as time saved at my travel destination … when I calculate the accomodation and flight costs per hour I guess I will be better off buying the card here. But everyone values time a bit different.

        • B-Mobile and Yokoso both provide excellent support too. B-Mobile even deliver to hotel rooms.

        • @mini_wombat: How are you saving any time when you can have it delivered to your hotel room?

        • @dwhes: By having it ready to go before I leave the airport instead of waiting the couple of hours it takes me to get to the hotel?

I will probably use bmobile in future mysself however for a first time traveller to Japan I think this is one less thing for them to worry about.

        • @dwhes: As I might need my mobile with GPS and data to find my cheap 80$ AirBNB which I just booked … and I am 100% sure that I have a card.

As said the direct way buying in Japan will be cheaper. It's convenience for the 23$ more. For some people it will be worth it for some not. I personally might do a combination of both as I need 2 cards … get one card here in Australia. And one card delivered to the AIRBNB host.

A negative vote is maybe a bit harsh … but on the other side I see that there is a cheaper option and this makes people aware of it so they can select.

        • @Baa: Fair enough. Still doesn't make it a deal in my books. And if you really need it before you get to your hotel, pick it up from the airport post office. Very easy to do. People can spend their money how they like but there are better options out there than this deal. Also I'm not associated, don't know why it says that next to my name. :S I must have selected something when I down voted or something? p.s. Their normal prices are a massive ripoff considering how expensive they are after the 20% discount. I just want others to know that there are better options out there that are basically just as convenient at a far better price.

      • +1

The B-mobile one says "To maintain service quality for all users, JCI reserves the right to restrict the data transmission speed for customers who have used more than approximately 1000MB over three consecutive days including the current day."

Users have reported that this is more or less automatic once you hit the 1000MB.

I'm not sure whether the restriction is from 4G to 3G or to something else - the website doesn't say. It also doesn't say for how long the speeds are restricted

This one being offered (travelsims) has a 200MB per day at 4G then drops to 3G, but presumably back up to 4G the next day.

That said, 3G speeds presumably will be fine for most people most of the time.

        So that is a factor.

  • First 200MB per day at 4G speeds then unlimited 3G Data - how fast is the 3g data??

    • The 3G speed is typically anywhere between 256kbs and 2-3mb depending on where you are and handset etc

  • OP - do you provide SIMs for any other countries?
