    Would buy except for display

  • Good buy for a basic machine for school or home duties. Throw in a $100 SSD upgrade for snappy performance.

  • Hi Guys, looking for a Window-based laptop.

    Is this a good deal:
    Dell XPS 13 Silver 6th Gen i5-6200U 256 GB SSD 8 GB RAM 2.80 GHz Win10 NEW $1899 x 0.8 = $1519

    • +1

The XPS 13 is a fantastic laptop, winning all the awards at the moment. If you are willing to spend that much on a laptop then yes, take advantage of the 20% off and go for it :) Just be aware you can usually get equally good specs in cheaper laptops, so in that respects its not a great deal.

      • Anything you would compare it too with the same specs at a cheaper price?

        • struggling to find anything with identical specs, coz its rare to find 256GB SSDs in i5 laptops, usually they are reserved for the i7s which are more expensive. Also, to be clear, i'm not saying its a bad deal. If I saw something with same specs for $50 cheaper id prob still go the dell coz i know its a good laptop.
However, as an idea, just browsing MSY, theres an Acer with same CPU, same SSD, FHD Screen, but only 4GB RAM for $899. Spend $50 on another 4GB RAM stick and you have same specs for $570 cheaper…
          Link http://www.msy.com.au/waonline/notebooks/16493-acer-v3-372-5… Looks ugly :/

        • @Riczter:

I'm torn, I'm a basic user who isn't very tech savy but the ones that keep getting recommended are the Dell XPS range and then this Dell Inspiron 15 7000u i5
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/238048

The Inspiron doesn't have the SSD but getting one of the XPS models I would need to also but an external drive as 256 won't cut it. The build quality looks better on the XPS but is it more powerful and will it last longer than the Inspirion.

I'm a console gamer so the graphics card means nothing, all I really do is web surf, watch youtube and word processing. I don't any movies or TV shows, ill watch them on TV via my external. I suffer badly from dry eye and eyelid issues and the TV is more forgiving.

I was off to JB to try out both today but major road works took out all the buses and left me housebound as my eye conditions prevent driving. The thing about the Inspiron that has me worried is the average reviews for it keyboard. Nothing worse that a dud of a keyboard. The XPS gets big ticks in that regard but I've only ever had 15' inch screens and the 13 may be too small, also the 15 is way out of price range. The XPS 13 probably is as well but the Inspiron just hasn't ticked all boxes yet.

This is bloody stressful lol. How often do these deals come up? Am I better just waiting things out a while?

        • @VLine90: Haha, these deals come up every few months so don't stress too much. I will always recommend a laptop with a SSD as the primary hard drive. For me its the difference between a laptop being a joy to use, or a pain. But for just basic web surfing and youtube etc, all you need is something basic, maybe a basic ultrabook with i5 cpu, 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD. These are pretty common around the $700-$1000 price point, i think you missed a couple of decent ones in the ebay deals. Something like the Toshiba Kirabook might be good to go for. With your eyes I don't know whether a 15" screen might be better. They are rarer coz ultrabooks are usually smaller, but they do exist. This kirabook is good because it has a Full HD screen, which gives you the option to scale it back to increase magnification if needed.

Here's the link to the Kirabook which is still going until tomorrow. Got 93 votes! :P https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/238838

  • Can I claim GST for this if I travel out of Australia?

  • dangit i was just about to buy this when it said out of stock - anyone know of a similar deal - price for specs? I've had a dell several years ago and it turned out be a nightmare, don't know if they've gotten better. Currently with an HP a few years old and its overheating like crazy and literally falling apart at the hinges. I've heard Lenovo and Toshiba can be decent…?

    • It's back

  • Was able to put one of these in my cart and get all the way to payment stage (after entering discount code).

Code and price still work and item is in stock? Maybe this isn't expired after all?
