The problem is when you get to the other end and have to use them to buy things in $USD.
That's why the fares are cheap - nobody's going there.
They're cheap because there's many carriers going this route so there is competition, there's many carriers because it's a common route. The dollar being at or near parity was an exception, people were travelling to the US when our dollar was under 50c.

Having OzBargain blood in me, I always seek cheap eats everywhere I am planning to visit. My other half would look accommodation bargains whilst I spent hours and sometimes weeks researching local cheap eats. What I have found in my past travel experience is that visiting a “place” would have more merit if I know a bit of history about it. For me, it has actually enhanced every trip we’ve been to.
San Francisco? One of my favourite places to visit! I’ll give you a head start – The California gold rush during 1848-1855 which started off in California resulted in a massive migration of fortune seekers from Latin America, Europe, Asia and even Australia. Increasing numbers of settlers along the coast line from San Diego up to San Francisco contributed greatly to the region. Today, San Francisco is one of the most multi-cultural cities in the United States of America.
Well. What is it has to do with food? - You asked. When people travelled far away from home, they often bring their culture with them and food is an important aspect of cultural identity. Although, I’m not local to San Francisco, I would imagine that for those who their ancestors ventured to California a several hundred years ago would now call San Francisco “Home”, culinary authenticity and techniques would have been handed down to them for generations perfecting their recipes with the use of local ingredients. Upon this revelation and discovery, it had made my visit to San Francisco a much more exciting one.
From a log in my journal, the below are my favourite Down-to-Earth / Cheap-Eats in San Fran;
• The Whole Beast (1028 Market St) – Got to try the Lamp Gyros, it a Greek style souvlaki
• Balompie Café (3349 18th Street) – Mexican Cuisine: you must try ”Queso y Frijoles Pupusa”
• Devil’s Teeth Baking Company (3876 Noriega Street) – They are famous for “the Special Breakfast Sandwich”
• Mission Banh Mi at Duc Loi Supermarket (2200 Mission Street) – This is a Vietnamese Cuisine, I had Fried-Chicken Banh Mi, one of the best Banh Mi yet!
• Kasa Indian Eatery (I forgot the address, sorry) – I had Kasa Indian Eatery, very nice.
• Hot Sauce and Panko (1545 Clement Street) – Try Wings and a Waffle Special
• Golden Boy Pizza (542 Green Street) – Late night fatty food, this is it! Recommend “Combination Slice”.
• Mario’s Bohemian Cigar Store (566 Columbus Ave) – I had the Breaded Eggplant Sandwich, man..it was so good.
• Chomp N’ Swig (1541 Clement Street) – You must try “Bacon Butter Crunch”, you can’t get it anywhere else!
• Pakwan (501 O'Farrell St) – This is Pakistani Cuisine, very unique, must try “Saag Paneer and Garlic Naan”
• Rosamunde Sausage Grill (2832 Mission St) – Never tasted a hot dog like the “Duck Sausage Hot Dog” with a cold beer…mmmmm yum!
• 4505 Burgers & BBQ (705 Divisadero Street) – I recommend “The glass fed Cheese Burger”, they are famous for this.
• Taqueria Cancún (2288 Mission Street) – I tell you what they make a really good Al Pastor Super Burrito ever!
• Arguello Super Market (782 Arguello Boulevard) – Try “the Roast Turkey Sandwich on Dutch Crunch”, that Dutch Crunch bread is something.
• La Palma Mexicatessen (2884 24th Street) – Mexican cuisine: Must try “Carnitas Taco with a Handmade Corn Tortilla”
• Shanghai Dumpling King (3319 Balboa Street) – you can’t go wrong with their Pan-Fried Pork Buns
The list should cover you a whole week stay! Enjoy you culinary experience in San Fran.

I stuck to Yelp, filtered with: within 5km, $ rating, sorted by ranking. Ended up loving Saigon Sandwich for breakfast, and La Taqueria for dinner.
Edit: Any other cities that stand out for cheap eats?
