  • how many discs does it hold?

    • It holds 100 discs (CD/DVD only)

How pointless. Holds 100 dvd (at 4.7gig/disc) so at most it can hold 470gig. Just buy an external hard-drive.

Of-course you could use DL DVDs, but even more not worth it at the price per disc.

    • these things are great for our office. We have all our software discs in one. Plus all our font discs, customer artwork etc. It is too much of a pain to convert all the discs to images to store on a hard drive.

    • What kind of -ve is this?!
It's pointless for you and me, but so many other things which've been posted here as bargains, it doesn't mean it's not a bargain.

    • Pointless as a storage medium, I agree. But if you have/need to use DVDs or CDs then it makes things much easier/tidier. And the next cheapest option that I can find is $599 + P&H.

    • This is not a mass storage device it is more a library, this is for people who would like to locate discs they already have.

I need one of these although my budget means mine will come from ebay

Responding to all of you. Convert the discs to ISO and whack them on a hard-drive, done. I voted it down because not only is it pointless, there are much cheaper options out there (not using optical media), thus not a bargain.

      • Not all discs can be easily converted to ISO, and not all people know how to or can be bothered doing so.

        • -4

….don't know how to make a ISO? I hope not.

          • @PainToad: There are people out there who arnt tech savy

          • +1

@PainToad: Except myself I doubt there's a single person in my family who would know how to make an iso. They live quite happy lives but have many DVDs, and this would be the cheapest and easiest option for them.

And before you suggest that I convert their discs to ISO for them, the time it would take me to convert their DVDs to ISO is a lot more costly than an external HDD or this bargain.

            • -4

@Naed: I doubt the time to set this up and load all the discs details into its software would be much less than quickly making ISOs of them and whacking them on a drive.

              • @PainToad: I would like to see how long it would take you to convert 100 discs to ISO using a normal DVD drive?

If I am not mistaken this model can also access your discs directly "and not just store them". I would have bought it myself though I don't think I will get financial approval.

The kids have quite a bit of Wiggles DVD's that I would like to convert. This would be the perfect device to just olet it run.

    • i disagree with Pain toad

  • Is this better than the Imation Stakka?

    • Its just a stakka with a dvdrom attached to it.
Stakka's are very prone to have problems resulting from the belt driven mechanics & also the spring based entry spool.
Have 2 stakkas, hate them with a passion. Avoid

  • stakka is $99 and it's crap too

    • why i was planning on getting one ?

  • stakka's fail all the time, thus having to undo the box and manually get the disc out.

  • also the stakker s/w isn't too great and needs dot.net 1.1

  • They are useful for a niche market .. lawyers with their gazillion DVDs library, schools, and the unsold stock will be dumped on Catch of The day or similar site
