eBay Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm F4-5.6g ED VR II Lens $177.60 Delivered @ Kogan eBay

130
CTECHIE

Hi

For an absolute beginner like me who wants to get an entry level telescopic lens for his dlsr Nikon 3300, I decided to grab the 55-200mm vrii lens after much research. This will compliment my current 18-55mm vrii lens.

Just wanted to share the deal to other ozBargainers who isn't interested in shelling out big money and are just beginners-amateurs like me.

Perfect timing for eBay with the 20% off using coupon.

Note its Kogan that will do a grey import from HK. Warranty will have to go thru Kogan if there are any issues.

I was originally aiming for 2nd hand ones but the 55-200 vr 1st gen are still selling for $100-125 on eBay based on my last 2 bids. For a little more I get a brand new 2nd gen vrii lens.

Hope this will be useful to someone.

But F4-5.6 is normal in this price range and focal length range, doesn't matter if it's Canon, Nikon, Sony or Tamron. F4.5 is a typo though, it should be F4-5.6G.

      • -4

Sure, but still, without a tripod your shots are still going to be fuzzy. Which kind of defeats the purpose

Not impossible to use. But limiting.

        • +6

If your lighting is good and your shutter speed is higher than your focal length (ie. 1/125 @ 100mm, 1/250 @ 200mm) you'll be fine mate.

        • +1

I was debating to get a 55-300mm but that would even be more limiting plus the fact I don't believe I will ever need to use up to 300mm for my photos.

Reason for vrii its lighter and won't break my bank. Better spec lens will easily be an additional $200+ which would be too much for my bank account.

        • +2

          @Aeongrave:
Yup. It's always depends on how much light you got. I regularly use my nikon1 with 30-110mm on 110mm + 1.9x teleside converter and have no problems with shaky shots during the day. This is effectively 210mm with 2.7x crop factor. Sharp images at 1/400 ish shutter speed and I think can even go slower if held steady enough as well as making use of its VR.

I'm considering looking for a 55-300 lens atm with ft1 adapter actually.

        • +2

What is the alternative though? Does a beginner really need to spend $2500+ on a telephoto zoom lens? Because if one wants Nikon then that is the only alternative. Under many conditions it is possible to take sharp, hand-held shots with the OP's lens.
For the price it's a good lens. And OP has posted a good price.

        • +1

          @blahman:
Good Guys has their 55-300 on sale at the moment for $295, then a further 20% off via their eBay store.

        • +2

          @andrew1879:
And another factor is that if you want a really fast telephoto lens, your lens is going to be huge.

        • -3

          @andrew1879:

I feel that this lens would give subpar images and in my opinion would be wasting 170 dollars.

You are welcome to an alternative opinion

        • yeah was considering this also, but not too sure which would be the better lens to get

        • @bwilso06:

If your looking at based on focal range alone you should check this site for a guide
          http://www.althephoto.com/concepts/lenses.php

However there are other factors you have to consider so it's your choice in the end

        • @blahman: Do you currently own a FT1? I have a FT1 and it really handicaps the focus on the Nikon 1 cameras, reduces it to single AF point and it stutters along (this is with fast primes, 50/1.4, 35/1.8, 40/2.8 macro)

        • @sagiballs:
How about an informed opinion (actually used the lens), and not how someone feels?

        • -4

          @Max Power:

Ok. Buy it and let me know.

        • @luztra:
          gone up to $350 for 55-300mm :(

      • Thanks. Tried to edit the title but it's not working for some reason.

Just copied and pasted from their eBay page

    • +1

F4.5 is a deal breaker mate
You'd need a tripod for this

From a comment like this we can only assume that you don't own or haven't learnt how to use anything more than a point and shoot.

Many people start out with something like this and take shots they're more than happy with for the price of their gear.

While this may not be everyone's preference, claims like yours do nothing but show your lack of knowledge.

  • +3

An informed opinion about the lens.
    http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/55-200mm-vr-ii.htm

  • Any reason not to get this from Kogan?

  • F4.5-5.6G mate?

    • Finally fixed the title on my pc

Think they were abit slack in doing the page because not only the title was incorrect, the product info was wrong but the item description is correct.

      Go figure.

  • I got my Nikon 18-140 from Kogan works fine no issue and was brand new. I also got it on one of those previous eBay 20% moments.

only reason not to get it from Kogan would be if Nikon have cash back offer then you would need to do the maths.

  • Just an update on my purchase it actually arrived today from HK. Pretty impressed it took only 5 days.

Did a quick try and I'm pretty happy with it so far. The shutter speed trick actually works like a charm. Thanks for that.

I'll bring it along next weekend and take some random stuff to test it out. :-)

    • Still don't know if i will need a 200mm lens or a 300mm. Don't want to go buying the 200mm only to find the reach isn't as long as I'd have liked.
Would like to take shots at the beach of the surf

      • One of the perks of getting the 200mm vrii was the lens being so small compared to first gen and 300mm, portability is really nice and pretty light.

Pretty happy with it so far. Wish I can help you do a comparison but I don't have a 300mm to compare with.

I'll take sample 55mm vs 200mm shots for you though in a few days to help you decide.

        • need to make my mind up quick smart, 20% off sale end tomorrow

        • @bwilso06:
          This might help:
          http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/lens/simulator/
Make sure to select DX for lens and body.

        • @Max Power:

That's really handy to look at.

        • @bwilso06:

Here is my two shots I took yesterday. It was just for testing. Nothing fancy just testing focal length from 55mm to 200mm.

          Hope this helps.

        • @Max Power:

haha wow that shaw academy course used that same pic!

        • @bwilso06:

i am also torn between getting a 55-200 or 55-300.

i am new to the dslr world, just got the d3300 with the 18-55 lens.
took some shots of my sons football game on the weekend and the 55 obviously wasn't enough.

Anyone got an opinion on whether 200mm would be enough for things like shots from the sidelines of sporting fields and shots from back of school halls ? Or would 300 be better ?

        • @mgtra:
have you made a decision… im still torn

        • @mgtra:
Actually action shots are not recommended with these lenses.
The 70-300mm is recommended for sports if you can afford it.

        • +1

          @harkoliar:

Yeah the slow focusing of the 55-300mm is a concern to me BUT it is big jump in price up to the 70-300

        • @bwilso06:

Sale ends today. Good luck in deciding!

        • @harkoliar:

yeah i actually read that last night.

not sure that i'm willing to jump up about $400 to the 70-300mm over this 55-200 considering i am just learning.
Might just get this deal until I understand it all better. Thanks for the help guys

        • @mgtra:

These are basically the options and pricing we have and not much time to decide

$177.6 for the 55-200 from Kogan (grey import)
$236 (plus approx $5 postage or free pickup) for the 55-300 from The Good Guys
$521.6 for the 70-300 from Kogan (grey import)

Like you I am ruling out the 70-300 due to the big step up in cost from the other 2.

I need to try and decide if i want to sacrifice the reach of the 300mm lens due to the "reported" slow auto-focusing and go with the 200mm but am just a bit concerned the reach may not be long enough.

Does anyone know of the auto-focusing of the 55-200 is significantly better than the 55-300 at the 200 mark?

        • @bwilso06:
There really isn't a huge difference in maximum magnification between the two cheaper lenses.
Focal length and magnification are not the same thing, so don't let the 200 vs 300 fool you.
I would recommend you get the 55-200.
You can always crop your images if your composition isn't right. This will give you the same effect as the extra zoom, and you won't really lose any detail.

        • @Max Power:
effective focal length on a DX camera (D3300) would be 300mm vs 450mm, would this make it a bit more of a difference?

        • @bwilso06:
Did you play around with the lens simulator I linked to in a previous response?
That really will give you a good idea.

        • @Max Power:
I did but it only made the think will the 200mm reach be long enough

anyone purchased from these guys ?

    similar price after shipping
