Great monitor. Super 1080 picture from PS4. Just note: no HDCP 2.2 so you won't be watching 4K Netflix unless you buy a Chinese DRM remover box.

  • +1

Suuuuper tempting. Not sure if I should grab this or wait for the 43" IPS..

    • +4

we have one of these at work for CAD Drafting.. compared to our 32" LED IPS dell monitors its just as good with picture qty and viewing angles. the blacks are spot on and its 1,000,000 times better then the other VA panels we have here.. if someone didn't tell me it was a VA i would sware it was an IPS display.

Only bad thing with it is that its so big and doesn't tilt forward and the fact that as a 4k monitor if you want it to run well you need at least an i3 CPU and super fast graphics card, Display port is a most.

      • Thanks!

Also a bit iffy about the PWM dimming, as judging by the one I'm using right now, I'll probably set it in the region of 30% and I have no idea if I'd have issues with flickering as it seems all my LED backlight monitors were direct voltage dimming.

Of course, there's no gurantee that they'll switch away from PWM with the new IPS, and it's such a very good price.

      • *must one be corrected

  • +7

Great price. If anyone's considering getting one for work here's my take on it - I have one at work (rather, had one - mine stopped working and is currently in for repairs) for software development. Plenty of screen space and for me it's easy enough to see text without scaling. My older college uses one too (he's pushing 50) no probs.

It's semi reflective so it's probably not the best if there's a lot of light around and the corners of the screen are dull and difficult to see so to get around that I reduce the resolution so it's slightly letterboxed (which my graphics card lets me do). Also, it's a BGR panel so you need to adjust your cleartype setting in Windows and if you're mixing it with an rgb panel it will probably be worth mounting it upside down to make it rgb as Windows doesn't adjust properly when you move them from one screen to the next. The screen stand that comes with it isn't adjustable but it has a 200mm vesa mount.

    • +3

Also, in case you're wondering about screen real estate - 10 pages of a word document can fit on this simultaneously no problem.

  • +5

This is nuts! I'm tempted to buy it but, my desk might not have enough space, AND I'd be a little embarrassed at my office!

    • +1

Stop looking up you-know-what in the office then.

  • +4

Great deal. I paid about $1k a few months ago.

It is a big monitor though and the corners tend to fade a little if you're too close.

Also it occasionally has some issues coming out of sleep mode when I plug in my DisplayPort monitor.

It only supports 3480x2160 60Hz (note this technically not 4k, only UHD) via DisplayPort. HDMI 2.0 is not supported.

Can't say I've really noticed the BGR issue with ClearType but I usually have that turned off.

    • +1

It's only a problem with cleartype turned on so if you have it off then you're fine. If you have it on and not configured correctly your eyes will go crazy at the fuzzy text. Drove me crazy the first day as I didn't know anything about cleartype. Learned pretty quick though! :)

    • +1

With the sleep mode issues, have you tried changing your DisplayPort cable to a decent one, say something like this:
      http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Gold-Plated-DisplayPort/…

I have a Dell U3014 and had LOTS of problems that all ended up being a bad displayport cable I bought on EBAY…
The monitor wouldn't even turn on if the PC was on already with the dodgy cable. I couldn't believe it when I discovered a bad cable could cause so many issues.

I am tempted to get this as an upgrade to the U3014 - I have been hanging out for a Gsync monitor, but the 34" GSyncs are all $1300+

      • Thanks for the tip. It is a fairly budget cable. It happens maybe 1 in 10 so it's not a huge deal but is annoying when I "dock" my laptop. I have a couple of other cables but not sure if any have mini DisplayPort that I need at the laptop end.

      • Agreed. I have the same monitor and had all sorts of issues until I changed the DP cable.

      • So I used the mini DP to DP cable that came with the monitor rather than the mini to mini DP one I'd purchased separately.

Coming out of sleep issues when plugging in have not occurred since the cable change so that advice seems to have paid off. Thanks.

    • I had sleep mode issues with this monitor initially and turned out my NVidia card required a firmware update. Problem has never returned since.

      I use this monitor for PC + ps3 + ps4 and it's flawless.

  • I must be getting old if I don't know the specific difference between a 4k monitor and a 4k tv. Can someone enlighten me please?
Is it more than resolution and refresh rate, is there a difference? and obviously one has a tv tuner and the other doesn't.

    • Without making it too complicated, a 4K monitor will be fine with small text, most (not all) 4K tvs will struggle with text at such close range as well….

Hence the premium for a monitor. I could get all techy but take my word for it :)

    • A monitor will do 4:4:4 colour space whereas a TV will probably only do 4:2:0. Makes a big difference on a computer.

  • Tempting!!

    • +3

My finger has been on and off the buy button all morning :|

      • +3

Just pulled the trigger on one! Just be aware that the monitor is being shipped from overseas… so not sure how the warranty will work.

        • Congrats, I'm sure you will love it :)

Edit: Pretty sure it's from NZ.

        • The possible lack of a local warranty is what's got me concerned. Does anyone know if Philips will honour the warranty in Australia? Would cost an absolute fortune to send this thing overseas for warranty work…

        • @Jase2801: Yep, just got a paypal confirmation email re: payment to pbtech in NZ.

        • @FarQ: Some good comments from an earlier post HERE towards the bottom of the page.

        • ohh i dont like that one bit :(

        • Hi, i assume if you have issues you will have to manage a delivery back to this seller and they can sort on your behalf.
I will give them a call and see how their warranty works.

          Regards

        • @vinni9284:
For those who paid via PayPal, keep in mind that PayPal will cover the cost of shipping refunded items back, up to 8 times a year, to a maximum value of $45per transaction.(See Paypal's website for more information https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/returns

As to whether this would/could be used in regards to warranty returns, perhaps not (unsure).

Bought one from Umart in Sydney a few months ago, went from Ultrawide 34" to this and very impressed. If you have the desk space go for it.

    • +2

Wouldnt happen to be able to post a side by side would you or at least share your thoughts on 34" vs 40"?

Currently using a dell U3415 tempted to make the switch at this price.

  • Would this be ok with a 2015 Macbook retina?

Seem pretty awesome if it is?

    • I plugged in my 2014 Macbook Pro and it works, although 30HZ only (not smooth).

    • depends on the GPU.. what cpu is in it?

This is a friggin ridiculous price.

  • Return to base warranty in NZ.
I notice there's no ABN listed.
Does purchasing from this store come with an Australia tax invoice?

    • +6

For returns, it's free shipping back to base via Parcel Point:

Please visit https://freeshipping…ech.com.au/index.php?p=returns to submit a return request.
Fill out your information and the order information including Part Code: GAMFITXXXX. Invoice Number: SIHDXXXXXX. You should receive a response within 24 hours from when you submit the request and be supplied with an RCHD number.

Once you have received your RCHD number, please go to the following website, http://parcelpoint.com.au/freeshippingtech to return the faulty product. Here you will be able to fill in the required information, including Order ID SIHDXXXXXX. Under additional information please provide us with your RCHD number and leave as much detail about the issue as possible.

Be sure to let us know whether you would prefer a refund or replacement item.
You should then be given a return label to attach to the parcel and take the item to the specified location.
Once we receive the item, we should then be able to offer you a refund or a replacement item.

    • Well, with some research, they haven't got the best reviews.

      http://www.productreview.com.au/p/free-shipping-tech.html

I think I may go to the PC Shop locally and buy it for under $1K .. spend $200 more but then 200 less headaches if something goes wrong.

Not really confident with these fully online companies although many are popping up.

      Cheers

  • I'm assuming that there is no Tax Invoice and no GST included since it's a NZ company. For those that can claim back the GST, I don't think it's a great deal - I can walk into Umart any day and pick up this monitor for $999 and have it straight away and then claim back $100 GST - makes this monitor only about $100 cheaper and if there is no local warranty, it's not so great in my opinion.

Still a pretty good deal for those that can't claim back the GST and aren't as concerned about warranty issues.

I purchased it along with my new rig build mid last year when they were $900~

Does anyone know what the dead/bright pixel policy is?

  • Could anyone recommend a decent PC to run this at full resolution?

We have an Lenovo M53 which will have no hope of running it, but are looking to upgrade anyway. Ideally don't want to spend more than $400-500. Desktop / Mini PC / NUC preferred and doesn't need to be new.

    • Well, anything that has Displayport output should be able to display 4k. Just depends on the GPU whether it will output 4k @30Hz or 60Hz.

      • +1

        I don't think that's true. My M53 has Displayport, but the maximum resolution is 2560x2048 @ 60Hz…

        • What CPU is it? Intel spec sheet should be able to tell you what resolution is the max. Can it take a low profile discrete GPU?

        • @ninja33:

You're right. Thats a shame. Best you can hope for is a 30" 2560x1600 monitor.

  • Has anyone in Perth got one? I would love to see one. Considering upgrading from my 3xIPS screens (Dell U2311H)

  • Nvidia cards won't ruin the EDID will they? I would hate to spend $800 and have Nvidia kill it.

I don't know the details, but I know they were destroying certain monitors through a bug by permanently overwriting the monitors EDID with bad info. Can't recall if it was driver related, specific GPUs (ie: laptops) or whatnot.

  • +1

Anyone know whether I can run my 2015 macbook pro through this?
    Or would performance be atrocious?

    • This model can support a single external display up to 5120x2160 at 60 Hz via Thunderbolt 2. Via HDMI video output, it can support 1080p up to 60 Hz, 3840x2160 at 30 Hz, and 4096x2160 at 24 Hz.

    • +1

I've been using with my MacBook Pro for a while now.
With Windows on bootcamp it works perfectly at 4K
OSX didn't support 4k for this monitor until El Capitan. It now works well on OSX too. I even have it plugged through my henge dock.

Note that you will need to purchase a display port to mini display port cable separately (~ $14-$20)

  • +1

I bought this a while ago. It's awesome.
I'd be wary of the warranty issues especially coming from NZ. E.g It's easy to get a unit with some dead pixels. That itself could be a headache trying to claim warranty.

  • +1

using one now, bought is used for $800 and wont turn back, glad to see the price drop and was tempted to side by side 2 of them, but my desk only has space for one of them, the awkward stand meant i have to use a plank of wood wide enough to ensure it sits elevated on my desk.

Everytime i turn my pc on I am amazed at how much screen i have to work with.. EVERYTIME !!!

  • +2

Bought for $999 from umart about six months. Six months later I'm still loving it. Like @starwarsfreak mentioned I'm still blown away when I go back to work and plug it in. Windows 10 and now OSX too work brilliantly with this monitor. The native keyboard shortcuts for docking to the four corners is perfect. The automatic scaling on Windows 10 for high dpi is top notch now. The powered USB hub on the monitor is perfect for plugging in my network cable (using USB to enthernet adapter),keyboard, mouse etc. Just connect to the dock and everything powers on.

This has worked without missing a heartbeat for 6+ months now.

  • Has anyone purchased from this deal and received the Monitor?

The site looks legit with PayPal and a number to call.
I was wondering how was your experience if so.
At this stage I am contemplating of whether to buy local bricks and mortar shop for more however a little worried on issues with pixel, delivery damage etc.

Just bought one… could not resists… seems my surface pro 4 will run one of these just fine @ 60 hz… now to explain to my colleagues why I am placing a 40" screen on my work desk

    • +1

I know the feeling.. I saw this at work and said to myself 'if its still available by 11pm and not sold out it will be a sign to purchase it'…

I will sort out the logistics of where to actually put it on my desk with no space left once I cross that pixel, er um, I mean bridge.

  • I've had one of these for nearly a year now and still love it, they are randomly overclockable to around 75Hz (mine does 70Hz).

There's fairly extensive threads on Whirlpool & OCAU for tips/tricks.

  • So can I ask the vendor, what's the pixel policy on this monitor for a warranty return? If I buy locally, Philips Australia has told me they offer a "pixel perfect" guarantee for the first 30 days in addition to the standard warranty terms.

    • +2

I believe this monitor is from NZ hence may void Philips AU Terms and Conditions for warranty (due to it being from OS)

I have emailed this seller and asked questions in relation to this and if there are any return shipping charges that may incur.
I will update my posting once "hopefully" they return my query.

      Cheers

          Good morning,

This is the question and (a very generic) response IMO I have received from freeshippingtech when specific questions were asked in relation to warranty via email. I might be a little pessimistic with this comment though …." Once we receive the item our returns team """should""" be able to provide a replacement or refund.

I guess you be the judge if it is worth the $200 savings.

          —— Question ——-

          Hello Cameron,

          https://freeshippingtech.com.au/index.php?name=Philips-BDM40…

I have been given your email from the Online Chat support in relation the a warranty question.

I believe this Monitor will be shipped from NZ hence void the Warranty from Philips AU.

Therefore I would like to ask you, what are the Warranty claim procedures for:

          Dead Pixels and or DOA.
Faults through its 3 Year Warranty period.
          How do you claim.
Are there additional charges that I (the purchaser) has to incur to ship back to you.
Any other important factors that I may not be aware and you should address.

          Thank you for your time.

          Regards

          ——- Response ———

          Hi,

If a fault was to occur in the warranty period you can contact us for the instructions on how to return.

You would have to submit a return request on our website at https://freeshippingtech.com.au/index.php?p=returns

After submitting the request you can return your item at http://parcelpoint.com.au/freeshippingtech

If you are unable to drop it off at a ParcelPoint location you will have to send it.

Once we receive the item our returns team should be able to provide a replacement or refund.

          Kind Regards,

          Cameron

        • @vinni9284: The parcel point return method won't apply for this monitor. It is over the weight limit of parcel point (as per the link provided)

        • Thank you.

Yes I have mentioned this on a previous post.

My intention of this query was to gauge how the seller responds; for example as if they are specific about this item (although I did want specific details as requested)

However going by their response, it seems like a Generic statement "Copy and Paste" from their site.

          Regards

  • Has anyone used this for a full time 4K gaming with this monitor anyone?

There are some good reviews on You Tube however after calling a few popular Computer Shops in Melbourne that sells this monitor, they don't recommend this for gaming, even with the DP used.
The sellers' claim that due to 8ms G-G that images ghost at times however it is great for a viewing monitor for business, personal, movies etc.

Anyone that has this monitor and would like to elaborate, please do.

    Regards

    • +1

I went from 27" 120Hz Sammy TN screens, and while I do notice the slower response it's not a deal breaker.

My main problem is running dual 780ti's I often hit the 3GB VRAM limit, I briefly thought about 6GB 980ti's but they're only around 20% faster and 120% more expensive, so have decided to wait for the Pascal GPU's.

Check Whirlpool, OCAU, and AVSforum for more extensive user reviews.

      • Thanks for your feedback.

Ultimately, would you recommend for gaming assuming the PC Hardware supports a higher FPS e.g. Pascal GPU?
How does this compare to your 27" Sammy 120Hz monitor?

        Regards

  • Has anyone's monitor shipped yet.

    • Mine has a status of "Picking"

  • So tempted!! would love to see 4k gaming on a 40" for 775 bucks! Since it is 60hz my 980 ti should do ok.
    Has anyone received shipping confirmation?

    • Just checked and drum roll … Still status of Picking just like FarQ's

If It doesn't change by midday Friday I'm going to be very tempted to cancel as if a product is in stock it should have ideally shipped within 48 hours..

      • Same here. I have sent them a msg if it doesn't ship by tomorrow, I am going to cancel. Waiting 5 days for an In Stock item to ship is unacceptable.

EDIT: got an email back with an AustPost tracking number. Looks like it shipped yesterday.

        • Checked just a moment ago, Order Status: Picking

The tracking number provided under the order doesn't work for either australia or nz post service…

          I'll check tomorrow

        • @digitalaxon:

You need to click "view order", then send a msg. They should email you back with a tracking number or updated status.

        • What's your latest status update on the AusPost tracking site? Mine has been at "shipping information approved" since Tuesday.

        • @mthomas87:

To be more precise we are complaining about order being updated in a timely manner —- I'm well aware to expect something shipped from overseas to take a few days. Our issue is that the goods are shipped/processed and yet the online customer portal 2-3 days later still says 'picking' and the tracking number that is provided is not the actual one..

Mine is on board for delivery today. Went straight from shipping information approved to that.

  • Looking at the status on their website i.e. picking and some tracking number that does not work and then sending a different Auspost tracking number which just tells that Shipping information approved i.e. has not been shipped. All this is telling me that they don't have any stock and probably trying to get a large order to get a better price. Also trying to get more orders by dropping their price by a few dollars everyday.

    • Maybe…my order from Kogan (Hong Kong) took 5 days to go from "started" to "in transit" (See below). I guess we will see.

    • After unpacking and running I have to say I'm impressed, and after going back to my other 24" it was like 'Jeapers, this screen is so small'

As you've mentioned in other posts there is an issue of colour ghosting, but I found (in my limited evening testing) that this does not occur in regular use. Games like Grid or F1 Race Stars at 40" (even at 1080) look pretty smick.

No dead pixels (phew) but three subpixels are slightly dimmer making it look like a dead pixel due to some contaminant in the glass.

Native 4K footage looks very nice.

I did also notice a piece of paper in the box that was about australian consumer rights so I'm wondering if this means its AU stock? - Should read it properly when I get home but I was more interested in getting the monitor to work than reading pieces of paper.

Very pleased and I bought another one to replace and get rid of another 2 monitors and reclaim some desk space.

Overall good value for money, good picture, not perfect but considering size and cost and features, its hard to beat I reckon.

  • +1

I ordered 11th, attempted delivery on 18th. Fantastic monitor, came with all the cables. Change the DisplayPort from v1.1 to v1.2 on the monitor or Windows won't offer 60Hz at 4K

    • Thanks - most reviews I have read do seem really positive with the exception that some people say that there is evidence of colour banding, which I think can be seen where say a window is open and the colours of the top horizontal bar of the window kind of ghost across out of the top window bar into the surrounding area to the left or right in lines or bands. Have you seen anything like that on yours?

Also did your invoice have GST or was this not applicable as it is from NZ?

      • No GST as it is from NZ. Loving the monitor although have to sit a bit further back… haha
